Greetings from Cynthia Hutchison
Healing Touch Program Director
Dear Readers,
December Greetings! Welcome to our sixth monthly issue of articles that speak to the heart and to our hope and
quest for healing ourselves and facilitating healing in others. As always, you will be inspired by these personal stories from
our practitioners, students and instructors around the world.
Because our audience is worldwide and spans many cultures and spiritual streams, the usual Christmas greetings that I
would extend to my closer circle of colleagues and friends has to be rethought to be more universal to those of you beyond
the boundaries of my continent and spiritual orientation. Yet, I would like to personalize what I am experiencing in my geo-
graphical location of Boulder, Colorado, nested next to the Rocky Mountains of North America.
As the weather has become crisper and colder;
as the snow periodically blows, falls, dances and leaves us with a blanket of pure, sparkling white essence;
as the hours of daylight decrease and the hours of darkness increase providing extended opportunities to stargaze and
moongaze.
as I allow myself to revel in the changing of the seasons,
with winter weather encouraging me to become more contemplative and inward
I focus on nurturing my own spark of inward light, my own divine essence,
with a prayer that I and all my sisters and brothers who have embraced Healing Touch will strive to walk the walk and talk
the talk of what it means to be a Human Being and a practitioner of this sacred work.
For whatever Season of Light you may be celebrating,
May your light shine brightly, joyfully..with hope, faith, and compassion
With warmth of heart in this season of cold,
Cynthia

how to put them together.
-Fritz Smith, MD, founder of Zero Balancing
I get very excited when I read a medical tidbit or
something about the body and how it works, and
realize how that information is going to help in a
healing treatment! I know youre saying-- Well,
whatever turns you on! But hang in there, and
maybe youll understand what I mean.
A firm knowledge of the body gives us many clues, a real
"heads up", regarding what techniques to use during an
energy treatment. It enhances rather that diminishes intu-
ition--we can interpret our messages from spirit in the lan-
guage of the body. A concrete knowledge of anatomy and
physiology (structure and function) can help us understand
symbology, and help us utilize such techniques as Guided
Imagery, Focusing, and dialoguing with specific body parts
or cells.
1
For example, if you are doing an energy treatment on a
client with high blood pressure (BP), a bit of anatomy will
alert you to pay extra attention to:
1) The Kidneys, because they help control the electrolyte bal-
ance including sodium, which can affect BP. They can be
found at the inferior edge of the ribcage, halfway to the spine
from the side. Kidneys like warm, wet, wavy energy and con-
necting to the kidney meridians on the inside of the knees.
2
2) The Adrenals, which produce the mineral corticoids in their
cortex, especially aldosterone, which control the bodys salt
balance and therefore BP. They also produce the body's own
cortisone, a natural anti-inflammatory, which can cause fluid
retention. They are found covered by the ribs on top of the
kidneys, near the spine. They often need considerable loving
energy as they can get exhausted from excessive stress,
working 24/7 helping their person try to do it all.
3) The Hypothalamus plays a big part in regulating the BP,
partly through the antidiuretic hormone, and by mediating
the stress response. It can be found in the middle of the

are especially good here.
4) The Sympathetic Nervous System, the "fight and flight"
response of stress. This system increases heart rate, raises
BP, dilates pupils, and brings blood to the muscles, getting
the body ready to handle danger, i.e. "tigers". So many peo-
ple fight "paper tigers" as an everyday way of living. It is our
understanding that all Healing Touch techniques quiet the
sympathetic response, bringing parasympathetic relaxation,
the "rest and repair" system. Once again, the mind-balanc-
ing techniques mentioned above are especially good.
Another example of where the knowledge of the body is
helpful is when you are giving Healing Touch post-oper-
atively. We know that Magnetic Clearing is good for clearing
anesthesia and pain control, as is the Pain Drain. The Chakra
Connection is great for over all balance, and Wound Sealing
is very important. These are all excellent Healing Touch Level
1 Techniques for this occasion.
Using the knowledge of how the body clears toxins (like
drugs and anesthesia), could also work effectively to sup-
port:
1) The kidneys eliminate toxins from drugs and anesthesia,
maintain acid/base balance, keep electrolytes in balance,
and maintain blood oxygen levels through the hormone, ery-
thropoietin. (See above for treatment suggestions)
2) The liver detoxifies drugs and anesthesia and releases the
wastes into the intestine via the bile. You can find the liver
under the diaphragm, covered by the ribs on the right side,
with the left lobe extending slightly over to the left side. You
can release congestion from it with the Liver Cleanse
2
or Pain
Drain

