Mystery Night
A Irish Shindig
Meeting 807 28 August 2014

Weekly Headlines
An Irish Shindig
As part of the program of having a mystery night each
month, last Thursday Jerrabomberra Rotarians turned up to
a green room, decorated with streamers, balloons, place
mats and party goody bags for all. Yes the Club Service
Committee had been at it again and as a follow up to the
excellent Christmas in July mystery night, members enjoyed
an August Irish Shindig. The local general store also made a
special effort with Beef and Guinness Pie, potatoes and
cabbage for main and a special Baileys Irish Mousse for
dessert. (Read more on Page 2)
Felix is coming back again
Most members will recall the visit of Felix from St Jude School in Tanzania last
October, when we arranged for him to present in the School Hall. That was Felixs
first international trip outside of Tanzania. Now he is a seasoned traveller, and
having attended and spoken at the RI Convention in Sydney in June, he is returning
to visit Canberra in October this year. On this occasion Felix is being hosted by
Canberra City Rotary. You are invited to attend if you would like to hear a progress
update, or just simply catch up with Felix. Date 14 October 2014, 7.15pm for
prompt start at 7.30pm, First Floor, Novotel Hotel, Northbourne Avenue.
(See email circulated to all from Glenn for additional details).
Hannah Update
Hannah is now well settled at school and has been on her first
school excursion to Homebush and had a weekend away at Tuross
Heads as part of the Youth Exchange Program (YEP) induction
process. Peter and Sue J took Hannah down to Tuross Heads and
participated in some of the formalities. Among the highlights of
the weekend for Hannah, was that she was able to hold and
cuddle a baby wombat. This is quite rare and was only possible
because one of the other host families is involved in Wildlife Rescue and happened to have a baby
wombat under care.
A second highlight was that Hannah took the plunge into the sea with 4 other brave students. Hannah is
reported to have commented that the water was warm! (Maybe to Hannah, but not to us). This week
Hannah missed the meeting due to her having a head cold, but Paul and Sue popped round on Friday and
delivered a care package of a magazine, a packet of Tim Tams and some Rocklea Road. She seemed to
cheer up quite a bit.

How time flies. Two months
into the year already and the
ninth issue of the Jerraganda
ready to go to press.
This week we report on our
second monthly mystery
night which was quite an
affair. (See page 2).
Also we have news of Felix
returning to our shores to tell
us more about the great story
of St Jude School (page 1),
and of couse we have a brief
update on Hannahs
adventure (page 7).
Business reports were short,
but we do have a Treasurer
back on board, so no doubt
we will be treated to some
number reporting soon.
There is also the usual
Market report (page 5), and a
short highlight of the clubs
attendance at the School
Trivia Night (page 5) and of
course a weekly recipe (page
7).
Enjoy the read.

An Irish Shindig

Our very own mistress of fun took charge of our mystery night an Irish Shindig,
suitably decked out in some tasteful green shamrocks and tinsel. The evening had
been planned as a bit of a farewell party for our very own Leprechaun Marie-
Claire, but unfortunately at the last minute M-C was unable to join us. While our
thoughts were with M-C and Eugene, we still went ahead and had a good old
shindig in their absence.
To start off Glenda provided some interesting facts about Ireland accompanied by a map just to make sure
we all knew where it was and what the green island looks like.
We were then treated to some very funny YouTube videos; one of which revealed the origins of Irish dancing having something
to do with a poor Irish lad waiting to get into an outside dunny to take care of some urgent business. After a round of Irish
jokes (some actually quite funny) the real fun started when Glenda invited a few members to step up and show their Irish
dancing skills. The accompanying photos highlight the competitive nature of the dancing competition that followed, with the
winner being decided more on fitness and endurance than any type of dancing skill.
The five dancers took their positions on the floor.
Anton decided a couple of balloons might help him.
He placed one between his legs? And hid the other
one can you find it? Paul also had a balloon, but
his was much smaller. After a small technical hitch
with the music, things got moving with a variety of
interpretations of dancing being displayed.

As dancers retired from the intense competition (they basically ran out of steam) there were two dancers left and on a fitness
scale the result was pretty predictable.

What about this

I can do better

Presidents Report
President Paul welcomed treasurer Jon back from his holiday overseas and also
welcomed Jon to his seat at the top table, where Jon became one of the three wise
men for the first time this Rotary year. (See picture right). President Paul also
mentioned how the clubs thoughts and prayers remain with Matthew, and David
and Anne, as he continues to make progress in his recovery. Also our thoughts are
with Marie-Claire and Eugene regarding the hospitalisation of Eugenes Mum, and
with Hannah who is not feeling too good at present with a head cold.
President Paul felt he would leave other business reports to the various directors.
Secretarys Report
Glenn advised that the club had received a thank you card from Robert and his family for the flowers and card that we sent on
the passing of his Mum. Glenn circulated the card.
Treasurers Report
Jon reported that he was pleased to be back and was slowly settling into the treasurers role. He is hoping to have a handover
from David B within the next week or so. He also thanked the members who had been covering the treasurers duties while he
had been away and David had been focusing on Matthews recovery. Jon also mentioned that once on top of the books he will
report a little differently than the last treasurer, with a focus on less information more frequently.
International
Chilly was not present. In his absence the President noted that all was on track for the RAWCS trip
departing 22 September. Pam also mentioned that the RAWCS volunteers are getting together at
Chillys place on 3 September for a pre-project briefing. The polo shirts for the project have been
ordered and Pam thanked PP Paul for his help is updating the Polo shirt logo.

photos page 7).

