David G. Taylor, Editor
March 2014
David prepares to take a city tour
on The London Helicopter.
Welcome,
Bienvenue,
Welkom,
Willkommen,
Bienvenido,
Benvenuto...
Winter ofcially turns to spring this
month and as blooms, buds and
blossoms begin to emerge around
the capital, this is the perfect time to
head over to Chiswick House for its
colourful Camellia Festival (p. 38).
Its rather a big month for festivals,
with everything from amenco
dancing to Russian culture to
discover (p. 10-14). And Id always
recommend seeing iconic sights like
the Tower Of London and The Shard.
These days you can experience them
on foot, by bus and boat, or even y
over them in a helicopter (p. 38).
Your adventure starts here. Enjoy!

Germanys George Frideric Handel is famous for his Baroque operas and songs including
the exquisite Messiah. Whats less known is that he lived and worked in London from 1712,
so theres no better place to pay homage. The city continues to serve him with a pool of
extraordinary performers, says Laurence Cumming, festival Musical Director, whos secured
names like Europes La Nuova Musica (above, 12 Mar) for the event. Other highlights range
from the opera Arianna In Creta (3-6 Mar) at the Royal College of Music, to the annual Handel
Singing Competition (18 Mar) at St. Georges, Hanover Square (Handels local parish church).

In Russia and the Ukraine,
Maslenitsa is famous as a
celebration marking both Lent and an
ancient festival of the sun. Meanwhile, here in London once a year, the family-friendly
Russian Maslenitsa festival in Trafalgar Square promises fabulous dance and music
performances with styles ranging from classical to pop, as well as jazz and traditional folk.
Younger visitors will enjoy its childrens programme, featuring the interactive Theatre Chudaki
and a range of fun activities linked to the recent Sochi Winter Games. Visitors can also browse
food stalls galore, tucking into traditional Eastern European cuisine like borscht, then wander
around the gorgeous arts and crafts fair. Mayor Boris Johnson says, Londons Maslenitsa
celebrations are a sure sign that spring is on its way, so put on your sunniest face and come
along. The Sunday event runs from 1.30pm-7pm. Trafalgar Square, WC2N 5DN. 020 8832

Londons celebration of the patron saint of Ireland is the third largest in the world. Now in
its 13th year, the St. Patricks Day Parade attracts over 100,000 people, many from the
capitals large Irish community, although everyone is invited to join in the fun. Taking place the
day before St. Patricks Day itself, the 2014 theme is World Of Dance, so expect plenty of
Riverdance-style displays. It all kicks off at midday when the parade sets off from Piccadilly (map
C4/5) with bands, drummers, marvellous costumes, oats galore and more, plus throngs of
revellers enjoying the craic (thats party to those who dont speak Celtic). Afterwards you can
experience more Irish culture at the festival held in Trafalgar Square where youll nd live comedy
and lm tents, a music and dance stage, an Irish food market as well as arts and crafts stalls.
Trafalgar Square, WC2N 5DS. london.gov.uk/st-patricks-day. Charing Cross. Map C5/6.
This culturally important lm season centring
on BFI Southbank (p. 68) still manages to break
boundaries with screenings of the best queer
cinema from around the globe. Last years
hits included James Francos much discussed
Interior Leather Bar, as well as I Am Divine, a
documentary about John Waters drag superstar.
This months LLGFF offers galas, screenings,
erce parties, on-stage events, late bars, DJs
and more. The festival is also entwined with an
on-going retrospective of the iconic gay British
lmmaker Derek Jarman. Queer Pagan Punk
Jarman And The New Queer Cinema examines
his enduring legacy and cult hits like his Benjamin
Britten scored War Requiem (1989), which
starred Laurence Olivier in his last lm role, and

Pancake Day provides
a great excuse to indulge in a
plate or two, and explore some
other British favourites. English
pancakes are a type of crpe,
usually served quite simply,
with a squeeze of lemon and
a sprinkle of sugar. Londons
oldest pancake house, My Old
Dutch (p. 18), has been serving
them to locals and visitors
since 1958. The phrase my old
dutch (or duch) is actually east
Londons Cockney slang. Its
an affectionate term for a wife
or duchess (an extravagantly
dressed woman), immortalised
in the 1892 song, My Old
Dutch, by local music hall
legend Albert Chevalier.