, and energize it with wet, warm, wavy energy.
3) The lungs clear anesthesia also. Ultrasound and Magnetic
Passes Hands in Motion are excellent
3.
The Lung Cleanse
2
is
also helpful.
4) The skin clears many toxins, and is sometime called the
"third kidney". Magnetic Clearing
3
and lots of water as soon
as tolerated would be helpful.
5) Lymph/Immune System. The Lymphatic Drain
6
or Lymph
Flush
2
could be helpful with swelling, detoxing, and stimulat-
ing the immune system. The Immune Boost
2
activates and
connects three major structures of the immune system: the
thymus (high heart area), Peyer's Patches (lymph aggregates
in the wall of the small intestine in the lower abdomen), and
the spleen (left side covered by the lower ribs). You can also
ask the thymus to send the proper immune cells (like the
Killer T cells, macrophages, etc) to any potential area of
infection.
1
Talking to the body, aloud or silently, is wonderful-
ly effective.
6) Surgical wounds could benefit from Wound Sealing
3
and
the Scar Integration Technique.
2,7
The latter uses Ultrasound
energy in a figure 8 motion to reestablish energy flow and
reweave tissues in a normal pattern. You can also ask the
stem cells (prototype cells that can become any cell) from the

bone marrow or blood to come to that area to encourage tis-
sue regeneration.
1
The subtle energy flows of Healing Touch
also encourage healing while holding the vision of health and
wholeness.
7) Surgical trauma causes energy toxins to be released
from the emotional centers of the brain, such as the amyg-
dalas and reticular alarm system (RAS). You can use the
mind-balancing techniques mentioned before, especially The
Relaxation of the Emotional Structures of the Brain

. Many
allergens are associated with trauma and can be treated
energetically.

In the later recovery stages, Janet Mentgens
Cellular Trauma Release from her Advanced Practice

class
can be helpful.
Of course, you would be assessing throughout the treatment
and not using all of these techniques at one timea little
goes a long way with clients after surgery!
Are you getting the idea? Learning about the body is fun and
useful! Clinical applications of anatomy similar to these apply
to all organs and systems of the body. Once you learn and
use the knowledge of structure and function in your healing
treatments, intuition and guidance will take over in a pro-
found way.
Janet Mentgen had a solid knowledge of anatomy and used
it well. She had a healing tool, the Mind Mirror, a kind of a lap-
top EEG. It showed that when healers are healing, they are in
right and left brain, and Beta, Alpha, Theta, and Delta levels
of consciousness all at the same time. I believe that we
shouldn't think of ourselves as meditative zombies doing
healing, but should bring in all our faculties as much as
possible, being grounded while connected to spirit. That
way we can be available to assist our client to self-heal in
the highest way possible and experience the miracle of the
human body.
With Janet Mentgens encouragement, I developed my pro-
gram Experiential Anatomy and Physiology for Healers, An
Energetic Approach, to achieve the above goals. It consists
of three levels of advance practice workshops (prerequisite:
Healing Touch Level 3 or the equivalent) which teach the
body's wisdom by learning about the structure, location,
functions, and energy of each of the organs and body sys-
tems. These workshops deepen the healing practice by
teaching students physical and energetic information of what
is happening under their hands while giving a healing ses-
sion. Many new energy exercises and treatments are learned
at each level with a multi-media, hands-on approach.
Classes are joyful, non-intimidating, and suitable for both the
novice and experienced anatomy student.
Level 1 teaches the energetic experience of the normal body
systems, organs, and endocrine glands. It covers the whole
body. Level 2 gives a more in-depth experience of several of
the body systems: skeletal (back), digestive, cardiovascular,
endocrine, and respiratory, including a full treatment protocol
for allergies. It teaches an anatomical approach to treating
diseases. Level 3 studies in much greater detail the brain and

