Axel Schefer
He is the best-selling, award-winning
illustrator of many of the worlds favourite
picture books. Born in Hamburg Germany,
Axel moved to England over 30 years
ago to study illustration. Alex is perhaps
best-known for his collaborations with Julia
Donaldson, including the modern classic
The Gruffalo, which has sold over ve
million copies worldwide.

Label the parts of the Gruffalo by cutting interesting
words from the newspaper or making up new words by
combining newspaper letters eg: shurkle or yambicles.

She was born in the USA but lived in New

coming to Australia, where she worked

wrote more than 85 books, including fun
activity and recipe books, and many in
reader series such as Jellybean Readers,
Celebrate Reading, Voyager and Literacy
Links. She also wrote the Deadly and
Dangerous Australian nature series for
children. Her characters in Wombat Stew
(1985) have been used in children's

mystery series of 26 volumes. Many of the
reviews have commented on the suitability
of her works to be read aloud and she has
explained this in interviews by stating that
she reads a story onto an old fashioned
cassette tape. Although living in the USA
||:e ||e ea||] 1990, Vau|a| :c||||ued
to write Australian stories.
Wombat Stew

catches a wombat and wants to cook him in a
stew. But all the other bush animals have a plan
to save their friend. They trick the dingo into
using mud, feathers, ies, bugs and gum nuts in
his wombat stew, and the result is - a stew the
dingo will never forget!
Hidden in the grid below, are the ways that some Australian
animals move. Find the words and match them to the animal
they belong to.
