NICK COHEN/The Sun
The students of Olson Middle School took it outside on Monday, June 16 to celebrate field day. A cloudless sky and sun-soaked fields
created the perfect atmosphere for a day filled with water balloon tosses, games of kickball, relay races and a lot of laughs. The day of
fun and celebration was a perfect cap to the school year with graduation set to take place Thursday, June 26.

Selected candidate to be sworn in July 21
also cannot be a disqualified
voter and must be a registered
voter.
Once the interested candidates
have submitted their letters of in-
tent, the board will then inter-
view candidates during a special
public meeting of the board on
Thursday, July 17 at 6:30 p.m.
Board president Michael Lee
said the interview process would
help the board select the best can-
didate from those who applied.
With the obvious candidates
putting in their letter of interest,
and its not that extensive, being
able to read and write, being a res-
ident for at least a year, registered
voterwe want an outstanding
candidate. In order to make that
happen, what Id like to do is Id
like it to be a full board interview
of our candidates.
The candidate selected to fill
the vacancy will be sworn in at
the boards next regularly sched-
uled meeting on Monday, July 21.
The candidate selected to fill
the vacancy will then serve the
remainder of Coolidges term
until January 1, 2015.
If the candidate selected is in-
terested in serving on the board
in any long-term capacity, he or
she would still be required to sub-
mit the proper paperwork to the
Burlington County Clerks office
by July 28 to appear on the ballot
in November to run against any
other interested parties.
Superintendent George Raffer-
ty said anyone selected to serve
on the board could expect to have
their board duties consist of
about six to 10 hours a month.
Sometimes they might aver-
age less than that, but sometimes
other matters come up where you
might put more time in, Rafferty
said.
The member would be expect-
ed to attend the boards monthly
public meeting, in addition to
serving on one of the boards edu-
cation, human resources, opera-
tions or policy committees and at-
tending a monthly meeting asso-
ciated with that committee.
The superintendent also gives
board members weekly updates,
in addition to a packet in advance
of each board meeting containing
information about the meeting.
Rafferty said board members
are also encouraged to attend
school functions and events to ap-
pear visible and connected to the
school and community.
For those interested, letters of
intent can be directed to district
business administrator and
board secretary Noreen Boston
through mail at 132 New Road,
Tabernacle, NJ 08088, through fax
at (609) 268-1006 or through email
to bostonn@tabschools.org.

The Sun
At the June 16 meeting of the
Tabernacle Board of Education,
District Anti-Bullying Coordina-
tor John Tirico gave a report on
the districts Harassment, Intimi-
dation and Bullying self-assess-
ment, along with a report on vio-
lence vandalism and substance
abuse.
All public schools in the state
now regularly complete self-as-
sessments to determine efforts to-
ward implementing the states
Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act.
Tabernacle Elementary School
and Olson Middle School were
scored in categories such as HIB
programs, approaches and initia-
tives, policy training, staff in-
struction, curriculum instruction
on HIB, HIB personal, incident re-
porting, investigative procedure
and more.
Very proudly, our teachers,
our staffs, our administration,
everyone has done an amazing
job with this, Tiricio said.
Out of a possible total score of
75, TES scored a 68 and OMS
scored a 71.
Its pretty amazing, Tiricio
said. If you took that 75 and you
put it on a 100-point scale, youre
looking at a 94 and a 90; 92 aver-
age. Youre looking at an A stu-
dent.
Tiricio also gave an overall re-
port on the number of incidents
of violence, vandalism and sub-
stance abuse through the first pe-
riod of the school year from Sept.
1, 2013 Dec. 31, 2013.
He said every time such an in-
dividual incident of a particular
nature occurs, the school must
create a report and submit it to
the state.
All of us should be very proud,
the community we live in, theres
a lot of zeroes, almost all zeroes
for both schools, Tirico said.
Youre looking at assault, fights,
robbery, vandalism, weapons,
substance abuse a lot of zeroes,
all zeroes basically.
In other news:
The board thanked and recog-
nized the work of several district
employees who will be retiring
with the completion of the school
year.
Those retirees are Gloria Back,
a school social worker, Christine
Gaskill, a special education assis-
tant, Mary Ellen McCloy, a
kindergarten teacher, and Lor-
raine Stewart, a school bus driver.
Superintendent George Raffer-
ty said the group represented a
unique example of the various
professions and different posi-
tions that work in the schools and
how they serve children and fami-
lies in the district.
You have here a cross section
of professionals that serve our
community and your children
every day, day after day, year after
year, and they do it with such care
and compassion and dedication to
the children that they serve, Raf-
ferty said.
The board recognized the aca-
demic and artistic achievement of
several students.
The team of seventh and
eighth graders Morgan Fenrick,
Matthew Kustrup, Chrysoulla
Powell, James Pronchick, Callin