The quintessential English

combination of sausages, eggs

complemented by rashers of
bacon and hot buttered toast,

regional variations? In Scotland
you might enjoy a slice of

brains), in Ireland with liver and
boxty (potato pancakes), and
in Wales a dollop of laverbread
(pureed seaweed fried in
oatmeal), a dish that Richard
Burton once described as
Welshmans caviar and is
an acquired taste. Meanwhile,
breakfasters in Devon and
Cornwall enjoy hogs pudding,
an eight-inch sausage made
from pigs heart, lungs and liver
stuffed into a delicious ox gut
casing. Tempted? For a Full
English Breakfast, great options
include Polo Bar Caf (p. 85),

This traditional English
dessert, consisting of a mixture
of strawberries, pieces of
meringue and cream, got its
name from the famous Eton
College in Berkshire, where it
has been served at its annual
cricket game against Harrow
School since the 19th century.
A popular myth is that the Eton
Mess was born when a dog
accidentally sat on a strawberry
pavlova, and the only way it
could be salvaged was to serve
it as a crushed meringue dessert.
Try it at The National Caf inside
The National Gallery (p. 56).

Winston Churchill called
the deep-fried British dish of
white sh in a crisp, golden
batter and crispy slices of
potato the good companions.
In fact, sh and chips are
not entirely the invention of
the British, with deep-fried
sh being introduced to
Britain in the 17th century by
Jewish refugees arriving from
Portugal and Spain. The chip,
meanwhile, can be traced back
to 17th-century Belgium and
France, but the combination
of the two was a British idea.
Many believe that sh and
1.2 billion a year is spent in sh
and chip shops across the UK.
The humble kipper (smoked herring)
was introduced to the English
breakfast table in 1842, when Queen
Victoria tried them during a visit to
Dalkeith in Scotland.

chips were sold by Jewish
immigrant, Joseph Malin,
in east London in 1860.
According to Professor John
Walton (author of Fish And
Chips And The British Working
Class), the dish kept spirits
up during World War II, as
ministers ensured it was never
rationed. Try it yourself at Mr
Fish (p. 87), The Seashell

Cornwalls national dish,
the Cornish pasty (a savoury pie
lled with minced beef, onion,
potato and swede) became
commonplace in the 16th-17th
centuries, when local tin miners
wives hit on the idea of wrapping
their husbands lunch in a baked
pastry case, shaped so it could
easily be held with one hand
and eaten on the job. Look out
for branches of British company
the Cornish Bakehouse and
its award-winning handmade
pasties straight from Cornwall,
on sale at outlets across the city
including on Oxford Street.

Bangers and Mash is a
quintessential British favourite,
a hearty serving of sausages
and creamy mashed potato,
smothered in onion gravy.
Though mostly associated
with World War II, as a cheap
and lling meal for the working
classes, it actually originates
as far back as 1912. The name
bangers derives from when
sausages were rationed during
the war; it was cheaper to make
them with a high water content,
so if cooked carelessly, they
were likely to explode under
the heat and cause a bang.
The comforting dish can be
found in most English pubs
and gastropubs, including
The Eagle (p. 88).

A brief history
Once an industrial area,
Camden Town is now one
of the most popular tourist
attractions in north London,
thanks to its famous markets,
Camden High Streets clothes
shops and its world-famous
arts venue the Roundhouse,
which this month is home to
CircusFest (p. 58). Bruce
Robinsons iconic British
lm Withnail And I (1987)
cemented Camdens fame as a
hub for British counter-culture.
Famous residents
Camden Town has attracted
a cross-section of literary
heavyweights over the
centuries including the likes of
Charles Dickens, author Beryl
Bainbridge and award-winning
playwright Alan Bennett. In
recent years, it has become
associated with singer Amy
Winehouse, who frequented
many of the pubs in the area.
You could visit the
Hawley Arms on
Castlehaven Road and raise a
glass to her memory. Camden
Town has been associated
with rock and pop for many
years as bands like Blur, The
Pogues and Madness all
formed, thanks to the areas
vibrant music scene.
Best for new bands
You can still discover new
bands and emerging talent
at many of its pubs, bars
and specialist music venues.
2
Start at The Bary, a well-
known venue showcasing
new indie, metal and rock acts.
This month catch Malicent
(7 Mar), Damn Dice (13 Mar)
and Bonade (18 Mar).
Great for big names
3
Another brilliant venue is
The Jazz Cafe, which has
built up a reputation for staging
the best in soul, jazz and R&B
over the years and features
many already famous names.
March highlights include
70s rock veterans Wishbone
Ash (2 Mar), 80s rapper
Grandmaster Flash (27-28
Mar) and Toyah (29 Mar).
Shopping