Then our instructor began telling us about a service program
that she had been involved with in Hawaii, which matched
breast cancer patients with Healing Touch providers. Each
individual with cancer was matched with a volunteer who
provided weekly Healing Touch sessions for a year. She told
us how these sessions provided peace and support, and
how the sessions made a huge impact on the lives of these
women. I thought of all of the people I knew with cancer, and
as she spoke, I felt a rush of energy and my pulse quick-
ened. I knew that a program like this would make a differ-
ence in Colorado, and in that moment I knew that I would
help create it.
Within weeks a committee was formed, and QuaLife
Wellness Community, a non-profit organization - serving
individuals with cancer, agreed to host the program. Our
planning committee, with much vision and forethought,
chose to open the program to other modalities, including
both Reiki and Healing Touch. This decision has resulted in
a rich mixture of volunteers who learn from one another and
add to the wisdom and collective strength of the program.
The committee made other decisions as well, such as the
decision to welcome individuals with any stage and type of
cancer, to shorten the matching time to six months, and to
require all volunteer providers to carry professional liability
insurance (QuaLife, of course, carried its own). In November
2002, after a year of planning and preparation, we launched
the program.
Our first two years of the program ran smoothly with much
growth and learning. We served 64 people with over 1,000
hours of sessions. Then, at the end of 2004, to our great dis-
may QuaLife closed its doors. Suddenly, we were without a
home and without a parent organization. Our committed
group of volunteers was determined to continue. However,

It was a warm September morning, just
11 days after the 9/11 attacks on the Twin
Towers at the World Trade Center. I
arrived for a Level 3 Healing Touch class
with only two other students from the ros-
ter of those who had registered.
Over lunch, sitting outside at a local
restaurant, our class discussed our fragile
world, and the mood was somber. We
were feeling shock and grief, and I had an
empty feeling in my heart. Each of us
wanted to do something, and we knew
that Healing Touch could help with the
healingbut New York City is a long way

after looking for another organization to host us, we realized
we really needed to start our own. We held sessions in
churches and clinics and the program continued without
interruption while we set up a new organization. We named
this new organization LifeSpark, to signify the spark of life
that we hope to strengthen in each person we touch, and
named our program Energy Partners.
This month marks the fourth year of this program, and we
have continued to expand and develop. We hold New
Provider Seminars twice a year to welcome and train
Healing Touch and Reiki providers for our program. These
18 contact hour seminars cover topics such as ethics, pro-
fessionalism, psychological aspects of the relationship,
and self care. We have a committed core of about 40 vol-
unteers who serve in the program and work together to
support those individuals receiving services. Since our
inception, we have served over 140 individuals with over
2000 session hours.
This year, we added several new health care sites including
two outpatient oncology departments, one in Englewood
and one in Denver. Each site is different and provides the
opportunity to discover the best way for our program to
meet the needs of the patients and staff. We work in space
that often has multiple uses, and we must be adaptable and
flexible. Building relationships with our partner medical facil-
ities take time, and we take great care in nurturing them. Our
job is to be an oasis of calm and peace, providing comfort
and support to the individual with cancer while supporting
and accommodating the medical staff.
While many things have changed in this program, some
things will never change. We were founded on the principle
of service, a desire deep within our hearts to be of service to
other individuals, and to make the world a better place. We
were also founded on equal partnership between the indi-
vidual and the provider, between our program and the host-
ing facility, and between the providers and their mentors.
Our program will always be centered on these principles.
There are many to thank for our success. Those early plan-
ners established a solid foundation for this program. The
instructor that I met was none other than Anne Day, who
brought the Bosom Buddy program model from Hawaii to
Colorado, and played a central role in building our program.
Other committee members were Janet Mentgen, Lisa
Anselme, and Mary Maynard from the Healing Touch com-
munity, Kim Strombous and Doug Gibbs from the Reiki
community, and Carole Lindroos and Naomi Sullivan from
QuaLife. Each brought something unique and special, and it
was the combination that created such a strong and vibrant
beginning. Our volunteer providers and mentors are the
heartbeat of this program, our Board of Directors provides
leadership and guidance, and our donors nurture us with
their belief in our program. We are truly blessed.
I remember that September morning five years ago, when
we discussed our precious world; I believe good things can
come from tragedy. I join hands with my amazing colleagues
and friends who are energy therapists, health care profes-
sionals, cancer patients, and community members, in bring-
ing forward a program that comes from the heart, that
touches many, and that makes a lasting difference. That
program is the Energy Partners program of LifeSpark