Its time to rethink whom we
elect so back room deals stop
I would like to bring the residents of
Tabernacle up to date on the township
committees decision to dissolve the fire
district. The committee voted to dissolve
the fire district on April 28. The resolution
was not on the meeting agenda, it was
placed there 10 minutes after the meeting
started. The committee also did not pro-
vide written copies of the resolution. This
is how the committee views open and hon-
est government.
For months, the public has questioned
the mayor and committee as to the status of
the fire district. We were assured by Mayor
Barton that the process would be discussed
and the subcommittees findings would be
discussed. The report by the subcommittee
was not available at this meeting for the
public to see or the committee to discuss.
So we have a resolution that no one knows
the details of, based on a subcommittee re-
port that no one has seen, if it even exists,
being voted on by the committee that has
never publicly discussed the dissolution.
The secret of how the committee came
to the conclusion to dissolve the district
without ever having any public discussion
is a question that every one should be ask-
ing. The attitude that "we know what's best
for you" should be of great concern to all of
the citizens of Tabernacle. To the hun-
dreds of people who showed up in Decem-
ber to support the fire company and dis-
trict, your voices have been ignored. The
committee has not only voted to dissolve
the district, it has voted to take away the
last thing you get to vote on concerning
your tax dollars.
You no longer vote on any government
budgets, no more school budgets, and now
they will decide when and how much will
be spent on fire equipment without any
public input.
Is this the first step to a paid fire depart-
ment, a full-time public safety director?
We already have an emergency squad
that bills you and your insurance company
for your ride to the hospital, yet still re-
ceives its vehicles, gas, insurance and
building plus $70,000 from our tax dollars.
Maybe it's time to rethink whom we
elect to the committee, maybe we need to
show up at township meetings and let them
know the back room deals are not going to
continue. Maybe we need to let them know
we know what is best for us and remind
them they were elected to represent us not
impose their agendas on us.

e realize that you may have
other, more pressing con-
cerns on your mind. After
all, summer has officially started, the
kids are out of school, its hot, its
rainy, then its hot again.
Youd rather be by a pool or at the
beach, avoiding the South Jersey bear
or the Jersey Shore shark, planning
your Fourth of July celebrations, your
family vacation, or pondering the silli-
ness of the government making salt
water taffy the states official candy.
And yes, we realize that late June is
not typically the time for reflection.
That is usually reserved for the wan-
ing days of December and the begin-
ning of a new year.
But for us at Elauwit Media, weve
spent the last few months looking
back, and well be spending a chunk of
our summer doing the same.
Thats because, come August, well
be turning 10 years old. Our first
newspaper, The Haddonfield Sun, de-
buted in August 2004. Since then,
weve expanded quite a bit.
Along the way, we have some great
memories. Weve made great contacts,
some great friends and have done our
best to serve the residents of every
town we cover.
Now, its time to reflect on those 10
years. This summer, well be celebrat-
ing the last decade, and we want your
input.
What has the last 10 years meant to
you? What does your life look like
today compared to what it looked like
in 2004? What does any stretch of 10
years mean in a larger sense?
Over the summer, well be compil-
ing stories, photos and more that help
us paint a picture of what 2004-2014
has meant, both to us specifically and
to the town and its residents.
If youd like to be a part of this ef-
fort, if youd like to contribute your
thoughts, your insights, your stories
and your photos, please send an email
to tronaldson@elauwitmedia.com.
Were involving our readers in our
10-year celebration because you are
the reason we started our first Sun
newspaper, you are the reason we
started more, and you are the reason
we continue to publish every week.
The last 10 years have been great for
us, and we hope they have been equal-
ly as great for you.
Help us reflect on these past 10 years
as we prepare for the next 10, and
hopefully even more.

We want to hear your stories and see your

Board honors four Burlington
County College students
Four of Burlington County Col-
leges Phi Theta Kappa students
were honored for their outstand-
ing academic accomplishments,
leadership and community serv-
ice at the BCC Board of Trustees
meeting on Tuesday, June 17.
BCC students Kyra Jenkins, of
Burlington, Nathan Wilson, of
Shamong, Rachel Malette, of
Mount Holly, and Bryanna Wol-
stenholme, of Eastampton, were
joined by BCCs PTK Chapter
(Chi Iota) faculty advisor William
Whitfield for the recognition
event at the meeting.
We celebrate academic
achievement, especially when it
is linked with community service
and leadership skills that predi-
cate future success, BCC Interim
President Dr. David I. Spang said.
These four students are excel-
lent examples of the rich academ-
ic tradition at Burlington County
College.
Jenkins and Wilson were both
presented with USA TODAYs
2014 All-USA Community College
Academic Team nomination cer-
tificates. The program recognizes
high-achieving community col-
lege students who demonstrate
academic excellence and intellec-
tual rigor in addition to leader-
ship and service that extends
their education beyond the class-
room to benefit society. Each col-
lege can nominate two students
for the merit-based program,
which is supported by Follett
Higher Education Group, the
American Association of Com-
munity Colleges and PTK, the in-
ternational honor society for
community colleges.
The entire Board of Trustees
is proud of the hard-working,
dedicated and civic-minded stu-
dents at Burlington County Col-
lege, Board Chair George Nyiki-
ta said. We congratulate them,
applaud their effort and look for-
ward to the many wonderful ac-
complishments they will
achieve.
Malette and Wolstenholme
were congratulated by the board
for being among New Jerseys 37
best and brightest community
college students to be named to
the All-State Academic Team,
sponsored by PTK and the New
Jersey Council of County Col-
leges. The honor is reserved for
community college students who
display outstanding academic
achievements and exceptional
service to their communities

attention and focus and patience
and an ability to put your efforts
into something over time, and
you all have shown that, Rafferty
said.
The board agreed to make
agendas for school board meet-
ings available for the public on