Camden Market is a
hotspot for the latest
trendy clothes, plus vintage
and alternative fashion
(punk, goth, rock). Its
actually a collection of
smaller markets, each with its
own avour. For instance, nd
antiques and food stalls at its
Stables Market area.
You can pick up a reasonably
priced lunch falafel, pizza,
Chinese, Indian and more.
Alternatively, nd local arts
and crafts at Camden Lock
Market, and other pockets
of market stalls right along
Camden High Street.
The canal
S
The Regents Canal, built
in the 19th century to
transport goods by boat, ows
through Camden. An amble
along its paths is a pleasant
way to spend the day. For
a different perspective on
Camden Town, stroll along
it to destinations such as
ZSL London Zoo (p. 32), and
Primrose Hill, with its great
panoramic views of the city.

Finally bursting out of teenage
bedrooms, comic books are now
very much in the mainstream.
Three of 2013s top 10 grossing
movies came from comic-book
characters (Iron Man, Superman
and Thor). But if you need
further evidence that comics
have well and truly come of age,
head to ExCeL London, where
more than 10,000 fans will
gather for the London Super
Comic Convention (15-16 Mar).
Pausing only to accept a free
hug in the hallway, you enter a
vast space packed with comics,
toys and merchandise. Wander
down Artist Alley, where you can
pick up original drawings or get
comics signed; or sit in on a
Q&A session with more than 30
top comic creators like Howard
Chaykin and Mark Buckingham.
But the undoubted highlight will
be the inaugural London Super
Cosplay Competition, judged by
make-up expert Riki LeCotey and
professional cosplayer Yaya Han.
When I started cosplaying,
says LeCotey, pinching herself
at how the movement has taken
off, aided by the Syfy docu-series
Heroes Of Cosplay, no famous
cosplayers were invited.
Though fans make their own
outts, the demented Jokers and
stern-faced Batman clones look
slick enough to have stepped
off the silver screen. Truly, the
geeks will inherit the earth.

We painters take the same
liberties as poets and madmen.
So said 16th-century
Renaissance painter Paolo
Veronese, in response to
early criticism that his works
were too opulent. Yet it was
this decorative style and
vibrant colouring (as above,
in The Conversion Of Mary
Magdalene) that became
his trademark.
The rst monographic show
of the artist ever to be held
in the United Kingdom, the
National Gallerys Veronese:
Magnicence In Renaissance
Venice (p. 56) displays 50
works, ranging from altarpieces
to allegorical paintings.
Born in Verona, Veronese
moved to Venice, where
he was trained by a local
craftsman. Initially inuenced
by the colouring used by Titian,
Veroneses earlier work was
reective of the Mannerism
movement, which focused
on intellectual sophistication
and the articial. He became
fascinated by the splendour
of 16th-century Venice, and
depicted incredible feasts,
lavish clothes, and scenes
of aristocratic life, culture,
fun and pleasure.
The breathtaking works on
display include Allegories Of
Love, a series of four paintings
each focusing on a different
theme unfaithfulness, scorn,
respect and happy union as
well as mythological paintings
of the 1560s and 1570s, which
he sold to international clients,
such as two paintings bought
for Philip IV by Velzquez.
Although successful during
his lifetime, Veroneses inuence
was not recognised until after
his death. But his legacy lives on
in the works of great artists such
as Peter Paul Rubens and
Giovanni Battista Tiepolo.
Director of the National
Gallery, Dr Nicholas Penny,
comments: From the deftly
captured shimmer of a pearl,
to the sweep and splendour
of his architectural settings,
Veroneses mastery of colour,
space and light, and his feeling
for beauty, for opulence and
grace, have captured the
imagination of countless artists
and art lovers ever since.