One of my greatest fears was realized 16
months ago when I was diagnosed with a
recurrence of breast cancer. Five years
earlier, after treatment and surgery, every-
one thought I was done with cancer, and
I had put it all behind me. Then, while
undergoing a routine procedure, we dis-
covered lumps in my neck. When the
tests came back, things were looking
pretty grim.
Then I found an excellent oncologist who started me on a
dramatic new medication, and with the love of my family, my
situation began to look up. However, I was paralyzed with
fear. I couldnt sleep, focus, or think coherently. Even though
my oncologist was very pleased with my response to treat-
ment and called it an excellent prognosis I could not
believe I could really get well. I used to say that if the Lord
himself had told me Diana Marlowe-Newman, you will
recover I would have said, Oh, youre just saying that.
My emotional state was definitely harming my recovery.
Western medicine alone has never been enough for me
and I wanted other avenues of treatment. Vitamins and
herbs helped, but I was still suffering from panic attacks
that all but immobilized me. The medication was amazing-
ly effective for my treatment and I never lost my hairbut
it also produced excruciating pain in my legs, and I felt like
a 90 year-old woman. I could hardly walk, sit, or even get
dressed in the morning.
Then a dear friend told me about LifeSpark, a Denver
based program that supports people with cancer. He
helped me make my first appointment, and even drove me
to my first session (I was unable to drive at that time). At
that first session, I met my Healing Touch provider Jolene,
and then I got on the table. What an experience! I left feel-
ing calmer and the pain was much less. It was amazing! I
knew I had found what I needed.
At these appointments, the music would start and as Jolene
worked, a blanket of calm would fall over me, and I would
relax. It was such a relief to experience that relaxation even for
a short period. My mind began to clear and as time went on, I
would arrive with questions or problems in my mind and dur-
ing my treatment, the answers would come. I grew to BELIEVE
that I was not a disease and that things could get better.

My Journey to
Wholeness
By Diana Marlowe-Newman,
participant in LifeSparks Energy Partners program
With the help of Jolene I created visualizations of my
health. I stopped playing the what ifs over and over
again, and learned to live more in the moment. The pain in
my legs significantly diminished and it was easier to walk
and resume normal activities. My provider taught me
Healing Touch techniques to do at home and that helped
even more.
I no longer live in the grip of fear. My physical pain is man-
ageable and getting better every day. I have much more
energy and have gone back to most of my prior activities.
This did not happen instantly or overnight. It was a grad-
ual shift consisting of small changes and small triumphs,
which added up to a big whole. My oncologist says that
Im doing exceptionally well and I think of myself as a
new face of healing.
Many times I wish the cancer had not come backor
never happened at alland that I could just live my life
as I did before. However, when I look at everything, I
know that things worked out the way they were meant to
be. If I had not had the recur-
rence of cancer, I would never
have experienced Healing
Touch. For me, this is the most
important part. I feel that I have
found my calling. I am currently
enrolled at Red Rocks College
and have just completed
Healing Touch Level 3. My goal
is to volunteer for LifeSpark and
give back a little of what they
have given me.
LifeSpark turned my life around in
a way I never expectedand my
journey to wholeness has become
my opportunity to help others find
their way back as well.

