1,563 LTE User Devices

GSA monitors and researches worldwide mobile
broadband developments and publishes facts,
statistics and trends. 275 LTE networks are
commercially launched globally. GSA forecasts this
will rise to 350 networks by end 2014 (see GSAs
Evolution to LTE report). There were 200.1 million
LTE subscriptions globally by December 31, 2013.

1,563 LTE user devices including frequency and
carrier variants are announced by 154 suppliers
according to GSAs latest research. 742 new LTE
devices were launched in the past year,
representing 90% YoY growth. The number of
suppliers increased by 58% to 154 in the same
period (March 2013 = 97 suppliers). LTE devices
address all product segments see chart below:

1,563 LTE user devices - form factors
March 2014 GSA Global mobile Suppliers Association

Smartphones are the largest LTE device category.
636 smartphones are announced, including operator
and frequency variants, representing 40.6% share
of all LTE device types. LTE-connected tablets and
personal hotspots are both fast-growing segments.

Most devices operate in the FDD mode. However,
387 devices now support LTE TDD mode (TD-LTE).

3500 MHz band 42,43 17 devices

Note 1: Manufacturers have not declared operating frequencies
or fallback modes for some products

Note 2: Certain products are carrier or country specific and are
therefore not available in all markets

LTE / 3G fallback support

1,130 LTE devices also operate on either
HSPA, HSPA+ or DC-HSPA+ networks
570 LTE devices support DC-HSPA+
359 LTE devices also support EV-DO
105 LTE devices also support TD-SCDMA

99% of LTE phones are multimode/3G capable
36% of LTE phones support DC-HSPA+

93% of LTE tablets are multimode/3G capable
26% of LTE tablets support DC-HSPA+

Category 4 devices

LTE UE device Category 4 offers an enhanced user
experience supporting a peak downlink data rate up
to 150 Mbps and peak uplink up to 50 Mbps.
Operators in at least 25 countries have
commercially launched or are deploying networks
that support Cat 4 devices. 233 devices support
Category 4, which is about 15% of all LTE devices.

Category 6 devices

LTE-Advanced systems operate in spectrum
allocations wider than 2 x 20 MHz used in most LTE
deployments. Many operators are engaged in LTE-
Advanced deployments. Most support user devices
up to Category 4 using the full 20 MHz of spectrum.

LTE-Advanced 300 Mbps systems (with Category 6
devices) represent a further gain by combining 40
MHz of paired spectrum using carrier aggregation.
The first commercially launched 300 Mbps LTE-
Advanced service was confirmed in February 2014.
Within the 1,563 total of LTE devices confirmed in
this report, 3 devices support Category 6.

VoLTE devices

GSA monitors the VoLTE ecosystem. Initially
operators have deployed VoLTE for delivering HD
voice for LTE users. VoLTE requires an LTE core
and radio network and the user terminal supports
SIP-based voice services, i.e. IP based
communication services over an IMS core network.
So to support VoLTE, operators need new LTE
smartphones which incorporate chipsets that enable
the VoLTE service over IMS, as well as having new
software in the phone. 57 phones including carrier
and frequency variants support VoLTE.

1800 MHz: most popular LTE band

1800 MHz is the most popular spectrum for LTE
deployments and is used in 43% of commercially
launched LTE networks globally. GSA believes that
1800 MHz (3GPP band 3) will continue as the
prominent band for LTE network deployments for
the foreseeable future and be the major enabling
band for international LTE roaming services.

589 LTE1800 (band 3) user devices are
announced. 356 LTE1800 devices have been
introduced over the past year.

GSA confirms 1800 MHz (band 3) is the best
supported band by device manufacturers and
has the largest device ecosystem.

Smartphones (260 devices) represent 44% of the
total today, and tablets (44 devices) have over 7%
share. For the current worldwide market situation of
LTE network deployments using 1800 MHz
spectrum see GSAs Status of the Global
LTE1800 Market report download via the link on
http://www.gsacom.com
LTE TDD devices

In 3GPP it was decided from the beginning that LTE
should support both FDD and TDD modes with the
minimum possible difference between the two
modes. The emphasis has been on leveraging
synergies between the modes to the largest extent
possible. The result is that almost all parts of the
LTE specifications are the same for both FDD and
TDD. Although the majority of LTE devices have
been produced for use on FDD spectrum, aligning
with the scale of FDD network deployments, the
availability of LTE user devices for TDD systems is
growing strongly, as shown below. For the current
worldwide LTE TDD market situation including
network deployments and commercial launches see
GSAs Status of the Global LTE TDD Market
report download via the link on www.gsacom.com

387 devices (221 more than a year ago) can
operate in LTE TDD mode, supporting the growing
number of LTE operators using unpaired spectrum.
LTE TDD devices are available in all form factors
see chart below.

387 LTE TDD user devices - form factors
GSA Global mobile Suppliers Association

Bands 38 (2.6 GHz) and 40 (2.3 GHz) have the
largest choice of terminals.
Terminal support for band 38 is 72%
Terminal support for band 40 is 69%
Terminal support for band 41 is 31%
Terminal support for band 39 is 32%

There is a growing choice of multiband and dual
mode FDD-TDD devices, e.g. the band 7/40
combination is supported in 129 devices, and the
band 3/38 combination is supported in 123 devices.
Several operators are committed to deploying LTE
TDD systems in 3.5 / 3.6 GHz spectrum (bands 42,
43), representing an exciting and important global
opportunity for the industry. GSA encourages all
chipset and user device manufacturers to support
bands 42, 43 in their product roadmaps. 17 user
devices in bands 42/43 have been announced.
APT700

Adoption of the APT700 band plan (698-806 MHz)
by many countries across APAC and Latin America
confirms the strong momentum and represents a
major opportunity for global spectrum harmonization
for LTE systems, paving the way for ensuring the
greatest economies of scale for devices and
capacity for mobile broadband, and roaming.

APT700 FDD band plan (3GPP Band 28)

703-748 MHz for the uplink
10 MHz guard band
758-803 MHz for the downlink

APT700 TDD band plan 703-803 MHz (Band 44)

The FDD plan configuration (Band 28) has
attracted the most support. GSA is not aware of
any country or regulator anywhere in the world
adopting or recommending allocation of
spectrum according to Band 44 (the TDD band
plan). APT700 spectrum has been allocated to
operators in several markets including Australia, Fiji,
Japan, New Zealand, and Taiwan where LTE-
enabled mobile broadband networks using band 28
spectrum are now being built.

On September 23, 2013 Telstra, GSM Association
and GSA launched a joint promotion of the APT700
spectrum band for 4G/LTE networks. This band is
already identified for use in markets covering more
than 2 billion people. The aim is to highlight further
the many socio-economic benefits of greater global
alignment around this band. Press release

The first commercial APT700 (band 28) user
devices have now been launched in the market.

On January 24, 2014 Telstra announced
successful completion of the worlds first
APT700 call. For more information, visit/log in to
