Important Upcoming Dates
April Branch Meeting - The Future of Passenger Rail In Richmond
April 29th, 12:00 PM, Westwood Club

President's Message

Finally, I would like to welcome spring, but am
hesitant given the number of storms we have
had this winter. I know as soon as my winter
jacket is stored we will have one last arctic
blast. As long as we have a warm and sunny day
on April 24
th
I will be happy. That Thursday is our
annual golf tournament to raise funds in support
of our college scholarship and educational outreach. We are three weeks
out from the event so take some time this weekend to dust off your clubs
and take a few swings at the driving range. Spending the afternoon with
clients on the golf course is a great way to support the Richmond Branch
of ASCE and our educational outreach program. If you are not able to join
us for a round of golf, please consider the multiple sponsorship
opportunities such as sponsoring a hole, the beverage cart or the longest
drive. Visit our website for additional details, ASCERichmond.org.
Speaking of our annual scholarship, the 2014 application has been updated
and is on our website. Please refer those you know in college studying
civil engineering to our application. $1,000 will be awarded to the
most outstanding applicant. The applications are due at the end of
April.

Lastly, our monthly speaker this month is Kevin Page, Chief Operating
Office of the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation, and
will be held on April 29
th
. Mr. Page will be speaking about the future of
passenger rail in Virginia. The economics, challenges and financing that
will or will not support the expansion of passenger rail in the
Commonwealth. As someone who has taken the train north from Richmond
I am excited to hear Mr. Page's talk and to learn if high speed rail will be
in our future.

Sincerely,

The ASCE Richmond Branch Annual Golf Tournament is held to raise money
to support our educational outreach efforts. This tournament provides the
primary source of funding used by the Education Committee to promote
member involvement to pre-college and college age students.

Money raised will go toward the Popsicle Bridge Competition, held
annually for middle and high school students as part of Engineer's Day at
the Science Museum of Virginia. The money will also provide a $1,000
scholarship to an area student who is majoring in civil engineering, and
support social events throughout the year to promote member
involvement.

Please visit our website or contact Ashley Johnson at 804-771-9159 or
at ajohnson@rkk.com for more information or to register.

ASCE Richmond Branch Scholarship

Once again this year, the Richmond Branch will be awarding a $1,000
scholarship to an area student. The scholarship is open to undergraduate
or graduate students majoring in civil engineering. The scholarship is also
open to local community college students enrolled in engineering courses
with the intent of pursuing a degree in civil engineering.

The application and further information will be available on our
website. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please contact
Ashley Johnson at ajohnson@rkk.com or 804-771-9159.