Gifts and Goals
Man is a goal seeking animal. His life only

December is gift giving season and a time to set
financial goals. Its not unusual for people to have
mixed feelings about money at this time of year.
Its easy to go overboard with holiday spending
because of a generous heart, but after the gifts are
exchanged then bottom line thinking sets in as
budget planning and goal-setting time approaches
for the New Year. This is a time when the internal
dialogue with the self can sound something like a
tiff one aspect of the self is critical of overspend-
ing, and other aspect of the self is critical for even
worrying about money.
When we make a list of our goals, we write out how we
want to take care of ourselves, things we want for our fam-
ilies, trips we want to go on, educational programs we
want to complete, bills we want to pay off, and we look at
what it is going to take to get there it takes money to
achieve these things.
Our goals often have a financial connection although
they are not always dependent on money. So why do so
many people, especially those in service to others, feel
like they dont want to or shouldnt focus on making
money? There are so many negative beliefs around
striving to make money that create an inertia in individ-
uals that buys into that thinking - its like stopping a river
that wants to flow.
Here is one way to overcome negative beliefs about mak-
ing money: See money as an energy that is always avail-
able to serve you. It is an energy that needs direction, and
just by your mere intention it can respond. Make sure it
serves you, and you dont serve it.
Francis Bacon demonstrates this well in his quote:
If money be not thy servant,
it will be thy master.
So give freely of your heart at the holiday, without judg-
ment, and be generous with yourself when you set your
goals for the New Year. Keep in mind that you can direct
the course of what flows to you financially with your goals
and intention and by overcoming your negative beliefs.

Ialways say that Healing Touch dropped
out of the sky to me. From a suggestion
I once heard on a Deepak Chopra tape, I
was regularly asking, while in meditation,
What are my unique gifts and how can I
best serve humanity? One day just after
I asked that question, I literally felt like
someone walked up and whispered
Therapeutic Touch in my ear. I had never
even heard of it before. I went straight to the library to find
a book about it. Following a series of phone calls, which
started with a phone number in the back of the book, I
ended up on the phone with CCHT (now HTP). Within a
few weeks I registered for a Level 1 class with Cynthia
Hutchison. Within the first five minutes of that class, I felt
like I was home.
There is a Marianne Williamson quote from A Return to Love
that says, And as we let our own light shine, we uncon-
sciously give other people permission to do the same. There
was an exact moment in the middle of my Level 2 class with
Carol Komitor that I suddenly felt an empowered knowing-
ness that I could do this work for a living. I believe Carols
light sparked something in me as she confidently shared sto-
ries of her life work with Healing Touch. That was the first
vision I had of myself as an instructor.
Although I work with a variety of people of all ages, gen-
ders, and states of wellness and illness, I have a special
place in my heart for working with children. Kids say the
most profound things. I once had a 3-year-old boy walk
into my office, for his second session with me, holding his
upper belly. He said, Lauri Pointer, I think this chakra
needs to be opened. Sure enough, the energy flow in his
solar plexus was very compromised. My goal is always to
teach people to tune into their own energy system - to
learn the language of their own energy. Needless to say, he
got it! It just shows that we come into the planet knowing.
With kids we can really help keep that innate wisdom intact
and with adults, I think we are all here helping each other
re-remember.

A year and a half ago, I took my daughter, Lindsey, who
was 14 at the time, on a backpacking trip to Europe. I
wanted to travel to healing sites and see what I could
sense about the energy there. Lindsey and I both went
through the healing ritual at Lourdes in France, being
dunked naked in the freezing cold healing water. As we
were leaving, while glancing at lines of people in wheel-
chairs, Lindsey said, You know, I think a big part of why
healing happens here is it helps people believe it is possi-
ble to heal. I think she is right. That really is the founda-
tion of my belief about healing. As a practitioner, the more
I can see people whole and healed, when they have lost
site of it, the more potential for healing there is.
I dont think we can do this work without our own stuff
coming up for healing. Its the old healer heal thyself
adage. Sometimes the journey of self-healing can be
rough, but ultimately, it continues to be an opportunity to
clear what is no longer working and be able to live life
lighter and freer.
Over the years, I have learned to offer explanations of
Healing Touch to specific audiences, to make it easily
digestible and easy to understand. Often I do that by simply
inviting the Divine to speak through me. I accept many invi-
tations to speak about Healing Touch and have written many
articles about it which has resulted in an increased aware-
ness of Healing Touch in my community. I think the more we
educate people, the more the Healing Touch Program will
grow. I feel immense gratitude to Janet Mentgen for sharing
Healing Touch with us and for the fact that I am able to make
a living in such a meaningful way.
Janet used to say just do 3 things a day to put your work out
there. That really is how I built my Healing Touch practice, as
a practitioner and an instructor. Its such a practical idea
because those three things let people know about your work.
Even more importantly, they create an energetic law of
attraction to draw to you more of what you desire - in this
case, the opportunity to do Healing Touch and teach Healing
Touch. I meditate daily and invite my guides and angels to
guide me for everything- marketing, teaching, writing arti-
cles, relationships, hiring office help, etc. There is so much
assistance available to us in the spiritual realmwe just need
to remember to ask for it.

