The Crucible Act 3

The well known novel, The crucible , is based off true events during the Salem
witch trials, which took place in the early 1900s. any people were accused of
being a witch and!or causing harm to the colonist in the "mericas. #n the acts
that have led up to act ###, many women have been accused and charged of
immoral crimes. $uring this time era religion was a ma%or ob%ects in peoples
life, it is believed that religion had an influence on the witch trials. #t is also
believed that the trials were to keep women from gaining to much power, they
were not suppose to be the upper authority so therefore in the were in %ail
and!or hung they couldnt receive power over men.
"t the beginning of act ### &udge 'awthorne is in the court house and the trials
for that day have started. (irst on trial is artha )orey, accused of witchcraft,
but *iles doesnt agree with this accusation and is convinced that this is r.
+utnams way of ac,uiring new land for himself. To solve the problem and to
see if *iles )oreys accusation is true the %udge, the deputy governor, both the
reverends, and (rancis %oin *iles in the vestry room to discuss the matter at
hand. -hile the )orey.+utnam situation is being solved to more people, +roctor
and ary -arren, enter the room. Shortly after +roctor and s.-arren enter
the room, ary tells the others thats the girls and herself were only
pretending to be affected by witch craft, nothing had really happened to them.
The towns authority was surprised that the girls would come up with such
accusations against the towns people, &udge $anforth has asked +roctor if he
has informed the town about the confession of the girl. #n reaction to such lies,
+aris suggest over throwing the court and $anforth ,uestions &ohn to see if he
is conspiring to ignore the courts authority. &ohn calmly states that he only
wants to have his wife back. )heever, who was sitting ,uietly watching the
following events, has no problem in telling the %udge that %ohn tore up
/li0abeths warrant for her arrest, along with the fact the +roctor breaks the
law on Sunday and plows his land. &udge $anforth begins to ask &ohn about his
religion, and is shocked that &ohn barely goes to church. &ohn doesnt really
show any concern about what happens to himself, he %ust worries about his
wife because he knows she isnt guilty of witch craft, she is %ust a good
religiously, godly woman that does as she should. To much of +roctors surprise
the %udges tell him not to worry about her, /li0abeth has claimed to be
pregnant and wont be hung until after she births her baby. +roctor is asked to
drop his charge against the court but he wont, instead he returns with a
protest signed by ninety.one land owning citi0ens of Salem, each and every
person speaks of what good people artha, /li0abeth, and 1ebecca are. 1ev.
+aris suggest that all ninety.one people be prosecuted for this protest because
it seems to attack the court and undermined authority of Salem.
2ater in act ###, "bigail -illiams is brought into the court room, she is called
there by &udge $anforth. -hen s. -illiams and her friends arrive she is
,uestioned about ary -arrens confession, "bigail disagrees with all of it.
ary repeats that the girls are only pretending and none of this is real. To
prove her true, 'awthorne ask ary to pretend to faint for the court but she
replies she cant because she doesnt known how to. ary -arren is under so
much pressure that she ,uickly says she only thought she saw spirits but it
wasnt really real. Soon $anforth tries to get "bigail to tell them all the truth
but she %ust shivers then states that ary had send a cold wind upon them.
3nowing that "bigail and her girls are lying, +roctor stands up and yells that
"bigail is a whore, and admits to his affair with her, which e4plained why
/li0abeth fired her when she found out about the situation. &ohn e4claims that
"bigail wanted /li0abeth to be hung so she could take his wifes place in the
home. -hen &ohn (inishes his accusations against "bigail the %udge tells both
of them to turn around then send for rs. +roctor. 5pon /li0abeths arrival she
is asked why was "bigail fired, confused she looks at &ohn for help but is
ordered to %ust look at the %udge. /li0abeth states that she thought &ohn had a
thing for "bigail and in rage fired the child without a reason, as rs. +roctor
leaves %ohn yells that he confessed his sin, but the story couldnt be changed.
#n all the commotion all the girls shout that ary is sending spirits at them,
that they need help. art begs them to stop but they %ust keep repeating their
accusing words over and over. /verybody in the room looks around in fear and
e4citement, but they are confused about the fake happenings among them.
ary becomes scared with everybodys commotion and begins to yell and shout
as well. +roctor tries to help her but she moves abruptly from him and says he
is the devils man. She accuses &ohn +roctor of speaking with the devil and
trying to get her to %oin his evil ways. &ohn is arrested after all the accusation
and his confession to adultery and after trial is proven guilty among all the
accusations.
