SEPTEMBER 8TH IS INTERNATIONAL LITERACY DAY.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organiza-
tion (UNESCO) established Literacy Day in 1965 to call attention
to the world-wide issues of illiteracy. Nations throughout the world
recognize that deficits in literacy are contributing to unemployment,
poverty and many other societal problems. It is more likely for
children to have low literacy in homes where parents have low
educational levels. Conversely, children with engaged home lit-
eracy environments demonstrate higher reading levels at an early
age. In New York, an estimated 2.7 million adults lack basic lit-
eracy, math and employment stills. Low-level reading and math
skills are linked to poverty, incarceration and dropout rates. Whats
more, the same individuals lack basic health, financial and con-
sumer literacy, according to Literacy New York, Inc., which serves
more than 6,500 adults each year through a network of 34 affili-
ates and their volunteers. Although these statistics are grim, theres
no reason to give up hope, because you can help! Literacy Volun-
teers of Rensselaer County will offer a one-hour Volunteer Op-
portunities Information Session on Wednesday, September 10th,
12:00 noon at the LVORC office, 1915 Fifth Avenue, Troy. Call
274-8526 to reserve a space. LVORC is looking for volunteers to
be individual tutors to adult learners, as well as reading mentors for
Everybody Wins! Power Lunch, and for tutors to work with incar-
cerated learners in Rensselaer County Jail. For more information,
visit www.lvorc.org.

THE PAINTINGS OF D. STEVENS BURGESS. The artwork
of Salem artist, D. Stevens Burgess, is currently on display in the
first floor Benn Room of the Salem Courthouse Community Center
and will remain on view through the month of September. Stevens
was born in New Delhi, India and studied art in Bangkok, Thailand
and New York. His exhibit contains 17 works focusing on land,
water and the natural world. His studies are creations of his own
imagination, and he no longer uses points of reference in any of his
pieces. His tones are subtle, and his paintings draw the viewer into
the landscape in a most relaxing manner. Stevens has exhibited his
work in several area galleries with this being his third exhibit at the
CCC. The Benn room is handicap accessible and open to the
public.

Reflections: Of Eternal
Youth
When I was a little girl, visits to my grandparents home were full
of magic. My Grandma Theresa and I used to sit at her dining room
table in beautiful wooden chairs, side by side with our heads bent
over coloring books. She had a Barbie coloring book for me, which I adorednot
because I liked Barbie dolls (in fact, I preferred GI Joes, thank you very much) but
because I liked to color actual people rather than the cartoon characters in all of the
other books. There was a battered old Royal Dansk cookie tin, chock full of dings
and dents and Crayola crayons for about as long as I can remember. And there was a
stack of coloring books to choose from, but Grandma always kept the Barbie book
set aside for me. There were many grandchildren to compete with, after all, and she
knew how important this particular book was to me. I was very adamant about
coloring the entire book, page by page, and she knew that I would have been crushed
if any of the other kids had scribbled carelessly across the precious pages.
So we would sit there at that table and color at every opportunity. Grandma taught
me how to stay within the lines by first tracing the characters outlines with the tip of
the crayon, and then shading within the outline with the tip slanted at an angle. She
taught me how to pronounce the names of the colors, names like Mahogany and
Magenta, Chartreuse and Turquoise. We deliberated upon important decisions,
such as whether Kens hair should be colored with Indian Red or Ultra Blue. We
giggled together like we were both schoolgirls, telling each other stories about each
picture we colored until we had created a Barbie Universe of our own, in which
neither of us were too young or too old or too anything. We were just two girls with
the power of our imaginations fueling us through page after page of delight until one
day when, after we had finished our coloring and were sitting on the back deck, I
could not help but to grin up at Grandma from where I sat swinging by my hands from
the railing. Grandma, I smiled, Im never gonna grow up. Im gonna stay eight
forever!
And she smiled back at me and said, You know what? Me too.
By Rachel Essaff Maher
From Susans Corner
fall happens here
There isnt a soul around who can complain about not having
anything to do in southwestern New England. Especially in
Bennington County! I know this because Im part of a group of
volunteers who help out at these events. First we have Garlic
Fest held every year at Camelot Village. I hope everyone reading
this took the opportunity to participate in this great event last weekend! There is
always so much to see and do. If you didnt make it this year be sure to go next
year. Following Garlic Fest two weeks later is the annual three-day long Bennington
Car Show at Willow Park in Bennington with vendors, classic cars, entertainment
and good food. A month later you can enjoy Oktoberfest at Colgate Park, again in
Bennington, sponsored by the Norshaft Lions Club. This offers an entire day
filled with music, great German foods, vendors and toe-tapping entertainment by
the Rymanowski Brothers from Troy, New York.
Speaking of fallI have a beautiful ride into Bennington taking back roads. I
know all the dogs and cats by sight who live along the way. I drive at a moderate
speed because of them and the wildlife I encounter. Its so wonderful to see
several deer grazing in a field; a flock of turkeys walking through the tall grass; an
errant fox dashing across the road; a mother raccoon slowly walking from one
side of the road to the other with her young following behind in single file; and
geese, watching over their young keeping everyone flocked together. In another
month we will be picking apples and by October well be drinking hot apple
cider!!
The new smart phones make it so easy to stop and take pictures of these bucolic
scenes to and from Bennington. Even videos! Yes, folks, fall really does happen
here!
POULTNEY AREA ST. DAVIDS SOCIETYS
6TH ANNUAL AUTUMN GATHERING OF THE CLANS WILL BE
HELD SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 21ST
in East Poultney John L. (Jack) Wilson, Historical Researcher / Writer Will be Guest
Speaker, By Janice B. Edwards. The Annual Autumn Gathering of the Clans event of Poultney
Area St. Davids Society, a 26th anniversary year Gathering of the Clans event, will be
held on Sunday, September 21st. Sponsored by Poultney Area St. Davids Society, the
gathering will be held at 2:00 p.m. that Sunday in the main floor fellowship hall of his-
toric United Baptist Church, On the Green, East Poultney, Vermont (home church of the
late famous George Jones, New York Times newspaper). The public is cordially invited
to join with the St. Davids Society. Dessert Social (Te Bach) will be held following the
program. Please bring a dessert to share. Coffee / Tea will be provided. The program will
feature guest speaker, Mr. John L. (Jack) Wilson of Harvard, Massachusetts, an historical
researcher / writer who is working on a book regarding several World War II members of
A Company, 112th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division who were killed by a Ger-
man tank fired point-blank on their position in the town of Kommerscheidt in November
1944. A German explosive ordnance disposal team working in 2008 at a construction
site in the town found fragments of a World War II-era U.S. military boot. The remains
were eventually turned over to the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command for further
analysis and in 2010 were returned to the United States. Jacks uncle, John J. Farrell, Jr.,
was one of those fallen soldiers. Jack has been actively working to find and meet the
families of the soldiers and helping them to bring closure to their lives. It is the life of
another of these soldiers killed, Sgt. Edward T. Jones, Jr. who was from Spruce Gum,
West Pawlet, Vermont, which brings Jack to the Vermont / New York Slate Valley region.
Sgt. Jones remains were buried with full military honors in September 2010 in Our Lady
of Mount Carmel Cemetery in Granville, New York. While here, Jack hopes to meet
people who can share with him their memories or stories of Edward T. Jones life in the
Slate Valley with his friends, his sister Mary and their parents Edward T. & Mary (Whalen)
Jones, both in the West Pawlet community and in its schools as well as in Granville High
School where he was schooled. John L. (Jack) Wilson grew up in New England and has
lived in Americas Midwest and Far West during his professional career. He has worked
for major multinational corporations leading international business development. He has
spent years working in Germany and throughout Europe as well as Japan, China, and South-
east Asia.
He lives today in Harvard, Massachusetts with his wife and family. The public is cordially
invited to join with the St. Davids Society in welcoming Jack Wilson to this Valley and to
learn more from him about his research and forth-coming book. There is no monetary
charge to attend this event. Free Will donations for historic United Baptist Church, East
Poultney, host site, will be gratefully appreciated. For more information contacts include:

