Gallery Proposal

Emma Timmins

James doesnt exactly accept
proposals. He chooses to exhibit
someone if he likes them and their
work. He usually exchanged emails to
determine weather he is interested in
showing their work or not.

The gallerists want to know what the
artist is like through their proposal

He doesnt expect emerging artists
work to be exceptional, he just wants
to see potential and attention to
detail

He believes that his gallery is
completely different to others due to
the fact he is a photographer himself
and he has seen it all.

Toi Ponke Gallery & my work
There are 2 options each year to submit proposals to exhibit/
beginning of next year
The gallery exhibits work by solo artists, groups and curators.
Priority given to Wellington-based artists who are in the early
stages of their career and demonstrate a high standard of
technical ability and presentation.

I chose to apply to this gallery because it caters to myself and my
photographic style. The gallery is achievable for me because it supports
emerging, young and wellington students such as myself. The gallery exhibits
many styles of art including photography, art, sculpture, installations etc. This
challenges me to a establish and convey a stronger and unique theme or a
different take/ perspective on my subject matter to separate me from the
broad competition.

Tomaas
Tomaas has worked as inspiration for me due to his subject matters. The use of a
model and its relationship to the material of bubble wrap lead me to the subject
matter of humans interaction with pollution.

Tomaas images
are fashion
based, I want to
steer away from
this in my
images and
approach it
from an
abstracted
direction and
literally
conveying how
humans eyes
are blurred
towards this
issue
I was convinced
that my images
would be taken in a
natural
environment with
natural lighting ect,
but after being
inspired by Tomaas
work, I am
definitely going to
trial in the studio.
Tomaas works have
created moody,
ghost like emotions
and this should be
taken advantage of
Shaun Matthews- Lest We Go Ashore
An imagined memory of Aotearoas once isolated forests, 70 million years in the making.
His exhibition featured 25
images similar to the left.

The images were pinned
prints surrounded by
white semi circle
backgrounds. They were
relatively small hence the
large number of them.

There was a nature
soundtrack playing
constantly when in the
exhibition to heighten
senses and the impact.
Visiting this gallery impacted my own exhibiton as it gave me an idea for the diversity,
standards and opportunities of Toi Poneke Gallery It also gave me an overall feel for
the space and helped me to imagine what I can bring to it.
Nigel Tomm
Nigel Tomm works with techniques that I wish to take inspiration from such as;

Distortion
Physical manipulation
Filter effect
Different perspective on portraiture
My Proposal will include

An explanation of my exhibition concept
Underlying theme
What informed this work
What it represents
Are the works cohesive?

development process)
An explanation of why I want to exhibit at Toi Ponke
Gallery and why is it relevant to my work?
Plans on how I will use the gallery space
Intended pricing of work if desired
Preferred dates for exhibiting

Due to Toi Ponke prioritizing Wellington artist, I want to give back by
addressing a wellington matter in my exhibition series
The Wellington town belt is decreasing in size by the year. This is the
harsh reality to a number of causes and threats to its sustainability.
One of these main threats (following land development, pests etc.) is
pollution of the belt caused by human impact in particularly waste
dumping. I will create and exhibition to open the communities eyes
by literally blurring their vision and obscuring the view, in an attempt
for the viewer to re focus. This interaction will hopefully gain the
attention of the public and raise awareness towards Wellingtons
town belt and its decreasing size. I want to develop from this idea
and use this opportunity to respond to the matter of Water pollution
as well as Air Pollution in Wellington also.
In a creative yet daunting way this will hopefully impact the viewer
and create an uncanny feeling or guilty subconscious.
In order to achieve this, I will use a model to blatantly address the
relationship between humans and the environment and our impact
causing pollution.
