AREA BUSINESS with ROGER BLUHM
Email scams are causing problems
Andy Deutsch checks toppings at Roxys Frozen Yogurt on Tuesday. The business
opened on July 16. (Roger Bluhm/photo)
T
he email from Ender-
lins Tracy Ekeren
was sent out from her
work email account.
Ekeren, according to the
message, made a quick trip
to Istanbul, Turkey, for a
business program, but she
was later mugged.
While she still had her
passport, she was in need of
money to pay the hotel bills
and to pay for a cab ride to
the airport.
Te email was signed
with the signature Ekeren
uses on her email account,
down to the Facebook list-
ing at the end.
Tere were just two
problems with the email
-- Ekeren never lef North
Dakota and the phone
number had been changed
slightly.
Its a headache, Ekeren
said. Its a scam and weve
had to change our password
a few times.
Ive gotten 22 calls, some
texts, some emails, Ive been
stopped in the store. Its
been ridiculous.
Te email was dated July
11.
One person emailed
back and said something
about they were sure my
dad would send me the
money, but then she real-
ized she had just saw me in
the store, Ekeren said. It
was then she said, It was a
scam!
Email scams are not new.
Everyone remembers get-
ting
that
email
from
a Nigerian who promises
millions in exchange for
some help.
But now some folks are
hacking into real email
accounts and, by changing
just a small thing, like the
phone number, and coming
up with a plausible story,
sending that email to the
contacts listed for the ac-
count.
Its been a headache
more than anything else,
said Ekeren, who asked that
we not reveal her employers
information. Im glad no-
body fell for it.

I
want to personally thank Valley City
Chief of Police Fred J. Tompson for
writing a letter to the editor last week.
Tompson replied to a letter that we
printed a week before from Lloyd Nelson.
Now, Im not about to jump into the debate
the two had or even address the topic, but I
want to thank both
for their letters and
encourage every
one of our readers
to send in letters
if they have some-
thing they wish to
share with others.
Letters to the edi-
tor are a great way
to get topics going.
In no way was either
Nelson or Tomp-
sons letters edited
as both were written well, werent slander-
ous in nature and were to the point.
Letters to the editor have been a part of
newspapers for a long time. Ofen when a
topic is written about in a newspaper, the
writer does not take a side, but presents the
facts as they are provided to them.
A good example would be the Afordable
Care Act, or Obamacare as its called.
Most news stories about the subject have
been about the content of the law, how to
get care through the law or eforts to re-
verse the law.
Many people throughout the nation
have expressed their own opinions of the
Afordable Care Act through letters to the
editor.
A large majority
of those letters sug-
gest the Afordable
Care Act is not good
for our nation.
My opinion
doesnt matter, but
the readers opinion
do. While I can put
forth an editorial
or opinion column
on any subject,
its great when the
readers take things into their own hands
and write to us.
So thank you to everyone who has writ-
ten a letter to the editor and I ask that let-
ters continue to come.
Te easiest way for anyone to know the
pulse of a community is to read letters to
the editor.

W
ith the world growing it is
important to look over the
younger generations. More
and more people are starting to trust
the care of their children to other
people with the population of working
parents growing rapidly.
I defnitely think that there is a
need for more childcare in the area, I
have a waiting list and my frst open-
ing is in December, said a Valley City
childcare provider, who didnt want to
be named.
An increase is also needed because
North Dakotas population continues
to grow and more people are moving
to the state for work.
When putting your child in a daycare
facility there are things to consider: the
number of children they will be play-
ing with, the location and the qualif-
cations of the person in charge of your
child. Tese can all be answered by
asking other parents and going to the
daycare provider itself.
I think longevity is key; how well
they retain their turnover rate with the
kids and clients, said Nikki Wolf. Wolf
is a childrens caregiver in the town
of Lisbon at the Imagination Child

FORGET MISTAKES. FORGET FAILURES. FORGET EVERYTHING EXCEPT WHAT YOURE GOING TO DO NOW AND DO IT. WILLIAM DURANT
We are beginning a new
series in which we are in-
terviewing gardeners at the
Valley City Community
Gardens. Each gardener will
be asked the same questions.
As the interviewer, I have
been encouraged by the
consistent information pro-
vided about gardening.
Tis week we are talking
with Alice Beauchman, who
was with her granddaughter
Cinny Corbin.
How long have you been
gardening?
Alice: Tis is my third
summer with this same
plot.
Before gardening here,
I have been gardening for
years -- and years before!
What is your favorite or
most unique thing to plant?
Alice: Kohlrabi is my most
unique plant, but I stay with
the basics that I know my
family likes.
What is the most difcult
thing you have grown?
Alice: Watermelon seems
to be the plant that causes
the most difculty for me.
What unique technique do
you use to control weeds or
minimize gardening tasks,
etc.?
Alice: I have found the
stirrup rake to be the most
helpful gardening tool I have
to control weeds.
What one tip would you
give fellow gardeners?
Alice: Keep up with the
weeds.
How did you get interested
in gardening?
Alice: My grandmother.
What have you learned
about organic gardening?
Alice: It seems much
tougher to kill bugs, but I
know that the garden pro-
duce is much safer for my
family.
Do you have any tips to
share about organic garden-
ing?
I have to refer back to my
tip to others, keep up with
the weeds.

