Welcome to the Summer Edition of Out and About
A Rathmines Pembroke Community Partnership (RPCP) publication
providing information to older people in Dublin 4, 6, 6W and 12.
Making Crumlin a Great Place to Grow Old In
Crumlin was chosen as one of eight towns
in Ireland to become an Age Friendly town.
Over the coming months a town planner will
be engaging and consulting with the local
community as part of the Age Friendly Town
Initiative. The aim is to greatly improve the
quality of life of older adults living in Crumlin
and to get them involved in shaping their
own communities. The process will involve
listening to older people and those that work
with older people, proling the local area,
helping to develop Age Friendly Town Plans
and then to involve older people, like you,
in bringing about the changes needed. This
is a follow on to Dublin an Age Friendly City
which some of you may have been involved in
and they will be sure to use information from
consultations that have already taken place
in Dublin 12. This is a follow on to Dublin: An
Age Friendly City.
Keep your eye out for a series of get-
togethers that will be taking place within
Crumlin over the coming weeks. Take the
opportunity to tell Age Friendly what it is like
to be an older person living in Crumlin and to
give your thoughts on what would make it a
better place for older people to live in. These
thoughts and ideas will help to shape a plan
which aims to make the area a more Age
Friendly Place to live.
Age Friendly Regional Development
Consultant, Pat Doherty said: We will be
spending the coming number of months
engaging with and listening to older
people across Crumlin. We want to know
what matters to the older members of
our communities on issues such as public
transport, access to quality healthcare,
opportunities to socialise and stay
connected and public spaces where they
can walk and talk and feel safe. This
initiative is an important step in helping to
develop a blueprint for how we will plan
and develop our City in the coming years to
ensure that it is a truly great place in which
to grow old.

Ireland and the Age Friendly Towns Initiative,

Five Tips for Maintaining Your Mental Well-Being
Evidence suggests
there are ve steps we
can all take to improve
our mental wellbeing. If
you approach them with
an open mind and try
them out, you can judge
the results yourself.
Connect connect with
the people around you:
your family, friends and/
or neighbours. Spend
time developing these
relationships.
Be active you dont
have to go to the gym.
Take a walk, dance or do
some exercises in your
chair. Find the activity
that you enjoy and make
it a part of your life.
Keep learning learning
new skills can give you
a sense of achievement
and a new condence.
So why not sign up for
that computer course,
start learning to play a
musical instrument or a
new card game or watch
a documentary?
Give to others even
the smallest act can
count, whether its a
smile, a thank you or a
kind word. Larger acts,
such as volunteering at
your local community
centre, can improve your
mental wellbeing and
help you build new social
networks.
Take notice be more
aware of the present
moment, including your
feelings and thoughts,
your body and the world
around you. Some people
call this awareness
mindfulness and it can
positively change the
way you feel about life
and how you approach
challenges.
Launch of the Dublin 12 Gold Star Initiative
The Dublin 12 Gold Star
Initiative was launched in
St Agnes Parish Centre,
Crumlin on the 17th June.
The aim here is to encourage
local businesses, public
buildings and community
centres to become more
accessible and inclusive for
people with disabilities.
Bronze, Silver and Gold
Stars will be awarded to
participating organisations
& businesses for their levels
of Access and Disability
Awareness. The model
being used here is being
adapted from the Cashel
Gold Star Group, which has
worked successfully since
2006.
The aim of this launch
was to form a new Dublin
12 Gold Star steering group
to oversee the work of this
project. This newly formed
group will meet every six
weeks, starting from July
22nd.
Kathleen Dundon &
Joanne Higgins, two locally
based people involved with
this initiative, believe that
not only would the Dublin 12
Gold Star encourage more
people with disabilities to
contribute to local business
and the community, it would
also be great way for the
Dublin 12 area get some
welcome positive attention.

Walkinstowns Golden Years Club
This club started 14 years ago. It was
suggested by WSAF member Joe Ryan, the
idea being to provide a social outlet for the
number of elderly people living in the area,
especially people living alone.
This has proved a great success. The
meetings take place on the rst Thursday
of every month 2.30 - 4.30pm in WSAF
Community Hall, Moeran Road.
Although we only meet once a month,
always providing a social afternoon, we
arrange several holidays, special events, day
trips, theatre and a very enjoyable Christmas
Party. See the photo of some of our
members taken on a recent holiday on the
Aran Islands, Galway.
We also have a very social Art Class
meeting every Tuesday morning 11am 1pm.
New members are always welcome,
especially men.
If you are interested in getting involved
or would like some more information
please contact Celia Smyth, Secretary on
01-4553715.
