JOHNNY GUITAR

THE CONGRESS (2014)

More than two decades after catapulting to stardom with THE
PRINCESS BRIDE, an aging actress (Robin Wright, playing a
version of herself ) decides to take her fnal job: preserving her
digital likeness for a future Hollywood. Trough a deal brokered
by her loyal, longtime agent (Harvey Keitel) and the head of
Miramount Studios (Danny Huston), her alias will be con-
trolled by the studio, and will star in any flm they want with no
restrictions. In return, she receives healthy compensation so she
can care for her ailing son and her digitized character will stay
forever young.
Twenty years later, under the creative vision of the studios head
animator (Jon Hamm), Wrights digital double rises to immortal
stardom. With her contract expiring, she is invited to take
part in Te Congress convention as she makes her comeback
straight into the world of future fantasy cinema.
Hudson Horror Show: TOURIST TRAP and
TOMBS OF THE BLIND DEAD
Were teaming up with Hudson Horror Show for a 35mm double
feature of epic proportions!
Name me one horror classic with a guy in drag? OK forget
Psycho, if you can name two movies with a deranged maniac
dressed up like a lady, well, the other one has go to be 1979s
TOURIST TRAP! Tis is one of the most unsettling and
unique horror movies from the late 70s and early 80s. Not
quite a slasher movie, yet you still get beautiful teenagers that
are isolated and stalked one by one, plus creepy wax manne-
quins, kinetic super powers, and well, cross dressing!
Te companion to this movie is the one and only, the Templar
Knights zombie classic, TOMBS OF THE BLIND DEAD!
Directed by Amando de Ossorio, this tale of blinded knights
coming back from the dead for revenge as horseback riding
zombies (on zombie horses no less) spawned three sequels as
well as infuenced legendary flm makers like Jess Franco and
John Carpenter. While they dont eat your brains or move very
fast, the Blind Dead carry sharp swords and well, possess super
hearing! Tese undead knights listen for your heartbeat, so the
harder your heart beats, the quicker they will fnd you.
Double Feature:
THE GODFATHER I & II
See both flms in the epic crime saga back-to-back!
One of the most loved, acclaimed and popular flms of all-time
THE GODFATHER feels just as fresh and groundbreaking
today as it did in 1972. It made Al Pacino a star, it cemented
Marlon Brando as the acting force of his generation and shed
light on the unique and overfowing talent of Coppola. Over
the years the flm is mostly known in pop culture for Brandos
pufy cheeks and the immense bloodshed throughout (includ-
ing that infamous horses head).
A completely diferent flm from its predecessor in terms of nar-
rative structure and tone THE GODFATHER, PART II fulflls
the clich of being a sequel that delivers and, in some ways,
surpassing the original. In the present much of the flms focus
is on the FBI investigation of the mob in New York, predomi-
nantly the sects lead by Michael Corleone (Al Pacino). In the
past the flm tells the story of a young Vito Corleone (Robert
De Niro). Tese time framing devices make the flms 3-plus
hour runtime fy by and the Vito story gives deep emotional
context and resonance not only to this flm, but the THE
GODFATHER as well. Coppola parallels the life and transfor-
mation of Michael Corleone to that of his father.

Double Feature:
THE GODFATHER I & II
AGFA Presents: GET ROLLIN (1980, 35mm)
Introduced by Temple of Schlocks Chris Poggiali
While two major studios were locked in a heated battle over
which would be the frst to release the ultimate roller disco
movie of 1979, indie flmmaker J. Terrance Mitchell got right
to the heart of the phenomenon by focusing on three of the
most colorful and skilled skaters at Brooklyns legendary Empire
Rollerdrome. Packed with disco hits by such performers as
Shalamar, Rick James, A Taste of Honey, and Grace Jones,
Mitchells fast, fun and family-friendly semi-documentary
emerges from 30-plus years of near total obscurity for this rare
35mm screening.
THE BIG QUIZ THING:
MULTIMEDIA MOVIE TRIVIA (2013)
Straight from the hit game show on the NYC Life network,
the Big Quiz TingNew Yorks greatest live trivia experi-
encepresents an evening of multimedia movie trivia to the
Alamo Drafthouse. Te star of the TV show, Quizmaster Noah
Tarnow, welcomes audience volunteers to take turns playing a
game-show-style quiz (complete with buzzers), featuring the
BQTs unique brand of movie-themed trivia.
DR. JEKYLL AND MR HYDE
with live score by Reel Orchestrette (1920)
Reel Orchestrette, with Bradford Reed on pencilina, drums, keys
& Geof Gersh on guitar, will perform a live original score for this
1920 silent flm starring John Barrymore
Te contrast of Dr. Jekyll, a prim and proper scientist, to Mr.
