students know and be able to do
after this lesson? Include the
ABCDs of objectives: action,
behavior, condition, and degree of
mastery, i.e., "C: Given a sentence
written in the past or present tense,

Note: Degree of mastery does not
need to be a percentage.)

Teaching Subtraction...

Given a subtraction problem, students will be able to use objects to properly subtract the
smaller number from the bigger number without any counting errors.

What background knowledge is
necessary for a student to
successfully meet these
objectives?
Example: Need to know rules to
play a game, how to work with
others, etc...

Students need to know their numbers up to 10. They also need to be familiar with
drawing or using little objects to help them solve the equation.

with addition. I will model a couple subtraction problems on the board and show how
objects, my fingers, or little drawings can help to solve the problem. Students will then
be given their workbooks and they will be instructed to turn to page 8. We will do the
first one together and they will be left alone to do the rest. Walk around while students
are completing this page in order to monitor how well each child is doing.
Meeting your students needs as
people and as learners
If applicable, how does this lesson connect to the interests and cultural backgrounds of
your students?
All students like to draw/look at pictures, so they will be able to use this in order to solve
the problem. Students can also draw whatever simple picture they want, which leaves it
open for any diversity.
If applicable, how does this lesson connect to/reflect the local community?
All students at the age of 4/5 who are entering the Kindergarten must be familiar with
the basics of subtraction in order to succeed in the following grades.

How will you incorporate the arts (visual, dance and movement, music, drama,
multimedia)?
The students will be able to draw their own pictures, look at colorful pictures in their
workbook, and use body parts such as fingers, toes, etc. to complete the equations.

Materials
(What materials will you use? Why
did you choose these materials?
Include any resources you used.
This can also include people!)

I will use the white board for modeling, the students workbooks, colored pencils, pencils,
any objects around the room that are helpful
