MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL

"It can happen. It does happen.
But it can't happen if you quit." Lauren Dane.
We are what we repeatedly do.
Excellence then is not an act, but a habit. Aristotle
It gives me immense pleasure to pen a few words for our e-bulletin. At the onset I would like to thank the
last years editors and congratulate the newly selected editors for the current year.
Our first consideration is always in the best interest of the students. Our goal is to promote academic
excellence and continuous improvement.
I believe that excellence in education is aided by creating a learning environment in which all learners are
supported in maximizing their potential and talents. Education needs to focus on personalized learning
and instruction, while promoting an education system that is impartial, universally accessible, and meeting
the needs of all students.
It is of paramount importance that our learners have sufficient motivation and encouragement in order to
achieve their aims. We are all very proud of you, our students, and your accomplishments and look
forward to watching as you put your mark on the profession in the years ahead.
The call of the time is to progress, not merely to move ahead. Our progressive Management is looking
forward and wants our Institute to flourish as a Post Graduate Institute of Excellence. Steps are taken in
this direction and fruits of these efforts will be received by our students in the near future. Our Teachers
are committed and dedicated for the development of the institution by imparting their knowledge and play
the role of facilitator as well as role model to our students.
The Pharmacy profession is thriving with a multitude of possibilities, opportunities and positive
challenges. At Guru Nanak Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, our focus is on holistic
needs of our students.
I am confident that the students of GNIPST will recognize all the possibilities, take full advantage of the
opportunities and meet the challenges with purpose and determination.
Excellence in Education is not a final destination, it is a continuous walk. I welcome you to join us on
this path.
My best wishes to all.

Days of the Papyrus Ebers
Though Egyptian medicine dates from about 2900 B.C., best
known and most important pharmaceutical record is the "Papyrus
Ebers" (1500 B.C.), a collection of 800 prescriptions, mentioning
700 drugs. Pharmacy in ancient Egypt was conducted by two or
more echelons: gatherers and preparers of drugs, and "chiefs of
fabrication," or head pharmacists. They are thought to have
worked in the "House of Life." In a setting such as this, the
"Papyrus Ebers" might have been dictated to a scribe by a head
pharmacist as he directed compounding activities in the drug
room.
NEWS UPDATE
Scientists found new calorie-burning switch in
brown fat: (1
st
August, 2014)
Biologists have identified a signaling pathway that switches on a
powerful calorie-burning process in brown fat cells. The study
sheds light on a process known as "brown fat thermogenesis,"
which is of great interest to medical researchers because it
naturally stimulates weight loss and may also protect against
diabetes.

Scientists analyze how influenza-related proteins
help infect cells: (31
st
July, 2014)
Scientists calculate the transformation of a protein associated with
influenza and discover details of intermediate states that may be
treated with new drugs.
Study of twins discovers gene mutation linked to
short sleep duration: (31
st
July, 2014)
Researchers who studied 100 twin pairs have identified a gene
mutation that may allow the carrier to function normally on less
than six hours of sleep per night. The genetic variant also appears
to provide greater resistance to the effects of sleep deprivation.
Clostridium difficile vaccine proves safe, 100
percent effective in animal models: (31

July,
2014)
An experimental vaccine protected 100 percent of animal models
against the highly infectious and virulent bacterium, Clostridium
difficile, which causes an intestinal disease that kills approximately
30,000 Americans annually.
New leads for liver disease treatments: Strict
genomic partitioning by biological clock separates
key metabolic functions: (31
st
July, 2014)
Much of the liver's metabolic function is governed by circadian
rhythms -- our own body clock -- and researchers have now found
two independent mechanisms by which this occurs.

The 'memory' of starvation is in your genes:
(31
st
July, 2014)
Epigenetic 'experiments' -- changes resulting from external rather
than genetic influences -- suggest that the body's physiological
responses to hardship could be inherited, although the underlying
mechanism has been a mystery. Now researchers have discovered a
genetic mechanism that passes on the body's response to
starvation to subsequent generations of worms, with potential
implications for humans also exposed to starvation and other
physiological challenges.
Insular cortex alterations in mouse models of
autism: (31
st
July, 2014)
The insular cortex is an integral "hub," combining sensory,
emotional and cognitive content. Not surprisingly, alterations in
insular structure and function have been reported in many
psychiatric disorders, such as anxiety disorders, depression,
addiction and autism spectrum disorders. Scientists now describe
consistent alterations in integrative processing of the insular
cortex across autism mouse models of diverse etiologies.
'Rewired' mice show signs of longer lives with
fewer age-related illnesses: (31
st
July, 2014)
While developing a new cancer drug, researchers discovered that
mice lacking a specific protein live longer lives with fewer age-
related illnesses. The mice, which lack the TRAP-1 protein,
demonstrated less age related tissue degeneration, obesity, and
spontaneous tumor formation when compared to normal mice.
Their findings could change how scientists view the metabolic
networks within cells.

