the calendar that whats to

come, whether as refreshing
as gentle rain or as unusual
as another snow, will offer
opportunities for transfor-
mation. And if we open our
eyes to see and attune our
ears to hear, we will contin-
ue the process that God has
begun in us.
What do I predict? I think
that we will need our um-
brellas and that we wont
have to wait until May to
pick flowers.
Ken Watkins
Interim Pastor

On this last day of March, my
mind drifts to my mother,
whose birthday is this
month. In our family, she
was the purveyor of wisdom
and instructions through
idiomatic phrases. Convey-
ing to her children the
truths about spring weath-
er; she told us that March
comes in like a lion and
leaves like a lamb, and that
April showers would bring
forth May flowers. Well,
March roared all month long,
teasing us with a few days of
sunshine, daring us to go
out without jackets, and
then bringing high winds,
torrential rain, and more
snow. If my mother were
alive, she would shrug her
shoulders and sigh in frus-
tration like the rest of us.
What will April be like? The
Aprils bonus this year is that
it contains Easter, and that
Easter is all about surprises.
I think that even Jesus, as-
suming that obedience unto
death would not lead to the
end, was filled with awe
about his own resurrection. I
wonder if he danced around
the tomb just a little bit and
shouted Yes! at least a few
times.
The Biblical record is full of
surprised people -- the wom-
en followers of Jesus, the
first to discover the empty
tomb; Mary Magdalene, the
first of the followers to chat
with Jesus after the Resur-
rection; and the other disci-
ples, either at the tomb or
huddled together back in the
city. Easter, planted smack
dab near the middle of April,
promises us as we look at
Thank you, thank you to
each of you who helped
make a wonderful Lenten
Devotional Booklet. I love
what youve written. I espe-
cially like our meditations
when a number of people
contribute. This season,
there is such a variety: stu-
dents, young people, older
people, internationals, men,
women, etc. Maybe Id bet-
ter not be more specific.
Alan Newton, the Executive
Minister for the Rochester
Genesee, contributed one,
as did Carolyn Piper who
was in charge of the student
ministry at UBC for many
years. In all, 30 different
individuals wrote at least
one. In fact, we had to do
another printing; now the
cover is green. If you have-
nt picked up a copy, youll
want to.

SEARCH COMMITTEE UPDATE
MOVING EXPERIENCES
As many of you may
know, I will be a first-
time homeowner in
the very near fu-
ture. So far, the expe-
rience has been a
positive one, that was
guided by a great real-
tor, sage advice from
friends and family,
and of course lots of
prayer. As I worked
toward narrowing the
properties down to
the eventual one I se-
lected, I was struck by
how each residence
seemed to have its
own personality and
even story attached to
it. In my opinion, this
information went far
beyond the year in
which the structure
was built, what repairs
had been done, and
of course the estimat-
ed value. In many
cases, I could almost
sense the past memo-
ries of happiness and
despair, hope and
change, which for me
was at times a some-
what exhilarating ex-
perience.
I think what I will take
most away from this
experience, howev-
er, is that even great-
er than the potential
places of residences
we will encounter
throughout our lives is
the importance of the
potential connections
we can/should make
with others. Just like
the newer and older
homes I witnessed,
there are countless
people around us in
differing physical and
spiritual conditions
who could benefit
from a new resident
in their lives. As we
move through our
busy days, lets re-
member to take time
out to not only cele-
brate the relation-
ships we already
have, but also be
open to making new
ones that will also fur-
ther the will of the
Creator.
All praises be to our
Lord and Savior,
-Julius
The UBC Pastoral Search Committee continues to work on the profile of UBC
that will be used by potential candidates in deciding whether to express inter-
est in leading our church family. Congregation members will receive a letter
outlining how to access the online survey. Hard copies will be available for
those with no access to computers. Everyone's feedback will be appreciated.
Stay tuned. Please keep us in your prayers.

Last summer, Maryann and I decided to clean out our back yard.
Huge rose bushes had grown up through the trees, and they had pretty
wicked thorns on them. I wore gloves and tried my best to be safe, but the
thorns still tore into my flesh on numerous occasions. Ouch! Maybe double ouch! But that was mild
compared to my childhood experience.

