Steel is the backbone material of the society closely embracing our everyday life.
Thus, ferrous technology must be advanced continually to create the steel that
nurtures an affluent, eco-friendly society and to continue the sustainable
development of modern society. The Graduate Institute of Ferrous Technology was
founded in 2005 as the worlds only fully accredited institute of higher learning
offering graduate education in the field of Steel Science and Technology.
GIFT has a mission to act as a rich source of highly trained young scientists and
technologists, not only to feed the ever growing demands of the steel and steel-
related industries, but also to nurture creativity in this most fascinating materials.
GIFT has an international perspective, with both staff and students welcomed
anywhere in the world, and with no boundaries of research collaborations. The
working language of all staff and students is English.
The Institute is not only located in one of the best university environments in the
world, but also benefits from its close proximity to some of the major steel
producers in Korea, including POSCO, who has generously funded GIFT in
perpetuity.
GIFT will continue to devote its utmost efforts to accomplishing its mission: To
nurture the best manpower in steel technology as the Steel Academy of
Excellence, and to be the custodian of world steel research.

Application Instructions
Eligibility
MS applicants must have completed a bachelors degree before beginning
graduate study. Students in their final year of undergraduate study may be
admitted on the condition that their bachelors degrees are awarded before they
enroll at POSTECH.
Ph.D. applicants must have earned a masters degree before enrollment at
POSTECH.
Programs and Degrees Offered
GIFT offers MS and Ph.D. programs.

charge an application fee.

(1) Application Form
Applicants must fill out an online application.

(4) Official Transcript(s)
- From all undergraduate and graduate institutions you attended
- Transcript(s) is/are issued by the registrar of the institution attended, bearing
the original raised or colored seal of the institution and the signature of your
institution's registrar or academic official.
(5) Degree Certificate(s)
- For all undergraduate and graduate degrees you have received
- Applicants who expect to earn a degree can submit an enrollment certificate.
- Applicants who have graduated from a university in China must additionally
submit a Certificate issued at the China Academic Degrees & Graduate
Education Development Center.
(6) Recommendation Letters
- From two recommenders.
- Must be emailed directly by each recommender or be enclosed in a sealed
envelope.
(7) English Proficiency Test (EPT)
- Every applicant whose native language is not English must demonstrate English
Proficiency.
- Applicants must meet one of the English Proficiency Test Minimum score
requirements: TOEFL PBT 550, TOEFL CBT 213, TOEFL iBT 79, IELTS 6.0, TOEIC 800,
TEPS 680 or higher.
- TOEFL Score Report can be accepted by ETS directly to POSTECH Graduate
Admissions and Student Affairs and POSTECH Institution code for ETS is 0329.
- TOEFL ITP can be accepted when POSTECH organizes it.
- Proof of Instruction Language*** can be substituted for the English Proficiency
Test.
- Applicants who have graduated from a university in Australia, Canada, Ireland,
New Zealand, Great Britain, and the United States are exempt from the English
Proficiency Test.

(11) List of Honors and awards**
- If you have received any honors, awards, or fellowships during your
undergraduate or graduate studies, or any academic certificates and test
reports, please list them in order of importance.
(12) Degree Theses
*** Applicants can download the forms from the POSTECH
website(http://admission.postech.ac.kr/mainUsen.do).
*** Applicants can submit the form(s) electronically.
*** Proof of Instruction Language means that applicants have taken courses provided in English.
Also, it must include the institutions seal.
Note
Applicants must submit the required documents by post to the Office of Graduate
Admissions and Student Affairs by the admission deadline. If applicants do not
submit them by the admissions deadline, applicants could be denied admission.
POSTECH reserves the right to revoke the admission or terminate a students
attendance, should it be discovered later that: a false statement has been made; a
false document has been provided; documentation has been altered or if there has
been an omission of significant information.
All documents must be original and issued by the institution that bears the actual
signature of the registrar in ink and its own seal. All official academic records must
be issued in the original language and accompanied by English translation
prepared by the issuing institution.

Costs and Financial Aid

(US$1.00 is approximately KRW 1,100 as of April 2014)
* This is established to reduce the financial burden on students in case of illness or injury.
Students enrolled in the plan can receive 80% of medical expenses in reimbursement up to
the maximum of KRW 1,000,000 per semester.

Opportunities for GIFT applicants
GIFT Summer / Winter Internship
Undergraduate students in 3rd and 4th year who are interested in GIFT are allowed
to apply for Internship Program to obtain practical experience in steel production
and processing.
