This morning take the high speed train to Taiyuan, the capital of
shanxi province, and then coach to Pingyao (approximately 6
hours). Upon arrival, visit the Pingyao Ancient City. Pingyao still
retains its city layout from the Ming and Qing dynasties, conforming
to a typical Ba gua pattern. More than 300 sites in or near the city
have ancient ruins. The streets and storefronts still largely retain

After breakfast, coach back to Taiyuan, en route, visiting the Qiao
courtyard, also names Zaizhong tang. It is the residential
compound of well-known financier Qiao Zhiyong (18181907),
who is the most famous member of the Qiao family. It is considered
to be one of the finest remaining examples of imposing private
residences in northern China, and has been converted into a
museum and has many period furnishings. Afterwards, visit Jin
Memorial Temple. The weather here is warm in winter and cool in
summer, and the land is beautiful. Ancient buildings, blue spring
water, and superb clay sculpture have been attractions to tourists

This morning transfer to Mountain Wutai scenic area. Mount Wutai
is one of the Four Sacred Mountains in Chinese Buddhism. Each of
the four mountains is viewed as the bodhima of one of the four
great bodhisattvas. Mountain Wutai is the home of the Bodhisattva
of wisdom. The site is home to many of China's most important
monasteries and temples. Mount Wutai host over 53 sacred
monasteries, including these famous Xiangtong Temple, Tayuan

Monastery, which is notable not only for its location on a sheer
precipice but also because it is the only existing temple with the

wood tower, the tallest wooden architectural structure in China

This morning visit Yungang Grottoes, which were built 1500 years
ago. They are an outstanding example of the Chinese stone
carvings from the 5th and 6th centuries. All together the site is
composed of 252 grottoes with more than 51,000 Buddha statues
and statuettes. Afterwards, pay a visit to Huayan Temple, the
largest and most perfectly preserved temple of the Liao (916-1125)
and Jin (1115-1234) dynasties and the Nine Dargon Wall. (B/L/D)
