1.a) Define an air conditioning system and name its basic elements.
b) Explain cooling load calculation for comfort air conditioning.

2. An air conditioning system is to be designed for the restaurant with the following
data.
Outside design conditions : 40

Solar heat gain through walls, roof and floor : 5.87 kW.
Solar heat gain through glass : 5.52 kW.

Sensible heat gain from the other sources : 11.63 kW,

If 25% of fresh air and 75% recirculated air is mixed and passed through the
conditioner coil, find the total amount of air required. Also find,
(1) ADP
(2) The supply air condition and
(3) The capacity of the plant, assuming bypass factor as 0.2.

3.a) What different methods are used for designing the ducts? Explain the advantages of
each over other.
b) List out the characteristics of good air distribution system. Discuss the location of
supply and return grills in obtaining good air distribution.

4.a) Explain the heat transfer phenomenon through insulation used for air conditioning.
b) Describe the types of insulation materials.

5.a) Explain the important properties of urethane foam insulation and its role played in
the air conditioning industry.
b) What are the main sources of noise in air conditioning systems? What are the
methods of noise control?

6.a) State the field of application at axial flow fan and centrifugal fan.
b) Discuss the different methods of fans controls.

7.a) What are the major difficulties experienced in air-conditioning a car?
b) Describe the different methods of air conditioning systems used on rail road cars.

8. Write short notes on.
a) Explain the difference between comfort air-conditioning and industrial air
conditioning
b) Dry air filter.
c) Measurement of temperature and humidity.
