Central refrigeration plant for air
conditioning, shall be of the chilled
water type, supplying the various air
handling and fan coil units on a 16-
hour/per day basis all year-round.

The chilled water circuit configuration
shall be with variable volume speed

Chilled water flows are to vary based
upon a differential water pressure sensor,

chiller (nominally 20%).
The volume of the chilled water loop
shall be considered in the selection of the
chiller. If the chilled water loop volume
is required to be increased, allow for the
necessary insulated buffer tank and
associated pipework, valves etc.

during commissioning and fixed at the
optimum level for chiller operating

rules for developing countries in place at

Operation: Refrigerant liquid evaporates
within the tubes.
Refrigerant system: Arrange refrigerant
circuits to prevent oil logging at the
lowest operating refrigerant velocity.
Water baffles: Provide polypropylene or
mild steel water baffles securely fixed to
the tube bundle or welded to the shell,
and incorporate pass partitions
complementary to the water baffles so
that the cooling effect is distributed
equally between all operating tubes.

volume closest to the refrigerant outlet.

outside edge of the tube sheet. If
necessary, provide intermediate tube
supports along the length of the shell, to
prevent sagging of the tubes. Prevent
tube from vibrating against supports.
Tube plate material: Type 316 stainless
steel to ASTM A240/A240M.
Fixing: Fix rigidly to support structures
with either
- mounting feet incorporated in
cradles welded to the shell; or
- fixing straps, if recessed into cradles
formed in factory-made mounting
feet.

Multiple Chiller Control
Where multiple chillers operate as a
system, provide a chiller system manager
to operate the chillers as a single central
cooling plant.
The chiller system manager shall be
provided and commissioned by the
chiller manufacturer.
Operation of the chillers shall be such
that energy costs are minimised.
The chiller system manager shall
interface with the building management
system using a serial interface, which
shall be used to initiate the chiller system
on request and to allow remote
monitoring as below.
Operating control and monitoring of
auxiliary equipment such as chilled
water pumps, condenser water pumps,
purge units may be via the chiller system
manager or directly by the building
management system.

Centrifugal and screw chillers
Operation: Provide for chillers to start
unloaded and for subsequent loading and
unloading to be by the control system.
Control system: Provide a control system
which senses the leaving chilled water
temperature and maintains it at the
desired setting by modulation of the
compressor slide valve, unloading ports
or variable speed drive, as appropriate.
Current limiter: Provide control to limit
the maximum current drawn by the
compressor motor by monitoring the 3
phases of supply power.
Demand limiter: Provide control to
permit continuous manual control of
power demand at operating points from
20 - 100% of full load power.

bored main bearings of the insert journal
type and separate thrust bearings to
axially position the impeller and absorb
any unbalanced thrust.
Pre-rotation vanes: Provide stepless
capacity control, which maintains stable
operating conditions and responds to
variations in load from leaving chilled
water setpoint temperature.
Drive type: Select from the following:
- Direct drive.
- High speed helical gear train.
Open drive compressor shaft seals:
Provide oil lubricated mechanical shaft
seals which are efficient under both
vacuum and pressure conditions.
Lubrication: Provide oil separator, pump,
filter, oil cooler, thermostatically
controlled oil heater and pressurised
lubrication during run-up and coast-
down including coast-down after a
power failure.
Oil heaters: To operate during off cycles
of the compressor.

Centrifugal chiller pressure systems
Emission abatement: For chillers which,
at any time, are below atmospheric
pressure, provide a means of
- preventing air infiltration and
refrigerant loss;
- preventing the subsequent need for
purging to the atmosphere; and
- pressurising the chiller for leak-
testing purposes.
- Deemed-to-satisfy: Refrigerant
emission abatement systems,
permanently attached to chillers, and
which automatically maintain
positive pressure within the chiller
vessel during non-operational
periods, by referencing atmospheric
pressure.
Components: Provide the following:
- Aluminium-plated, silicon heat
blankets or hot water heater.
- Solid state safety circuit/automation
interface.
- Refrigerant pressure controller.
- Leak test mode set points.
- For blanket type systems:

capable of ensuring that the heat
supply cannot exceed a
predetermined high limit
temperature by sensing heat
blanket temperature.