LAND DONATED TO SAVE ENDANGERED OWLS! Some very generous people have offered
to donate 14 acres of prime habitat in Fort Edward to Friends of the IBA, a local nonprofit working to
protect endangered Short-eared Owls and other at risk grassland birds and their habitat. The parcel is
located in the heart of the Washington County Grasslands Important Bird Area. Friends of the IBA
(FIBA) is asking for your help to raise $20,000 to cover costs of transferring the land and future
management costs. We need to raise one third of that amount by September 1st to be able to close on
the property, said FIBA President & Director Laurie LaFond. Every contribution helps. This is an
important first acquisition in our Land for Owls campaign. Friends of the IBA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit
and the first official New York State DEC steward of the Washington County Grasslands state areas.
Friends of the IBA was awarded a $5,000 grant from the NYS Conservation Partnership Program by
DEC and Land Trust Alliance in May. LaFond said the grant, funded through the Environmental
Protection Fund (EPF), will help advance the groups mission to provide safe habitat for these beautiful
birds and educate the public about them. Mail checks to Friends of the IBA, P.O. Box 82, Fort Edward,
NY 12828, or call (518) 499-0012 and leave a message. Visit www.ibafriends.org for more info!
Note: The Washington County Grasslands is critical to the survival of Short-eared Owls, as well as
hundreds of other native birds and mammals.

HE SESSION OF STILLWATER UNITED CHURCH (PRESBYTERIAN U.S.A.) IS
EXTREMELY EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE THEIR SELECTION OF INTERIM PASTOR.
REVEREND ALINE RUSSELL, D.MIN. OF ALTON, ILLINOIS will officially start serving
Stillwater United on August 25, and preach her first sermon on Sunday, August 31, at the 9:30
a.m. service. We are pleased to introduce her to you and believe that her pastoral and counseling
experience and spiritual gifts fit very well with the current needs of our church during this time of
transition. She received her Doctor of Ministry degree from Union Theological Seminary in Virginia
in 1977, specializing in Pastoral Care and Counseling, and has current licenses as a Clinical Professional
Counselor, including Pastoral Counseling and Marriage and Family Therapist. Aline was Interim Pastor
at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, Billings, Montana and previously worked with an interfaith
counseling center in St. Louis, Missouri, while maintaining a private practice in Alton, Illinois. Pastor
Aline writes, It is important for us to be open to people whose personal faith is different than ours.
When they speak to us from their hearts, they might be for us in that moment the voice of God. It
behooves us to listen.
The search team said, It has been exciting to become increasingly aware of the evidence that Gods
hand was at work to unite Aline with our congregation. We look forward to having her here and
invite you to come to meet Pastor Aline at the 9:30 a.m. service on Sunday, August 24, 2014. This will
be the first of many opportunities to welcome her into our Stillwater United family and the community.
Please join us!