It behooves all of us to develop our innate ability to flow
energy. As a mother, I cant imagine not knowing Healing
Touch. I love that my kids have grown up with it. Both of
my kids used to do Healing Touch on their friends when
they got hurt on the playground, even as far back as
kindergarten. Can you imagine how different our world
would be if everyone could and would facilitate healing
and comfort for each other with Healing Touch? You cant
help but treasure the life of another the minute that energy
flows through you to them. Maybe if we had one big world-
wide Healing Touch class, we could know world peace in
our lifetime
Im amazed at how different the climate is in hospitals now
compared to ten years ago in terms of their acceptance of
complementary therapies like Healing Touch. This is an
opportune time for people to learn Healing Touch and
become certified; the need for practitioners and instructors
will continue to grow as the demand of consumers for a
form of health care that treats them as a whole person
continues to increase. Im very excited to continue on this
journey and emerge into a new era where Healing Touch is
a household word and all people have access to it. This is
an exciting time to be part of Healing Touch!

The mothers concern was evident in the
email message. Her first baby, just six
months old, had been diagnosed with
metopic synostosis, a closure of the
sutures in her skull. From the bridge of the
babys nose straight up to her hairline, the
two front plates had fused together pre-
maturely. Surgery would have to be per-
formed to correct the condition: cosmeti-
cally, the sutures needed to be re-opened
so she would have an un-ridged fore-
head; neurologically, the area needed to
be opened so the babys brain would
have room to grow at a normal pace with
no pressure buildup. Surgeons would also
realign the brow bone, bringing it forward
more to protect her eyes.
There would be both a neurosurgeon and a cranial facial
plastic surgeon. Both reassured the parents that this sur-
gery was quite common, that one in every 3,000 babies
requires it. The surgery itself would take about 4 hours, the
baby would be in the hospital 5-6 days, and they should be
prepared to see extreme swelling and bruises around the
eyes during that time. To add to the stress, the best age to
perform this surgery, according to the physicians, was 8-9
months of age, so weeks of worry and concern lay ahead.
I had provided Healing Touch for the baby shortly after her
birth, and again when she was 3 months old and exhibit-
ing symptoms of colic. (I remember she went from scream-
ing to smiling on the first pass of Magnetic Clearing!) On
this occasion it would be Healing Touch before and after
surgery. I suggested the parents contact the neurosurgeon
to request that I be allowed access to the recovery room.
Although he had not heard of Healing Touch, it was

approved on the basis of it being complementary and
adjunctive to traditional medical care AND that the par-
ents were requesting it. In this particular childrens hospi-
tal, patients go directly from the OR to the PICU (pediatric
intensive care unit) and stay in PICU for the length of the
hospital stay. The physician said he would clear my pres-
ence and purpose with the staff.
Healing Touch sessions began 4 days before surgery and
consisted of assessment with pendulum of the seven
major energy centers and hand scan of the field. (Rather
than chakras and aura, I used the terminology energy
centers and energy field throughout this experience.)
The energy centers produced a clockwise spin when pen-
duled and the field felt clear and balanced. This was the
case all 4 days. Treatment consisted of Magnetic Clearing
and Magnetic Passes Hands in Motion (MPHIM) each day
and was provided when the baby was sleeping.
On the day of surgery the baby received preoperative
Healing Touch, consisting again of MPHIM and Magnetic
Clearing, while being held by her mother.
The neurosurgeon gave us the first report. "There was a
considerable lack of blood loss," he said, "and that bodes
well for her recovery." He went on to remark that doctors
correlate recovery time, and problems during that time, to
blood loss during surgery.
Moments after the baby arrived in the PICU, I was able to
begin the first treatment. Pendulum assessment showed
all energy centers to be clockwise/open except brow and
crown, which were still. Hand scan showed extreme heat
and prickly sensation above the incision, which was over
the top of the head from ear to ear. I centered and started
the treatment with Magnetic Clearing to clear excess anes-
thesia from the field. Next I did Ultrasound to the incision,
top of the head, forehead and eyes to seal any internal
bleeding and to treat the swelling before it was apparent.
I followed Ultrasound with MPHIM over the area and then
over the whole body. Reassessment showed all energy
centers to be clockwise/open; hand scan showed prickly
sensation gone and heat reduced to lukewarm. The heart
rate showed 169 on the monitor before the treatment and
114 as I was finishing. I did three more treatments that
evening using the same techniques.
The next morning I approached the babys nurse outside
the room and asked, Hows our baby doing today? I
went on to explain that I was the babys Healing Touch
Practitioner. Oh, she said, I didnt know YOU were in the
mix! She went on to say, Well, then, youll be very inter-
ested in this. All the PICU nurses have been in to see her
this morning. They could not believe that her head didnt
swell last night and still isnt this morning! They had to see
for themselves.
Indeed, the baby had no swelling except a small amount
around the incision. I continued Healing Touch with 6 treat-
ments that day. I assessed her every one to two hours with
hand scan and started treatment as soon as imbalances
reappeared. She had been crying and fussy all night and
early morning. She was able to sleep a bit after almost
every treatment. During one of those sessions, the babys
nurse came in while the family was out of the room.

