The Worshipful Society of Apothecaries lies at the heart of the early foundations of
modern-day medicine and remains an important, active and innovative medical
institution today. The Society plays a key role in the advancement of specialist areas
of medicine, and in the ongoing post-graduate education and qualification of
practitioners.
Steeped in history and tradition, the Society was founded by oyal !harter in "#"$
and is one of the few livery companies in the !ity of %ondon to remain professionally
based with over &' per cent of its membership belonging to professions allied to
medicine.
The Society(s )all in *lackfriars, formerly the guesthouse of the +ominican ,riory of
the *lack -riars, was acquired in "#./. +estroyed in the 0reat -ire of %ondon, it was
re-built by "#$/ on the same site, where it still stands.
-rom "#$/ until "1//, the Society of Apothecaries manufactured and sold medicinal
and pharmaceutical products at the )all, and in "#$. it founded the !helsea ,hysic
0arden, only relinquishing managerial control in "&11.
2n "$34 the Society won a key legal suit 5known as the ose !ase6 against the oyal
!ollege of ,hysicians in the )ouse of %ords, which ruled that apothecaries could both
prescribe and dispense medicines. This led directly to the evolution of the apothecary
into today(s general practitioner of medicine.

*urnt down in the 0reat -ire and bombed
out in the *lit7, today8s church of St Andrew
is a complete reconstruction nestling within
Wren8s walls. The details9including the "$th
century emblems on the ceiling9have been
reproduced with particular care, so that it is
difficult to tell that the church was out of use
until "1#".
The history of St Andrew8s dates back to the thirteenth century when it was
associated with *aynard8s !astle, a royal residence that has long since disappeared.
When :ing ;dward 222 moved his state robes and other effects from the Tower of
%ondon to a large building close by, St Andrew8s became better known for its
connection with the 0reat Wardrobe. The name stayed to specify its location although
the :ing8s store room is now only remembered in Wardrobe ,lace.