Iconic artist Richard Hamilton is considered the
founding father of the Pop Art movement that
took Britain (and later, America) by storm in

CircusFest is back with a
season of amazing contemporary
circus acts from around the
globe (26 Mar-27 Apr, p. 68).
For 2014, we have
programmed our biggest and
most diverse line-up yet, says
Leila Jones, the Roundhouses
Circus Producer (pictured).
Were hoping that presenting
experimental work alongside
the more accessible, she says,
will develop the UK audience.
Main Space highlights range
from the UK premiere of She
Would Walk The Sky (9-17 Apr)
by Company 2 (Cantina), to
artist Mark Storors Puffball
(pictured above, 22-27 Apr), with
its young lesbian, gay, bisexual
and transgender performers.
This month, visitors can catch
CircusFests launch and the UK
premiere of La Meute or The
Wolf Pack (from 26 Mar).
Performed by an all-male
collective of muscular French
acrobats called Compagnie La
Meute, it makes skilful use of
a rarely-seen apparatus, the
giant Russian Swing,
which propels the
performers perilously
into the air. All
throughout the festival
you can nd special
events in the
Roundhouses
Studio
Theatre, its
foyer and a special Pop-up Tent,
plus artist Bertil Nilssons photo
exhibition Luminescence.
Meanwhile youll also nd
performances at satellite venues
across the capital including
Shoreditch Town Hall. Keep
a look out, too, for fun activities
such as Take Part Weekend
(dates to be conrmed), when
11 to 25-year-olds are invited
to join workshops in aerial
skills, hula, street dance
and acrobatics.
When we started in 2007,
it was the rst UK circus
festival, Jones says.
Now we can say that
circus has well and
truly arrived.

dotty clairvoyant Madame Arcati on Broadway,

adding: It isnt! But you could say that. After

Robert Lindsay (pictured left, My Family) and
Rufus Hound (right, Never Mind The Buzzcocks)
star in the UK premiere of the 2004 slapstick
musical comedy Dirty Rotten Scoundrels at the
Savoy Theatre (from 10 Mar, p. 60). Based on
the 1988 Hollywood lm, which starred Steve
Martin and Michael Caine, it follows two
conmen, independently working the French
Riviera, who join forces for the scam of a
lifetime. Lyricist David Yazbeks songs are
both laugh-out-loud funny and heart-dancingly
tuneful, according to Hound, and the jokes
reworked to suit London theatregoers.
Pictured with her male co-stars is newcomer
Katherine Kingsley, who appeared last year
in Michael Grandages A Midsummer Nights
Dream, opposite David Walliams and Sheridan
Smith. Samantha Bond, Downton Abbeys
Lady Rosamund, has also joined the cast for
her rst musical role in 30 years.

Its been 19 months since the
2012 Olympic and Paralympic
Games, when awe-struck
cycling fans watched top
athletes race for victory at
the Velodrome in the Queen
Elizabeth Olympic Park. Now,
you can experience that kind
of excitement again during the
nal two days of the Revolution
Series 2013-14 on 14-15 Mar.
This prestigious cycling
event will see 150 of the worlds
elite riders competing at the
state-of-the-art Velodrome,
including Olympic stars Laura
Trott, Jason Kenny and Ed
Clancy. I cant wait to compete
at the Velodrome again, Trott
has said. The venue holds
special memories for me.
Racing in London will be
the perfect way to round off
the Revolution Series.
This competition takes place
on the 250-metre superfast
track, with an afternoon and
evening session each lasting
three hours, comprising both
endurance and sprint events.
If youd prefer to participate,
from 4 Mar youll be able
to try it for yourself. Taster
drop in sessions are available
to all ages, in the disciplines of
mountain, road and Velodrome
cycling, and you can hire your
own equipment. Have a go, you
could be the next Sir Chris Hoy.

Tea may be Britains favourite
beverage, but the past few
years have seen the streets of
London saturated with coffee
shops. The traditional afternoon
English tea experience (p. 90)
is as popular as ever, but nding
a decent cup on the go isnt
always that easy.
New tea bar Amanzi is among
the establishments determined
to change that. The American
brand recently opened its rst
London store. The agship
branch is based in Marylebone
with further shops expected
to follow across the city. An
interactive tea wall (pictured,
above), which is manned by
expert baristas, showcases
40 of Amanzis 150 delicious
blends of premium loose-leaf
tea. All the tea varieties are
represented, from black teas
such as the refreshing English
classic Earl Grey, through to
ultra healthy herbal, white,
green and oolong varieties.
The baristas will help you
choose the perfect combination
of avour, caffeine level and
health benets, which are said
to include everything from
stress-relieving properties
to detoxing and diet-assisting
metabolism boosters. At Amanzi
you can even sample new
avours at the tea bar before
you buy a tin to take home with
you. Open Mon-Fri 8am-7pm;
Sat-Sun 10am-6pm. 24 New

