for display on the San Diego Art
Institute website. The Artist
Prole can display up to 6 pieces of
art including titles and description
along with a bio and picture of
yourself if you wish. You will be
able to choose from 17 different
template styles for displaying your
artwork. The prole pages have
been streamlined to make the
whole process of posting your
artwork much simpler.

The website has been updated
to randomly pull from the list of
artists to display a thumbnail
of your work and a link to your
personal artist prole page. This
feature is now live on many of the
pages throughout the website.

Dear Members,
Since 1996 the San Diego Art Institute, has been moving toward a goal of bet-
ter recognition for the both the organization and its programs. Our focus has
always been to strengthen the organization to allow for sustainable programs
and be able to bring recognition to living artists and their artwork.
To this end we have made signicant progress in the development of programs
like Artbox and Artbox II, the merging of COVA, the development of the Visual
Arts Gallery in partnership with KPBS, being a founding member of the Balboa
Park Cultural Partnership, expanding partnerships to advance the visual arts
with Illumina, Art and Athletics/Front Runners, Poetry and Art, Fusion Mem-
bership with the Japanese Friendship Garden, the development and exhibition
of new works such as Ginger Wallaces mixture of her art and wit, the develop-
ment of a permanent collection, acquisition of the San Diego Art Department
and the establishment of North Park for the Arts.
We have known that expanding our reach would need to be through multiple-
site development, hence the name for the gallery, Museum of the Living Artist,
and purchase of the San Diego Art Department in North Park. Strategically
speaking SDAI has also been waiting for the right time to expand the Art De-
partment and the established programs of the school. The right opportunity has
come our way and we are in the midst of nishing an RFP put out by the San
Diego Redevelopment Agency to acquire a building in North Park to be home
to an expanded Art Department, with additional classes, artist studios, a larger
professional gallery and exhibition space, as well as retail and food vending.
This is a very exciting time for us, but it is also one full of unknowns. The pro-
cess is such that we develop a team for this proposal that will hopefully be the
right combination to lead to our being selected. As it stands now, our team is
myself, Andrea Chamberlin (Director of Education at SDAI and SDAD), Drew
Hubbell and Alex Miller of Hubbell & Hubbell Architects, David Malmuth, David
Malmuth Developers LLC, Sherman Harmer of Urban Housing Partners (as de-
veloper consultant), and Claire Slattery, Vice Chair, SDAI Board of Directors.
This is where the tire meets the road so to speak as we move toward the next
phase of growth for SDAI, and also make a difference for the arts and artists
of this region. If we are selected as the next owners of this building, we will be
organizing a capital campaign to pay for the build-out.
On a more day-to-day track:
We are completing the prospectus for the International Awards Exhibition
for Spring 2011, which will be juried by Roxana Velasquez, the new Executive
Director of the San Diego Museum of Art.
SDAI has been voted Best Gallery in the 2010 Best of City Beat Magazine.
Congrats to us all for this recognition.
We are going green with our Journal, which henceforth will be sent via e-mail
and posted on our website so that we may reduce our printing and mailing
costs. We will only mail a hard copy to those who do not have access to email
and the Internet and who particularly request, in writing, a printed copy of the
Journal. Thank you all for working to make this planet and SDAI green.
Be involved and make a difference today.

Leap Into The Arts
SDAI:MOLA & Cricket Wireless are teaming up to present the Leap into the Arts
youth exhibition. National City Middle School will be exhibiting their artwork entitled,
Picturesque. Students selected one image from a country that inspired them and
expanded the picture according to their imagination. The end-product for some was
realistic and for others it was more fantastical. The art project was not only a lesson in
creativity, but geography and culture as well. The exhibit will be on view at the Cricket
headquarters from October 15 to December 15, 2010: 5887 Copley Drive, San Diego,
CA 92111. Tel: 1-858-882-6000. Participating students include: Erwin Basurto, Moises
Bojorquez, Melina Burgos, Renato Garcia, Alyssa Godinez, Anna Navarro, Maria-Ana
Obseo, Alejandro Trillo, Dan Paulo Yap, and Daniel Zatarain.
Fleet Youth Gallery Exhibit
Zamorano Elementary School & National City Middle School will be showcasing their
artwork in the David G. Fleet Young Artists Gallery from 12/10/10-1/16/2011. The Opening
Reception will be held on 12/10/10 from 6-8. Certicates will be handed out at 7pm.