She asked what I was doing specifically. I explained that
this particular technique (Magnetic Clearing) was often
used after surgery for pain, trauma and to clear excess
anesthesia in the energy field. She then commented, She
really does well with this treatment! Since I could see no
difference, except by reassessment of the field, I asked
how she knew that. She responded, Well, she just looks
so much better. She looked unchanged to me. Then it
dawned on me! Do you see her energy field? I asked.
She blushed ever so slightly and said yes. She went on
to explain how the field presented before the session and
how it looked now (from cloudy and murky to more like
white light). Wonderful! I said. We became instant part-
ners for the next two days; she agreed to visually check
before and after each session and we would compare
assessment notes.
On the morning of Day 3 she stopped me on my way into the
babys room. She reported the babys head and face were
now quite swollen and bruising was apparent around the
eyes. (See photo). She asked if I had been watching the
monitors before, during and after the treatment. I admitted to
most of the time. Come, look at the charting, she said.
She proceeded to point out the hourly monitor readings on
heart rate, respiration and blood oxygenation rate, all of
which showed remarkable improvement during Healing
Touch and continued to improve with each session. Jackie,
she said, we just dont see these numbers this soon--even
with babies that do well after this surgery.
Given that the swelling and bruising had finally appeared,
I decided to add the Pain Drain over the forehead with the
intention that it not only drain pain but swelling as well.
This was preceded by techniques of Magnetic Clearing,
Ultrasound, and MPHIM. She received 5 HT treatments
that day.
The next morning, the staff was talking about the baby
going home around noon! It was less than 72 hours since
surgery. The swelling had already started to abate and as I
assessed her the first time that day, I noted that the ener-
gy had held nicely from the day before. All energy centers
were clockwise/open and the field around her head was
only slightly warm with no prickly sensations. After center-
ing, I followed with what had become the traditional treat-
ment for her. She received two sessions of HT that morn-
ing and went home that afternoon2-3 days early and on
no medications! (Baby Tylenol was suggested for pain, if
needed). Her physicians noted that though they like to see
at least one eye open a slit before leaving the hospital, this
baby was doing so well, they felt the eyes would open
soon and she would do better at home. Both physicians
commented on how very pleased they were at the recon-
struction and the babys response to all of it.
Healing Touch sessions continued daily for the next week.
The energy was holding in a balanced state with 1-2 treat-
ments/day, given usually at morning naptime and evening
bedtime. She continued to improve rapidly (Day 5 photo).
I taught the mother the Ultrasound and Magnetic Passes
Hands in Motion for continued use over the remaining
swelling. The mother reported that the baby passed her 6-
week postoperative checkup with flying colors!

