Appendix A: Consonant Pairs Appendix A: Consonant Pairs Appendix A: Consonant Pairs Appendix A: Consonant Pairs
In the following section, you can learn almost 275 Hebrew words for
half the cognitive cost. That is, by learning either the verbal concept or
the noun concept you will be able to decode both.
The words pen and pencil name writing utensils. If I say that I
penned a letter or penciled in notes, you know what I am talking about
even though the verb forms are seldom used. We could reverse the
thought process to decode the word writer from the verb write. The
same basic conceptual-linguistic building blocks apply in Hebrew.
The list below is arranged with the verbal concepts in the left
column. (Hebrew sentences generally start with a verb.) The right
column holds the concept(s) commonly derived from the verb. By
changing the pronunciation (which the vowel pointing represents) the
meaning changes though the core consonants remain.
The nouns in Hebrew derive from the verb in the following ways:
1

1. By a vowel change.
For example, (tread) and (way, road)
Notice the A-class vowel pointing of the verbs in the left
column, and the predominantly I-class (i & e) pointing of the
nouns in the right column.
2. By dropping a root letter.
For example, (decree) and (rule)
3. By adding one or more of the following functional letters
including (called Heemantive in some old
grammars). The examples here abound such as (Hi-believe
in) and (faithfulness).

1
After seeing the pattern while assembling the list below, I stumbled upon this
framework in James Seixas, Manual Hebrew Grammar for the Use of Beginners
(Andover: Flagg, Gould, and Newman, 1833), 9.
Hebrew Verse-Based Vocabulary Reader 137
The functional letters including (called Heemantive in
some old grammars) are often added in the following ways:
at the end of a word
at the beginning of a word
at the beginning or end of a word
inserted into the letters of the word.
The words below bear out the pattern of the addition of functional letters,
so you will learn to spot them and determine meaning of the vocabulary
term from the root letters. Two for the cognitive price of one!
Vocabulary not only facilitates reading, vocabulary gives us valuable
information about the experiences recorded in the text. As you memorize
the word forms below, you are gaining insight into the Hebrew world.
Look at all of the concepts from the word , for example.
The list is intended to be used as a learning aid. Most of the words
that appear below are cognates. Some simply share similar letters and
concepts. The cognates I verified using the The Enhanced Brown-Driver-
Briggs Hebrew and English Lexicon.