Club Service
Mez advised that on his return from Canada, Colin hopes to be able to do the Trailer refurb. He will advise if he needs any help.
Mez also advised that following Board approval, we are purchasing a professional display stand to enable us to do better
promotions of Rotary and what we do. To help offset some of this cost, Mez will be applying to District for a grant of $500,
which DG Rowley advised was available for such purchases/activities.
Mez also advised that she and Sue R are developing a new membership kit for new members.
General Business:
Fernridge Rotary, USA. Bruce, who was very pleased to be back amongst the
Jerrabomberra community after his and Lizs two month holiday in the States, was
equally pleased to present President Paul with a banner form the Rotary club of
Fernridge, USA. Bruce and Liz attended a meeting of this club while they were on their
travels.
Market Master:
Anton advised that Tam (Market Manager) has advised the temporary traffic arrangements at the markets are
likely to be needed for a bit longer (past the end of August as originally advised). This will mean we will need to
look at providing the 4
th
person for a while longer. Members felt this ongoing temporary arrangement was
proving to be difficult to man, and made a few suggestions for Anton to discuss with Hall club and Tamara.

Joker
After a two week absence the joker was back. Our guest Liz drew ticket Black 77, and the holder of the winning
ticket, Mez, drew out the 4 of spades; leaving the joker to live on for another day. The joker is now worth
$96.00

SGT Fines:
PP Paul was the evenings fines master and was able to draw on quite a few indescretions of the past 2
weeks to ably extract $112.80 from those in attendance. The generosity of Bruce and Chris were duly noted
in helping this total become so healthy.

Attendance:
The attendance officer felt the business was taking too long and we needed to get on with the Irish Shindig. As such Mez felt
that regardless of the attendance figure, the President should still shout Baileys, as it was after all an Irish Night!
(Attendance was later advsied as 81%).

Spotted at the sink
this week were Bruce,
Glenda and Ian.
Well done Bruce, first week
back and straight into the
clean up duties.

Jerrabomberra Public School Trivia Night
A few members (Pres Paul, PP Paul and Sue, Glenn and Glenda, Mez and Jan)
represented the club as a team at the Schools Trivia night on Saturday 30 August.
The event was well attended as in past years as one of the main annual fund
raisers for the P&C at the school. We put on a good show and finished mid field.
There was the usual close competition between our team and Mrs Hunters team
with the scores very close.
Unfortunately from our perspective the four hour event with a very long live
auction after round 6 caused some of our members to lose a bit of interest. They
instead found their Facebook pages and comparing photos to be more fun. No we
were not googling the answers, that is not allowed is it Glenn? We were
legitimately amusing ourselves, although a couple might have been nodding off.
(See photos below)

Even the Bendigo Piggy Bank
got in on the act.

But then again, Pres Paul (without a
phone) found some balloons to play
with.

This weeks report was submitted by Kerry
Compared with the last few market mornings, this Saturday was much better, the sun was up, no
fog and not real cold, UNTIL the B...... wind sprang up. Its alright for those who can relax behind the
gazebo's end partition in the sun and out of the wind, but for those out on the barricades. Jon and
Kerry had no life or mental threatening occurrences, not even the little lady with her card signed by you know who. There were no parking
issues, just idiot drivers, oh its fun to see whether they will stop in time or see the wayward pedestrian. Jon was advised by Hall
heavyweights that the Wells Station Road was now open and the temporary traffic arrangements will cease.
The bags were our saving grace, as the other sales were down.

OUR HISTORY
In 1998 the Rotary Clubs of Queanbeyan and Queanbeyan West Rotary decided to sponsor a new Rotary Club based in Jerrabomberra. Bill
Lilley, John Snedden and Peter Jarvis from Queanbeyan West took on the joint roll of mentoring the development of the new club. (Peter
Jarvis went on to become our Charter President).
Advertising for potential members began in March 1998. After a successful campaign, the Club was chartered on 18 November 1998 with 26
members.
Initial meetings were held at the Jerrabomberra General Storethe venue was very good until we grew in numbers. We then moved to the
Jerrabomberra Community Centre for a few years, and we now meet at the Jerrabomberra Public School Staff Room, on Thursdays (6.15 for
6.30 pm).
(Charter) President Peter Jarvis ran competitions to select a name for our Club Newsletter and a design for the Club banner. There were some
good and some not so good suggestions. Pam Spencer suggested the winning bulletin name Jerraganda and David Stevens was the
successful designer of our club banner. The design incorporated a goose and the windmill associated with the original entrance to the estate
adjacent to the Community Centre. Both the Jerraganda and the Club logo have evolved to keep pace with modern times.
We have always been, and continue to be, a vibrant and fun loving club providing valued community service, both locally and internationally.
Our motto is,
Doing Good and Having Fun
