Opening Video

This is an Opening Shift Instructional Video for Deck Managers at Miami

University Aquatic Center.

Montage Video
Throughout the year, you may discover different routines during your shift to
make opening more efficient and quick. However, for the sake of review and
learning, these are specific step-by-step processes for your assistance.
First Steps
At 5:30am, enter the Aquatic Center through the receiving doors. These are
located on the south side of the building next to the outdoor pursuit center.
You will need to swipe your key card. While entering the office dont forget
to punch in.
First while walking into the office turn on the lights, the copier machine, the
radio, the head guard and deck manger computers. On Mondays check the
AED for the green light and expiration date of pads. Next, take a radio turn it
on, and make sure it is on channel 9. Then grab the keys from the lock box.
Remember you can punch in the key code in any order. (Screen shows
1809).
Take the keys, and walk over to the Tunnel Doors. Unlock both sets of doors
for the lifeguards to enter at 5:50. Dont forget to lock these doors again at
6:15.
Unlocking Offices and Scoreboard
After you have unlocked the Tunnel, take the set of keys to the office hallway.
Unlock the doors at both ends of the hallway and unlock the wooden doors at
the middle of the hallway. (ehh)
At the end of the hallway is Terrys office. Unlock it and proceed to turn on
the scoreboard.
Special instructions for turning on the scoreboard.
o Also send up daily messages including birthdays, if needed.
Before going back into the office, check the orange juice cans in the
conference room. If any are expired, or we have less than two, notify the full
time staff immediately.
Office and further procedures
Enter the office from the hallway and check the lifeguard schedule and the
daily schedule. Notice which lifeguards are supposed to be at the pool at
5:50am. As you proceed with your job, dont forget the lifeguards.
Throughout your morning shift it is your job to keep them awake.
Deck and Ice Coolers
Before you walk onto the deck, unlock the double doors to the hallway and
turn on the automatic doors.
Next fill up all the coolers with Ice and Water.
First take all the coolers on the deck to the storage room doors. You may find
different ways to carry them back and forth. (Show a clip of different people
doing different things to carry coolers).
Fill each of these up with ice to the brim inside the cooler.
Next carry the coolers to the water hose located by the double doors to the
50 meter. Make sure you fill all of these completely with water. After they
are filled, take them to their appropriate spots: The leisure pool, and dive
well. During long course a water cooler is placed near the office windows. In
short course season, a water cooler is placed by both the east and west pools.
PAUSE: Lifeguards
At this time lifeguards are arriving for their morning shift. Be sure that they
take out a radio and a clipboard to the correct chairs. (Dont give them the
wrong clipboard).
Continue to Check the Deck.
Before or after guards arrive you should be finishing up your opening duties
by performing a deck check.
All pool signs are properly in place
Starting on the South end of the 50 meter pool, check the safety equipment
on the guard chairs:
o Make sure the reaching pole is secure
o Ensure that there is a red fanny pack attached to the chair
This should be complete with a green ready tag attached to the
side. If the tag is absent, or has a red tag, switch it out with the
spare red fanny pack located in the large blue cabinet in the
office.
o Lastly check that the backboard is properly placed at the back of the
chair, and the straps are neatly rolled up in place. Each backboard
must have a red tube attached to the back, in between the head
braces.
As you walk around the pool deck, look around the floor for trash and lost
and found objects.
Make sure the proper depth signs are in place around the 50 meter.
Double check the emergency doors around the pool deck and that emergency
socks and towels are in the correct spots.
When youve reached the Dive Well ensure that the tower gates are locked.

The Dry Erase Board
o Once most of your opening duties are finished, change the dry erase board to
match the scoreboard dates. The markers to the dry erase boards are located
in the office, on the blue counter next to the sub book and fitness log. Make
sure you change the date, and double check all the times associated with the
day.
Wet Classroom
o Unlock the wet classroom and make sure everything has been cleaned up.
Leisure Pool
o Remember the Aquatic Center leisure pool is open at 7 am Monday- Friday, 8
am on Saturday, and 10 am on Sunday. These times could be subject to
change. (Show a person looking at the schedule).
o Unlock the double doors to the leisure pool in the hallway, turn on the
automatic door, and then unlock both sets of double doors, which exit to the
50-meter.
o Please double check that the deck is clean and ready to be used for the day
o This includes picking up trash, arranging chairs, making sure all LTS
toys are put away, and that all the life jackets are in there correct
spots.
Patio
o The patio is open seasonally from April 1rst to October 31rst. Open the patio
when you open the leisure pool at 7am.
o First unlock both sets of double doors and place the closed signs in the
windowsill.
o Weather permitting, put up umbrellas at each table.
o The umbrellas are located in the outside storage room, which is to
your left as you walk out onto the patio. Its also very close to the exit
doors of the wet classroom
o Use the keys from the lock box to open the storage room. To your
right should be each umbrella for the tables.
o Each umbrella clicks into place as you put them in as seen on the
video.
o Lastly make sure the patio is completely clean and void of trash and lost and
found items.
