The Challenge of Todays Enterprise

IT departments face the constant demand to respond more rapidly to changing business
priorities, application demands, and user dynamics all without compromising security
or manageability or increasing server count. They must deliver robust data management,
business uptime, and complete backup and recovery capabilities. In order to address
these challenges, enterprises need to:
Standardize on a reduced number of hardware configurations drastically reducing
the time required to deploy upgrades and patches
Provide effective, near-term high-availability for cost-effective protection against phys-
ical server and storage failures in an application-agnostic manner
Adjust allocation of server and storage resources for different application workloads
on the fly
Consider scalability for the largest enterprise applications
Deploy a tightly unified server and storage virtualization solution that is reliable, not
overly complex and leverages all available capabilities
The Solution: Citrix XenServer and NetApp

Storage
Solutions Improve Business Agility
Citrix Data Center Automation solutions offer users the ability to dynamically scale their
application workloads, rapidly respond to the need to deliver new applications to the
business or end users, and recover from failure or disasters. Through the use of server
virtualization and dynamic server provisioning, Citrix offers enterprises powerful platforms
for consolidation and dynamic pooling of server, network and storage resources into a
powerful and secure application delivery infrastructure, while simultaneously increasing
availability and disaster preparedness.
Powerful integration between Citrix XenServer and NetApp intelligent storage solutions
simplifies configuration and management, reducing costs while enhancing business agili-
ty. Companies are no longer forced to manage their virtualized storage infrastructure by
using proprietary consoles and file systems, thus failing to take advantage of the rich
capabilities of existing storage systems, or by using loosely coupled storage services with
the increased complexity of separate, non-integrated management tools. This integration
from Citrix and NetApp conveniently addresses these challenges in todays enterprise.
Solution Brief
Citrix XenServer for Enterprise-Ready
Virtualization
Citrix XenServer is a native 64-bit virtualization platform,
with the scalability required by Microsoft Exchange
Server, Microsoft SQL Server, Citrix Presentation Server,
and other business-critical applications. The highest
host and guest CPU and memory limits available, cou-
pled with fine-grained controls for processor, network,
and disk, enable it to deliver optimal quality of service.
With Citrix XenServer virtualization, businesses can
increase server and storage utilization, reducing costs of
equipment, power, cooling, and real estate. By combin-
ing servers and storage into resource pools that can be
apportioned to the applications with the highest busi-
ness need, IT operations can be aligned to changing
demands and business priorities.
With XenMotion, running virtual machines can be migrat-
ed to new servers with no service interruption, allowing
essential workloads to get needed resources and enable
zero-downtime maintenance. Citrix XenServer products
install directly on bare metal servers, requiring no dedi-
cated host operating system. Open command-line (CLI)
and programming (API) interfaces make it easy for com-
panies to integrate Citrix XenServer virtualization with
existing processes and management tools, rather than
requiring rip-and-replace reimplementation. Key benefits
and features include:
Enterprise-ready performance and scalability
Simple deployment and installation
Flexible shared infrastructure
On-demand deployment of Windows and Linux virtu-
al machines
Powerful storage management
Efficient, secure virtual networking
Live migration
XenCenter multi-server management, included with
product
Server workloads delivered on demand via streaming
NetApp Storage Solutions for
Enterprise-Ready Virtualization
Unified storage solutions from NetApp complement the
manageability, utilization and cost-saving benefits of
Citrix XenServer. NetApp solutions enable powerful thin
provisioning, simplified data management and scalable
and consistent I/O performance for all IT protocols
across NAS, Fibre Channel and iSCSI SAN in a single
pool of storage. Key benefits and features include:
Supports SAN, IP-SAN, or NAS
Scales non-disruptively to hundreds of TB
Easily installed, configured, managed, and maintained
Rapid backup and recovery with zero penalty
Snapshots
Simple, cost-effective replication for Disaster
Recovery
Instant space-efficient data clones for provisioning
and testing
Dynamically expand and contract storage volumes
as needed
Data deduplication to reduce capacity requirements
NetApp storage solutions offers these powerful data
management and data protection capabilities, allowing
Citrix XenServer users the ability to lower cost while
meeting their capacity, utilization, and performance
requirements.

Citrix XenServer and NetApp Storage
Solution benefits include:
Smoothly expand or shrink server and storage
workloads
XenServer virtual servers and their applications can
be provisioned, backed up, restored, replicated and
deduplicated using NetApp tools, allowing optimal
data management at all times
Higher availability and recovery
Simple server and storage management with dramatic
savings in power, cooling and data center space
This unique solution works with the rest of the Citrix
family of products, including XenApp (formerly called
Presentation Server,) Provisioning Server, and
XenDesktop.

Storage Delivery Services datasheet.
Summary
While other virtualization products waste valuable server
resources on proprietary management of storage servic-
es, Citrix XenServer enables each hardware component
to do what it does best: NetApp storage systems can
deliver optimal data management and performance, and
servers can direct their power to business-critical appli-
cation workloads. By incorporating the best practices
for configuration, allocation and administration into the
NetApp Data ONTAP Adapter, Citrix XenServer makes
optimal management of storage in a virtualized environ-
ment automatic allowing organizations to unify virtual-
ization management for reduced management cost and
increased agility. This combined solution provides pow-
erful support for the rest of the Citrix family of products.
The Combined Solution
Citrix XenServer enables native NetApp storage services
to be driven directly from the standard XenServer man-
agement interfaces, such as XenCenter, the command-
line interface (xe), or third-party management tools
based on XenAPI. Regardless of the point of manage-
ment, XenServer administrators can take advantage of
direct integration between virtual server storage opera-
tions and the rich capabilities of the NetApp storage
solution itself. The included adapter enables direct
control of storage provisioning and configuration along
with Snapshot backups, without the proprietary layer
that complicates management in other products. Users
can reap the benefits of their investment in NetApp stor-
age more effectively, protecting their investment in hard-
ware and software as well as management processes
and training.
When Citrix XenServer is deployed with NetApp Network
Storage, storage for new virtual machines can either be
fully provisioned on dedicated storage capacity or use
space-efficient allocation directly from the XenServer
interface. This flexibility allows IT administrators to direct-
ly optimize their heterogeneous storage systems for
either highest performance or optimal resource sharing.
By incorporating best practices for NetApp storage,
Citrix XenServer users are able to make optimal use of
their storage resources in a virtualized environment. This
combined solution allows organizations to unify virtual-
ization management for reduced management costs and
increased agility.