KA-POW!
Artist Statement
Street art, grafti and ne art intertwine and challenge us to see everything
differently and reconsider our ideas of art. From the most profound images of
our revered religious icons, to our real-life superheroes, to our fantasy comic
book characters, street art stirs our passions and our memories...and we wonder
where will ART go next.

In Tribute . . .

Jerome Lipetzky passed away peace-
fully, with his family by his side, on
September 7, 2010. Jerome was a SDAI
member since 2002, Alpine resident
and accomplished Plein-Air painter.
He grew up in Pasadena, served in the
Army after working on the Alaska Rail-
road and obtained a degree in History
from UCLA. After a 30-year teaching
career, he retired in 1991. Upon retire-
ment, his interest in painting started
with a beginning watercolor class in
1993. Jeromes passion for conser-
vation of the environment lives on in
his numerous works done on location
in Californias deserts and moun-
tains. Further inquiries regarding Je-
romes artwork should be directed to
Beth Lucia at the Julian Art Gallery,
(760) 765-1551.

Florence Maio passed away in Sep-
tember. A long-time SDAI member
since 1998, Florence had been actively
immersed in the San Diego artistic
community. Florence was a 2009 win-
ner at the San Diego County Fair,
Honorable Mention, for her watercolor
cityscape, Enchanted Village 2. In
July 2010 Florence participated in
The Buttery Project, memorializ-
ing the 1.5 million child victims of the
Holocaust. Students from the San Di-
ego Jewish Academy and residents of
Seacrest Village joined artistic forces
to create butteries to form the per-
manent art exhibit. Florences photo-
graphs from Naples, Italy, were also
exhibited in 2008.

We extend sincere sympathy from the
Art Institute staff and its members to
the Lipetzky and Maio families in this
time of loss.