Fancy a full English breakfast
with a glass of champagne at
3am; or perhaps a salt beef
sandwich with homemade apple
crumble and an English craft
beer in the afternoon? The
tiny Polo Bar Caf, opposite
Liverpool Street station, is a
rarity in London: an unfussy
venue serving food and drink
24 hours-a-day. This month,
the caf expands upwards,
with the buildings rst oor
opening to diners good news
for locals who pack inside at all
hours of the day and night.
What I love about this venue
is that it attracts such a cross-
section of people, from cleaners
nishing their morning shift to
bankers coming in for lunch, to
restaurant staff dropping in after
work at 2am for a drink, says its
owner, Philip Inzani, whos been
in the catering business for
20 years. He bought the Grade
II-listed venue in 2012 and has
renovated the interior. It now
features open brickwork walls,
wooden tables and is decorated
with vintage ephemera.
Its not just the dcor that had
an upgrade when Inzani took
over; the food did too. Its 85%
pork, home-cured sausages are
one reason to visit. I wanted to
serve only top-quality homemade
English dishes, all prepared
on site. Just because its
a fried breakfast, he says,
doesnt mean that quality
should be compromised.

The refurbishment of Tate Britains Rex
Whistler Restaurant was part of its recent
45m redevelopment (p. 57). The art
gallerys restaurant is so named because it
boasts an enormous mural by the legendary
artist himself. Commissioned in 1927, it was
painted by Whistler when he was a student
at Londons Slade School of Art.
Newly restored, its never looked better, so
its incredible to think that a 1928 ood saw
it submerged under two feet of Thames water.
The restaurants new menu draws on
its heritage for inspiration and head chef
Nathan Brewster has collaborated with
a food historian to serve foods that were
popular with past diners, such as globe
artichokes (a favourite of middle-class
Georgian Londoners in the late 1820s
and 1830s), and World War II favourite
smoked goose, which featured in the 1940
cookery book They Cant Ration These.
The restaurant has an award-winning
wine cellar, while its white linen tablecloths
and superb service add to the understated
elegance. A perfect venue not just for lunch,
but also for the newly added breakfast and
afternoon tea. The restaurant is open daily
for lunch noon-3pm; Fri-Sat 10am-6.30pm.

Welcome to the
house of fun
The nightclub Mason House
burst onto Londons nightlife
scene in January and is notable
because it boasts Sir Andrew
Lloyd Webber as its landlord
and lies in the vaults underneath
the famous London Palladium
(Webbers own theatre). Once
a 19th-century Masonic temple
where Londons Freemasons
gathered, its new incarnation
effortlessly blends the
historic, cultural and blindingly
hedonistic all in one, from the
stripped-back raw brick walls
to the chequered mosaic dance
oor (a Masonic motif).
The venue has been a
waxworks museum, roller disco
and, most recently, the boutique
nightclub Movida. Today, it once
again has a worshipful Masonic
ambience with candelabras
illuminating portraits of austere-
looking 19th-century gentlemen.
Yet theres more to Mason
House than its venerable
grandeur, as co-owner Eamonn
Mulholland explains: Its a three-
in-one venue. We have a top
DJ in the main club area, more
ambient sounds in the exclusive
Room 33, and in a couple of
months, a separate bar which
will be open from early evening.
Although its ofcially a
members-only club, if you
turn up looking smart before
midnight, theres a good
chance youll get in.

BEYOND LONDON
Day trips and short breaks around Britain. By Jo Caird
York
Take a stroll through the adorable medieval
streets of York this month and youre likely to
spot some famous faces. Ground-breaking
feminist writer Germaine Greer and former
Poet Laureate Andrew Motion (pictured,
right) are just two of the great writers who
will be in town for the York Literature Festival
(20-21 Mar), now in its seventh year. The
event also welcomes leading politicians,
broadcasters and scientists.
The written and spoken word is being
celebrated in venues small and large across
the city, including York Art Gallery, York
Theatre Royal and The Bar Convent, the oldest
building of its kind in England. Attending one
of the many author readings, workshops and