In my first year of high school, a bully decided that I (the 98 pound weakling) was to be his target. In
spite of avoidance tactics, he caught up to me one day and pushed me into a hedge full of sharp
thorns. One of those thorns entered my leg and broke off. In spite of my crying and my protesta-
tions, the doctor said to leave it alone.I did, and it stayed in my leg for nearly 10 years before
emerging one summer. Often I would feel it and have some pain associated with it hitting a nerve
or a blood vessel as it moved around in my leg. It was a constant reminder of the bully and of lifes
difficult moments.

The Apostle Paul also wrote about a thorn in his side. We dont know exactly what he meant by that,
since the term thorn in the side was a common expression of the time. It may have been a physi-
cal ailment that caused him pain, or it may have been a mental or psychological one. Nonetheless,
the pain associated with a permanent thorn was certainly enough to cause him to mention it more
than once, and he used it as a constant reminder of the mission that God had sent him on.

None of this can even begin to compare to what Jesus endured when he was forced to wear a
crown of thorns. The pain of a single large thorn can be excruciating, so I can only imagine what an
entire crown of them must have felt like. And anyone who has ever had a cut in the scalp knows
that it bleeds with much greater apparent force than other areas of the body, so a crown of thorns
poking into the head would cause a constant flow of blood down over the eyes and ears and back of
the neck. Not a pretty picture, and very difficult to concentrate with that going on. Just thinking
about the pain and the blood Christ endured makes me thankful that I had only one thorn to deal
with at a time.

All of us today experience thorns in our flesh at some point in our lives. They may be temporary, as
were the thorns that grabbed my hands in the backyard, or more permanent, as the thorn in my leg
for many years. They may cause bleeding or just a loud ouch. And while none can even begin to
compare to the thorns placed on our Lord, or the nails that pierced his side, hands, and feet, they
can be devastating in so many ways. Our thorn in the side can also be psychological, mental, or
spiritual rather than physical, and it can leave a permanent scar upon our body, our mind, or our
personality.

What are some of the psychological or spiritual thorns we experience? Perhaps the loss of a family
member or a job. Perhaps a boss who acts like a bully. Perhaps someone in the neighborhood who
gets on our nerves. Or maybe it is doubt about ourselves, our past, or our direction in life. Depres-
sion, anger, forgivingness all take their toll on our minds and our bodies.

As we approach Holy Week and the miracle of Easter, there is no better time to hand over the
thorns that afflict us to the one who suffered greater thorns for our redemption Jesus the Christ.
Im trying hard to hand over my pains and afflictions. Will you join me in giving up yours?

BIRTHDAYS AND ANNIVERSARIES

QUARTERLY BUSINESS
MEETING
The Quarterly Business Meeting will
be Sunday, April 27, immediately af-
ter church. Please bring a dish to
share. On the agenda will be several
items critical to the life of the church,
so please plan to attend. Youll be
hearing more about them in a few
weeks.

CHURCH WORK DAY
A Work Day will be held Saturday,
April 12. The following day is the
Palm Sunday service outside on our
lawn, so the day before, we will be
working outside to spruce up the
yard. If the weather doesnt permit,
there is plenty to be done inside.
Plan to attend and help, please.
EASTER POTLUCK
Everyone is welcome to attend UBCs annu-
al Easter Potluck after church on April 20. If
you are planning on attending, please let ei-

bringing what dish. You can reach the
church office at ubccolumbus@gmail.com or
Grace at gracehughes457@gmail.com
CONSTITUTIONAL REVISION
After church on Sunday, April 6, there will be a
meeting to discuss the revisions proposed to the
church constitution. Please plan to attend. Be
sure to get a copy of the proposals before the
meeting so that you can read and mark ques-
tions. Copies are available on line or you can call
the office. I dont plan to go line by line, but ra-
ther article by article, so prepare in advance.
Several individuals, good cooks all, have volun-
teered to make soup, and there will be a variety.
There will also be bread and crackers. Most peo-
ple need bring nothing but themselves and their
marked up copy of the constitution.