Development Center.
Many of these can be seen
as positives and negatives
on each side. An in-home
care provider will probably
be able to give your child
more attention because they
will probably have fewer
numbers that they are car-
ing for. On the other hand
they do have to do all their
own cooking, and cleaning
which could mean a dis-
tracted caregiver.
A public provider, on the
other hand, will have more
children to watch over.
Meals will be better pre-
pared and most likely there
will be a cleaning service to
help out.
Te ability to ofer ad-
ditional services like trans-
portation and things like
that. Our center is able to
provide transportation,
whereas a home facility usu-
ally cant do that, said Wolf
when explaining the difer-
ences between an in-home
facility and a public one.
Around the area there
are more public childcare
providers than in-home.
Te main diferences are
that your child would be
around a higher number
of children and would have
a more structured experi-
ence. Most public care has
more of a curriculum a level
below preschool versus an
in-home care center.
When someone is inter-
ested in beginning a child-
care facility they have to
have certain qualifcations.
As a parent concerned with
whom you are leaving your
child with you can always
contact social services to
do a check on the qualif-
cations of the provider you
have chosen for your child.
Another way is to ask other
parents who have their chil-
dren in the same facility.
Some things to look for
are frst aid and cardio-
pulmonary resuscitation
(CPR) certifcations. Also,
as previously mentioned
turnover rates are also very
important.

FAITHFULLY
A
few years
ago I was
back in
my old home-
town and had
invited some
friends to gather
and go out to
eat at a little res-
taurant in town.
We gathered around a couple of
tables and enjoyed the meal and
caught up with what was going
on in our lives. At the end of the
meal I was about to pay for our
food but there was a problem. I
had brought a debit card which
wasnt a form of payment they
accepted. I had not brought any
cash or a check which would have
been allowed. So because the bill
had to be paid I sheepishly asked
one of the other people there to
pay. It was a little embarrassing
and reminded me of the old
FAITHFULLY: 9
A free
lunch
By the Rev.
Dennis NORBY
THE GREAT QUESTION - WHICH I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO ANSWER - IS: WHAT DOES A WOMAN WANT? SIGMUND FREUD
07.25.14 the independent PAGE 09
FAITHFULLY: FROM 8
clich, Tere is no such thing as a free lunch.
Te Prophet Isaiah however has a message for the people
of Israel in chapter 55 of his book. In verse 1 he imitates
the sound of a marketplace saying, Come, everyone who
thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come,
buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and
without price. It sounds like a free lunch doesnt it?
Te Scriptures sometimes speak of longing and yearning
for food and water as analogy for longing for God. In Psalm
34:10 it says, Te young lions sufer want and hunger; but
those who seek the LORD lack no good thing. In the Ser-
mon on the Mount Jesus said, Blessed are those who hun-
ger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfed.
We understand what it is to be hungry physically. We have
had our stomachs growl and have had parched lips hoping
for refreshment.
Isaiahs words are not spoken without something backing
up the ofer. You see the people of Israel to whom Isaiah was
writing to had nothing to ofer of value to receive the food
they needed. In the same way I needed someone else to pay
for my meal, so too we all need someone to provide to us
spiritual food. We dont have any currency that is accepted.
Te invitation to eat and drink is a real one made possible
by the Sufering Servant that is spoken of in Isaiah 52:13-
53:12. It is Jesus who has paid the price with His blood
and ofers to us everything we need to sustain us. Isaiah
53:11-12 says, Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see
and be satisfed; by his knowledge shall the righteous one,
my servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he
shall bear their iniquities. Terefore I will divide him a por-
tion with them many, and
he shall divide the spoil
with the strong, because he
poured out his soul to death
and was numbered with the
transgressors; yet he bore
the sin of many, and makes
intercession for the trans-
gressors.
So again we see that the
food and drink that we
need is ofered to us freely as
a gif from God. It is a free
lunch for us but was paid for
at the Cross of Calvary by
Jesus Christ the Son of God.

SCAMS: from 2
n Roxys Frozen Yogurt has opened on Main Street in
Valley City.
Te business, owned and operated by Max Drake, is
open from noon to 11 p.m. through the summer. Fall
and winter hours will be announced at a later date.
Te place has been busy since opening on July 16. A
family member said the lobby has been packed each day
its been open and that the hot weather helped bring in
the business.
Drake named the business for his sister, who passed
away a year ago and always wanted to own a frozen
yogurt shop.
Drakes nephew, Andy Deutsch, works at the shop
named afer his mother.
n Main Street Variety is closing its doors in Valley
City.
Furniture and knick-knacks have been brought out-
side the building and have been sold in a going-out-of-
business rummage sale for several days.
Really Big Music, the other business formerly located
in the building on the northeast corner of Main and 3rd
Avenue East, has relocated to Central Avenue next to
Extreme Printing.
Family members helping with the rummage sale said
once everything is sold, they believed the building could
be demolished.
So far, weve received no word yet on future plans for
that location.