Hyde, a wild-eyed maniac, is impressive. Furthering the dark
and light sides of the soul we have two women, one considered
virtuous, the other a tawdry cabaret performer. Tis adaptation
by John S. Robertson has impressively gloomy sets and creates
an atmosphere that almost a century later remains unsettling.
Fangoria Presents: THE HUNGER (1983, 35mm)
Gorgeous, gory and ultra-80s in every respect this movie turns
out to be as steamy as it is scary. You get everything from a
Bowie tryst in a spacious shower to the celebrated couplings of
Sarandon and Deneuve. Scott utilizes his stars to memorable
efect, as Deneuve and Bowies cool, otherworldly style contrasts
tantalizingly with Sarandons delicacy. Forget Edward and Bella
-- this is what real supernatural sensuality is all about
Video Vortex: FURIOUS (1970)
Join hosts Matt Desiderio (Horror Boobs) and Mike Hunchback
(Seminal Psychosis) for your monthly dose of VHS only insanity.
Bring your VHS tapes - well be set up to trade and sell some great
stuf!
Tis is a movie with 10,000 ideas but zero story; impossible
ambition coupled with the desire to alienate anyone watching.
Filming a feature on 35mm is expensive, and so is interdi-
mensional travel, or a giant, fre-breathing dragon with entire
human skeletons between its teeth. But FURIOUS laughs of
these challenges. Money is no object when reality is no option.
Te only remaining explanation is that it sprang fully formed
from some spiritual and intellectual void, a starving chasm of
chaotic darkness that feeds of the shock and confusion of hu-
man viewers. So feed it.
DURAN DURAN UNSTAGED (2012)
Experience Duran Duran in a one-time concert presentation
directed by David Lynch!
Directed with a kinetic visual intensity that makes it easily
recognizable as a David Lynch creation, DURAN DURAN
UNSTAGED is quite unlike any concert-doc experience ever
put on screen. Its a dream collaboration that presents the bands
energy and Lynchs playful interventions on the grand scale they
so uniquely merit.
Duran Duran performs 18 songs, including Hungry Like the
Wolf, A View to Kill, Ordinary World and Rio. Also
appearing are Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance, Te Gos-
sips Beth Ditto, Mark Ronson and Kelis.
GOD HELP THE GIRL (2014)
Writer/director Stuart Murdoch creates a poignant coming-of-
age story that doubles as a sublime indie-pop musical from one
of indie pops biggest songwriters. Te project began as a suite
of songs, written while Murdoch was in between records and
tours as lead singer of Belle and Sebastian. He nurtured it for
nearly a decade into a fully formed flm, set in the bohemian
fantasia of Glasgows West End, which is populated by mods,
rockers, and emo kids who have no qualms about breaking into
song and dance.
Staff Picks: MATILDA (1996)
A grouchy couple are parents to a very sweet girl, Matilda.
Unlike her bratty brother and mean parents, Matilda becomes a
very sweet and extremely intelligent 6 year old girl, who is very
keen to go to school and read books. After a while, her parents
send her to school with the worst principal in the world, a very
sweet teacher, and good friends. While trying to put up with
her parents and principals cruelty, she starts to unwittingly
unleash telekinetic powers, destroying a television and making
a newt fy onto the principal. With enough practice, Matilda
starts to learn to control her telekinetic powers and soon us-
ing them on her principal so she can drive her away from the
school. Based on the beloved novel by Roald Dahl.
SUPER HAPPY FUN MONKEY BASH (2013)
For too long the screens of the Alamo Drafthouse have been
without the inefable delights of Japanese men putting on
strange costumes and getting injured in the name of entertain-
ment. Te wait is over. Prepare for the imminent return of
the one and only SUPER HAPPY FUN MONKEY BASH! A
long running Alamo Drafthouse tradition, this is a 90 minute
compilation of mind-boggling insanity from Japanese television.
Featuring bawdy situation comedies, extreme sports mishaps,
incomprehensible commercials for totally bizarre products,
nonsensical English phrases, humiliating game shows, mind-
boggling political incorrectness, poorly-timed nudity, foam rub-
ber costumes, A-list American celebrities pimping themselves
out for cheap Japanese products, and every type of supreme
goofness imaginable.
BACK TO THE FUTURE (1985)
Almost 30 years ago, Michael J. Fox & Christopher Lloyd
took us on an era-hopping adventure as the 80s raddest time
travelin teen and his unlikely sidekick - a crazy, wild-eyed, wild-
haired scientist. What rose from those fame trails is the heaviest
sci-f comedy ever made - one that is often considered the
perfect movie without hyperbole. (Find someone who doesnt
love this movie and Ill show you a slacker!)
CLERKS (1994)
One of the many charms of Kevin Smiths CLERKS is that it
clocks a full day on the job. Its hero, Dante Hicks, is a clerk in a
convenience store, and his friend Randal works next door in the
video store. Both stores are in a strip mall in Asbury Park, N.J.
- marginal operations with ill-paid and disenchanted employees.