Executive Summary
This case report describes the pain-level reduction in a
client with Marfans syndrome. The clients chronic pain
level was reduced by almost half with regular Healing
Touch sessions. Use of Healing Touch may be an impor-
tant adjunct to the complex therapeutic approach to
chronic pain in Marfans syndrome.
Background
The client, M.C., a 60-year-old female, presented with a
history of Marfans syndrome that had caused chronic pain
in her joints and back for over 10 years. The client experi-
enced more pain typically in her left hip and low back, but
would also experience pain in various other joints. The
pain was described as aching, typically 5 - 8 on a pain
scale of 1 - 10, with 10 being the most severe.
Occasionally the client experienced sharp, stabbing
spasms with a pain level of 10 in her upper back, between
her shoulder blades.
In addition to the chronic pain, client complaints included
insomnia, low energy, headaches, and irritable bowel symp-
tom. M.C. said she would often feel her heart pounding, and
was under physician care for depression, hypothyroidism,
and aortic dilation. Among other prescribed medicines, M.C.
frequently took an analgesic for discomfort. M.C. had been
keeping a daily pain journal to rate the amount of pain expe-
rienced before the Healing Touch work and continued this
practice during the treatments. M.C. said, Keeping this jour-
nal was indisputable proof that my pain level decreased sig-
nificantly from the very first Healing Touch treatment.
Marfans syndrome is a hereditary condition that affects
the bodys connective tissue. Because connective tissue is
found throughout the body, Marfans syndrome can affect
many body systems including the skeleton, eyes, heart
and blood vessels, nervous system, skin, and lungs. Those
with Marfans syndrome can experience mild to moderate
symptoms of osteoporosis, loose joints, dislocation of
lenses of the eye, abnormalities of heart and blood vessels
such as aortic dilation, dural ectasia (weakening of dura
that surrounds the brain and spinal cord), stretch marks on
the skin, hernias, and sleep apnea. Additional information
can be found on the National Marfan Foundation website:
www.marfan.org
Because Marfans syndrome can affect so many body
systems, the signs and symptoms of the disease vary
greatly--even among members of the same family. Some
people experience only mild effects, whereas, others
have severe problems. In most cases, the disease tends
to worsen with age.
Healing Touch Interventions
The client was initially seen for Healing Touch treatments
every week for three weeks, until the reduction in pain
became sustained. Treatments were then scheduled every
two weeks for approximately six months duration. Treatment
sessions lasted about an hour and always involved a full
body treatment. I would start with the Opening Spiral tech-
nique and Mind Clearing, if necessary, in order to reach a
level of relaxation and spiritual connection to allow for deep-
er work. Full body techniques most often included Chakra

Connection; and Chelation to the 4th level, when the client
was particularly depleted emotionally and physically. Since I
have taken Sue Hovland's Anatomy and Physiology classes
for Energetic Healers, I often sent my intention during the
Chakra Connection to work through the connective tissue
(the problem area with Marfan's clients).
Depending on the clients symptoms, additional tech-
niques to reduce pain or distress would be used including
frequent use of Mind Clearing, to decrease stress and
increase relaxation; back techniques such as Opening
Spinal Flow, Spinal Cleansing; and Pain Drain. I used the
Chakra Spread two times - after severe pain, and once for
her 60th birthday (which was a dreaded birthday because
several relatives with Marfan's had died around that birth-
date.) I used the Hopi technique once.
The clients initial chronic pain level, typically rated as 5 8
on the pain scale, would diminish significantly or disappear
completely by the end of the session. Over time, M.C.s
chronic pain experience reduced to 2 - 4 on the pain scale.
Besides the reduction of overall pain, the client reported
fewer spasms of pain during the day, increased energy,
improved sleep and less severe headaches. M.C. stated,
My cycles of discomfort have flattened out and usually
stay at around 4 on the pain scale. The client also said
she felt the need to take pain medicine less frequently.
When she sometimes injured herself, she felt better much
sooner than before treatments began; e.g., in two days
instead of two weeks.
The National Marfan Foundation held a workshop on Pain
Management and Health Touch Energy at their annual con-
ference in St. Louis the summer of 2005. This client felt so
strongly about the efficacy of her HT treatments that she was
instrumental in encouraging the Marfan Conference Board to
add a presentation on Healing Touch to the 2005 National
Conference agenda. The 2005 Marfan Foundations National
Conference was the first time a Healing Touch presentation
had been made to this audience.
Summary
Use of Healing Touch may be an important adjunct to the
complex therapeutic approach to chronic pain in Marfans
syndrome clients.