New Format For Plein-Air Paint-Outs:
SDAI Paint-Outs will be held on the rst Saturday of each
month.
Locations will be at various San Diego County or Southern
Orange County locations.
Two or three of these may be in Balboa Park.
Locations will be announced in the bi-monthly SDAI Journal
with the e-mail address of the host of each event. The host for
each event is to be contacted by e-mail for sign up and detailed
information and directions on where to meet, etc.
An e-mail list of interested participants will be maintained
by Richard Powers and announcements will be sent to all on
the list prior to each event in addition to the SDAI Journal
announcements.
The events will be open to anyone desiring to participate,
whether members of SDAI or not.
There will be at least one juried show at SDAIs Museum
of the Living Artist per year for about 20 paintings running
simultaneously with one of the Regional Shows.
All painting canvases or watercolor papers are to be stamped
and dated at each event to prove they were done in the program.
Only paintings done within the program can be submitted for the
show.
Paintings are limited to a maximum size of 12 x 16 and should
be framed in appropriate plein-air frames with wire hangers.
Up to 3 paintings can be submitted by each artist for the show.
Non-members of SDAI will pay an entry fee of $20. There is no
fee for SDAI or SDAD members.
All paintings must be hand-delivered to SDAI:Museum of the
Living Artist and picked up at the end of the show. The co-hosts
for these SDAI Paint-Outs are Richard Powers and Mark Slusser,
with occasional assistance from Mark Fehlman.
NOTICE: We have made a couple of minor changes to the program
in order for more people to participate and to have an alternate
day in the event of bad weather. Some folks have partners who
work during the week and need the weekend time for family.
Others prefer to paint on Saturday as they work during the
week. Others just want to paint anytime. Thus we will be having
a Saturday and a Thursday each month at the same location;
you can even paint on both days. Of course you can paint at the
monthly location anytime during the month as long as you have
your canvases/paper stamped at one of the scheduled event days
for that month. The stamp date is changed each month, so be
sure you have your canvas stamped with the date of the location
for that month. Keep in mind that the purpose of these Paint-
Outs is to have the camaraderie of painting together and sharing
comments and informal critique at the end of each Paint-Out.
The date for the SDAI Plein-Air show has been set for Decem-
ber 10 through January 16 with room for 20 juried paintings. A re-
ception will be held in conjunction with the December Regional
and One-Foot Shows on December 10. Entries are to be submit-
ted November 19 through 28 at SDAI:Museum of the Living Art-
sit, 1439 El Prado, San Diego, (619) 236-0011. No late entries will
be accepted. Up to 3 entries may be submitted by each artist.
Pick-Up for paintings not chosen can be on or after December
10 during normal museum hours, not during the reception. Paint-
ings in the show need to be picked up after January 21 during
normal museum hours.
Jurying will be done by noted Southern California artist Scott
Prior on November 30th.
Eligible paintings must have been done at the Paint-Outs held
in June (Mission Trails), July (Sunset Cliffs), August (Rancho
Peasquitos), September (Reecting Pool, Balboa Park), Octo-
ber (Tuna Harbor, San Diego Bay) and November (Old Town San
Diego). Eligible paintings must have been stamped on the back
with the SDAI Paint-Out stamp at the time of each event.
Note: Watercolors will be stamped on the back near one edge. At
the time of framing the stamped area is to be cut off before mat-
ting and the backing are put into the frame. This cutoff portion is
then to be glued to the outside of the backing (visible after fram-
ing) so that the juror can determine it was painted during one
of these events. Any artist is able to enter the show if they have
participated in at least one of the monthly Paint-Outs. Non mem-
bers will pay an entry fee of $20, for members of SDAI:MOLA or
SDAD there is no entry fee.
November 6 & 11 - Old Town San Diego, meet at 9:00 am
(These paintings will be the last ones eligible for this years
Plein-Air show at the SDAI:MOLA)
December 4th & 9th - Sunset Cliffs, meet at 9:00 am
January 8 & 13 - Kit Carson Park, The Duck Pond,
meet at 9:00 am
(Due to the rst Saturday being New Years Day both Paint-Outs
have been slid one week to the second Saturday and following
Thursday.)

Help SDAD raise $2,500 for a new kiln!
The kiln is a very important part of the San Diego Art
Department. We teach glass fusing classes and workshops
that are some of the few glass fusing classes offered in the
San Diego area. We also offer our students and the public
the opportunity to re their works of art for a small fee,
which is an important source of income for SDAD. We also
use the kiln to atten/recycle wine bottles which are sold
as cheese trays.
A little can go a long way! To make a contribution please
contact SDAD at 619-299-4278 or stop by our studio in North
Park (3830 Ray Street)!

Twenty Eyes
Uniformity, John Noel: Symmetry and disciplined ornament cast their
beauty on the tenement re escape.
One Way on Ray, Victoria Polyak: When I see a familiar corner on an
unfamiliar surface, I know that there is as much light in the city as there
is sun in the country.
Crash, Keith Parks: I dashed a hundred curves against a hard at. They
curl into a bright shell.
Delhi Curtain # 2, Garret Demarest: Behind one rich silk they hung
another.
Return to Self, Ellen Dieter: When I look into myself I see only darkness
and indistinct form. When I look outside I see an enormous ower, pulsing with my own blood.
My Pantheon, Thomas Tirado: My symmetry is not your symmetry. These lines converge
for me. These distortions are my own.
Untitled, Richard Messenger: Trust grey. Trust the ghosts of branches. Trust the
horizontal line.
Above La Jolla Shores, Michael Taylor: We have learned where form ends and color
begins. We have learned the geometry of hills.
Marni, Matt Welsh: In her inside I see her outside. Her toes are naked on the warm rug, but her
face is blank as an empty beach.
Homage to J. A. #2, Jack Fletcher: The line is at war with extension through space. I will marry
the square to the scattering of light.