Te movie has the attitude of a gas station attendant who tells
you to check your own oil. Its grungy and unkempt, and Dante
and Randal look like they have been nourished from birth on
beef jerky and Cheetos. Tey are tired and bored, underpaid
and unlucky in love, and their encounters with customers feel
like a series of psychological tests.
Girlie Night:
CLUELESS QUOTE-ALONG (1995)
Tis flm spawned fashion trends, countless slang terms (AS IF!)
and gave Alicia Silverstone a reason to exist beyond Aerosmith
videos. Now, thanks to the subtitling magic of the Action Pack,
we can say all of our favorite lines together during the flm, plus
there will be props to help us pretend that, for one glorious
night, were the Class of 95 at Bronson Alcott High School.
Well play matchmaker for sweet old teachers, make a cameo
at the Val party and thank an LA city bus driver for taking a
chance on an unknown kid. You dont want to miss it, so slip
on your Calvin Klein dress and make time in your busy pants-
dropping schedule to attend.
GREASE SING-ALONG (1978)
Tis flm adaptation of the 1971 musical is a pure dose of
happy, a celebration of youth the way we prefer to remember
it. Its got the school dance to end all school dances, the school
carnival to end all school carnivals, the teen romance to end all
teen romances. Its impossible not to sing along with this movie,
which is why were screening the flm with all of the lyrics
subtitled. As you sing about the risks of being a beauty school
dropout or, oh, those summer nights, youll also have props
themed to the show so you get the full interactive experience.
JAWS (1975)
A shark is prowling the waters of Amity Island and it is up to
police chief Martin Brody to hunt down and kill this deadly
predator. What more is there to say about this American clas-
sic? It has everything you look for in a movie - kids in peril,
drunken sea shanties and Richard Dreyfuss in a cage. If all
that wasnt enough - how about this? Tanks to the 4K digital
restoration of the flm, youll see and hear this movie like never
before just dont blame us when you develop trepidations
about a trip to the beach this summer.
JOHNNY GUITAR (1954)
An of-kilter but intriguingly sensational western about a
saloon-madam Vienna (Joan Crawford) who learns that her
wealth and power cant buy everything as a town full of jealous
landowners try to overrun her property. Te eponymous male
(Sterling Hayden) of Rays western gender and genre-bender
is the flms object of desire; a trophy cowboy returned, feuded
over by the two women who wear the pants in this wild west
town: Joan Crawford and the sexually frustrated rancher Emma
McCall (Mercedes McCambridge). Nicholas Rays1954 mas-
terpiece is one of the all-time left-feld wonders of the studio
system, a flm so subversive its a wonder it ever got made.
JURASSIC PARK (1993)
Almost 20 years after it frst blew the minds of audiences Steven
Spielbergs JURASSIC PARK still remains one of the most
awe-inspiring flms from the cinematic king of inspiring awe.
At the time the flms CGI was the most realistic and amazing
moviegoers had ever seen, yet what makes the flm still hold up
to todays lofty technological standards was the combination of
CGI with animatronics. Te result is a flm that feels nostalgic
without looking dated. Te story, part sci-f, part horror, part
action, is pure Spielberg. It also has one of the best and most
underrated scores the great John Williams ever composed and
a cast that features the unlikely combination of Sam Neill, Jef
Goldblum, Laura Dern, Samuel L. Jackson and (Sir) Richard
Attenborough.
PEE-WEES BIG ADVENTURE (1985, 35mm)
I know youre excited for this screening but what am I?! Join us
for one of the most irresistibly charming flms from the 80s.
Paul Reubens is Pee-Wee Herman, the eccentric man-child in
search of his bike. From the basement of the Alamo to the ghost
truck of Large Marge, Pee Wee is on a cross-country adventure
and you are invited to join him! Organized bike rides to the
theater are strongly encouraged for this show!
ROBOCOP (1987)
Te Detroit of the future is riddled with crime and poverty (in
the future, right?), and Omni Consumer Products has just an-
nounced that theyve purchased the Detroit PD. Alex Murphy
roams the streets as a tough-as-nails cop ready to serve and
protect until he fnds himself on the wrong end of a shotgun
party. OCP owns Murphys corpse and decides to take whats
left of him to create their crime fghter of the future: ROBO-
COP. What follows is one of the greatest action/social-satire/
all-around badass movies Ive ever seen.
SINGIN IN THE RAIN (1952)
Gene Kelly is Don Lockwood, star of the silent flm era at the
dawn of the talkies. His longtime screen partner, Lena Lamont,
smolders on the screen but is the nails on the chalkboard of
Lockwoods life. As an accomplished song and dance man,
Lockwood is set to transition into the era of sound, but Lena
couldnt hit a note with a shotgun at close range. Leave it to
aspiring actress Kathy Selden (the spectacularly adorable Debbie
Reynolds) to dub over for Lena in the pictures...and in Dons
heart.