Disease mutations in mosaicism, rare condition
where cells within the same person have
different genetic makeup: (31
st
July, 2014)
Scientists have long speculated that mosaicism -- a biological
phenomenon, in which cells within the same person have a
different genetic makeup -- plays a bigger role in the transmission
of rare disease mutations than is currently known. A study sheds
new light on the frequency of mosaicism in genomic disorders and
its influence on recurrence risk.

NEUTRACEUTICALS
A nutraceutical is any substance considered as a food, or its part
which, in addition to its normal nutritional value provides health
benefits including the prevention of disease or promotion of
health.
Nutraceutical, was coined from the words nutrition and
pharmaceutical, was coined in 1989 by Stephen L. DeFelice,
founder and chairman of the Foundation of Innovation
Medicine. The term is applied to products that range from
isolated nutrients, dietary supplements and herbal products,
specific diets and processed foods such as cereals, soups, and
beverages.

Classification of Nutraceuticals:
Nutraceuticals are products derived from food sources that are
purported to provide extra health benefits, in addition to the basic
nutritional value found in foods. Depending on the jurisdiction,
products may claim to prevent chronic diseases, improve health,
delay the aging process, increase life expectancy, or support the
structure or function of the body.
Dietary supplements
A dietary supplement is a product that contains nutrients derived
from food products that are concentrated in liquid or capsule form.
In the US, the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act
(DSHEA) of 1994 defined the term: A dietary supplement is a
product taken by mouth that contains a "dietary ingredient"
intended to supplement the diet. The "dietary ingredients" in these
products may include: vitamins, minerals, herbs or other
botanicals, amino acids, and substances such as enzymes, organ
tissues, glandulars, and metabolites. Dietary supplements can also
be extracts or concentrates, and may be found in many forms such
as tablets, capsules, softgels, gelcaps, liquids, orpowders.
Dietary supplements do not have to be approved by the U.S. Food
and Drug Administration (FDA) before marketing, but companies
must register their manufacturing facilities with the FDA. With a
few well-defined exceptions, dietary supplements may only be
marketed to support the structure or function of the body, and
may not claim to treat a disease or condition, and must include a
label that says: These statements have not been evaluated by the
Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to
diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

Functional foods
Functional foods are designed to allow consumers to eat enriched
foods close to their natural state, rather than by taking dietary
supplements manufactured in liquid or capsule form. Functional
foods have been either enriched or fortified, a process
called nutrification. This practice restores the nutrient content in
a food back to similar levels from before the food was processed.
Sometimes, additional complementary nutrients are added, such
as vitamin D to milk.
Health Canada defines functional foods as ordinary food that has
components or ingredients added to give it a specific medical
or physiological benefit, other than a purely nutritional
effect. In Japan, all functional foods must meet three established
requirements: foods should be (1) present in their naturally-
occurring form, rather than a capsule, tablet, or powder; (2)
consumed in the diet as often as daily; and (3) should regulate a
biological process in hopes of preventing or controlling disease.
THE FUTURE OF NUTRACEUTICALS
Increasing awareness levels about fitness and health, spurred by
media coverage are prompting the majority of people to lead
healthier lifestyles, exercise more, and eat healthy. The expanding
nutraceutical market indicates that end users are seeking
minimally processed food with extra nutritional benefits and
organoleptic value. This development, in turn, is propelling
expansion in the nutraceutical markets globally. The emerging
nutraceuticals industry seems destined to occupy the landscape in
the new millennium. Its tremendous growth has implications for
the food, pharmaceutical, healthcare, and agricultural industries.
Many scientists believe that enzymes represent another exciting

frontier in nutraceuticals. "Enzymes have been underemployed...
they're going to be a hot area in the future." Fermentation
technology using microbes to create new food products also
represents potential. Global trends to healthy products cannot be
reversed. Companies taking the lead by investing strategically in
science, product development, marketing and consumer education
will not go unrewarded.
DISEASE RELATED BREAKING NEWS
Ebola virus disease, West Africa (31
st
July,
2014)
Between 24 and 27 July 2014, a total of 122 new cases of Ebola
virus disease (EVD; laboratory-confirmed, probable, and suspect
cases) as well as 57 deaths were reported from Guinea, Liberia,
Nigeria, and Sierra Leone. The Ebola epidemic trend in Guinea,
Liberia, and Sierra Leone remains precarious with ongoing
community and health-facility transmissions of infection. The
surge in the number of new EVD cases calls for concentrated
efforts by all to address the identified problems, such as health
facility transmission and effective contact tracing.
On 29 July 2014, the National IHR Focal Point for Nigeria
confirmed that the probable EVD case notified to WHO on 27
July 2014 was symptomatic at the time of arrival in Nigeria and
that 59 contacts (15 from among the airport staff and 44 from the
hospital) have been identified so far. Read more
