The subversive singer's famous flared suit was
emblazoned with images of marijuana leaves,
naked women and a giant red cross and became a
sartorial icon for the hippie movement.

The ensemble was designed by cult country fashion
designer Nudie Cohn, who designed Elvis Presley's
gold lam suit. Born in the Ukraine Cohn also
created clothes for Elton John, Johnny Cash,
Liberace and Eric Clapton.

Nudie Cohn (1902/1984) was a Russian-born
Jewish-American tailor, known for designing
rhinestone-covered suits, known popularly as
"Nudie Suits", and other elaborate outfits for some
of the most famous celebrities of his era. He also
became famous for his outrageous customized
automobiles.

Many of Nudie Cohn's designs became signature
looks for their owners. Among his most famous
creations was Elvis Presley's $10,000 gold lam
suit, worn by the singer on the cover of his
50,000,000 Elvis Fans Can't Be Wrong album. He
designed the iconic costume worn by Robert
Redford in the 1979 film Electric Horseman, which
is now owned and exhibited by the National
Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma
City.

Thayaht (pseudonym of Ernesto
Michahelles), Project for a TuTa

Thayaht was the pseudonym of artist and designer
Ernesto Michahelles (1893/1959) best known for
his revolutionary design of the TuTa and his
involvement with the Italian Futurist movement.
A mixture of British, German, Swiss and American
origins, Thayaht was born in Florence, Italy and
was related to American artist Hiram Powers. He
studied painting at the Acadmie Ranson in Paris,
as well as scientific dyes and dynamic structure at
Harvard University. He adopted the pseudonym .
THAYAHT. around 1919, a bifrontal palindrome
(visually symmetrical, it can be read from right to
left, left to right, and in a mirror).

With help from his artist brother RAM (Ruggero
Alfredo Michahelles) he launches the new design in
1920, and the pattern is published by the
newspaper La Nazione so that the TuTa is
accessible to all. Intended as a practical item of
clothing for the everyday, it was instead adopted
as a fad by high Florentine society.

In 1919, Thayaht started designing his most famous
piece. The TuTa, which Thayaht called the most
innovative, futuristic garment ever produces in the
history of Italian fashion was an early example of
what we now know as coveralls, intended
revolutionize fashion on create a modern and
particularly Italian style.
