When Telltale announced they were making a series of episodic games based off of DC Comics
relatively unknown Fables series, you would have been forgiven for being slightly apprehensive.
After all, the company had just reinvented the graphic adventure genre with the immensely
popularTheWalkingDead;followingupwithagamebasedonalesserknownlicensecouldhave
beenrisky.Thankfully,TelltalehavesomemagicuptheirsleevesandTheWolfAmongUsisjustas
good as (in fact it could be, whisper it, better than) The Walking Dead. The games titular hero
mightnotbehumanbuttheproblemsandissuesfacedbyBigbyWolfmakehimasrelatableasany
character. Plus, hes a supernatural badass, which always helps. As with The Walking Dead, The
Wolf Among Us allows the player to shape the story through their own choices and decisions.
NearlyallofBigbysdialoguecanbepickedfromuptofourchoices,givingplayercontrolofnearly
everything,fromsmallsnippetsofchattertohuge,gamechangingdecisions.Whilethegamemay
stillfollowafairlylinearnarrative,makingthesechoiceshelpsinvolvetheplayermoreandappeals
toourimagination,evenifwereonlydecidingwhetheracharactermakesasilentappearancein
a later episode or not. Some of the big choices are interestingly complex; they really make you
questionyourmorality;shouldBigbyWolfbethemonstereveryonewantshimtobeorshouldhe
betryingtowinpeopleoverwithafriendlieroutlookonthings?Thesequestionsareposedtothe
playerbythegameanditswhyitssoengrossing;severaldecisionsinthegamehaveharrowing
consequencesanditsthesechoiceswhichweregoingtobeexploringinthisarticle.Someofthese
seem relatively minor but in the heat of the moment, with time ticking away, its amazing what
racesthroughyourmindasyouattempttoworkthroughthegameinthemanneryoudeembest.

10.SavingPrinceLawrence

Sometimestheworstdecisionsaretheonesyoudidntevenknowyouweremaking.Inthefirst
episode of The Wolf Among Us Faith Bigby and Snow have to choose whether to head to
PrinceLawrencesapartment(totellhimofthedeathofhiswifeFaith)ortoToadsapartment(to
catchsomeonerootingthroughTheWoodmansapartmentabove)first.Itseems quiteasimple
choice (you do visit both areas eventually anyway) but which one you visit first has huge
repercussions.IfyouarriveatLawrencesapartmentsecond(asin,aftergoingtoseeToad),youll
findhimonthebrinkofdeath,onlyabletoutterafewwordsbeforepassing.However,headingto
Lawrencesfirstgivesyoutheopportunitytosavehislife;hewillsimplyplaydeadwhilstanintruder
searches his home. Saving him in Episode One means hell appear throughout the remainder of
the series, giving you a welcome ally in the games climax. Telltales choicebased gameplay has
been criticised by some for only offeringthe illusion of choice (particularly in TheWalkingDead
where the games narrative only changed slightly) but the consequences of this one seemingly
innocentchoiceinTheWolfAmongUsshowsthevastimprovementstheyintroducedinthisseries.
9.SendingColinToTheFarm
Derived from the story of the Three Little Pigs, Colin is a relatively minor character in The Wolf
AmongUs,especiallyincomparisontohismoreprominentroleinthecomicbookseries.Still,Colin
acts as one of few friends to Bigby Wolf and he injects humour intothe game with his constant
chatter.Colinsmainstoryarcrevolvesaroundhislivingstatus.WhilemostFablesarefreetolive
their lives in Fabletown, all nonhuman Fables who cannot afford to glamour themselves up
(basically, put on a permanent human costume) are shipped off to the Farm; while not a
punishment,itsreferredtoasaprisonbymostoftheFableslivingthere.Colinhasbeensentto
the Farm repeatedly (well,he is a giant,talking pig) but always manages to findhis way back to
Bigbyscouch.InEpisodeFourInSheepsClothing SnowWhite,inhernewroleasDeputy
Mayor, orders Bigby to ensure that all nonhuman Fables are sent to the Farm. Of course, that
includesColinandBigbyhastodecidewhethertolethimcontinuelivinginhisroomorruthlessly
sendhimaway.Thisisamuchsmallerchoicethanothers(itreallyonlychangesColinsappearance
inthegamesending)butdisobeyingSnowsorderstokeepBigbysroommatearoundcouldlead
tosomeinterestingdevelopmentsiftheseriescontinues.
8. HelpingFaithOut
ThetitularcharacterofEpisodeOne,FaithhasasmallbutvitalroleinTheWolfAmongUsnarrative.
Herdeathsetsallofthegameseventsintomotionandthereasonsbehindhermurderwerethe
centralmysterywhichkeptusplaying.Thatbeingsaid,weactuallyspendlittletimewithFaithin
thegame;sheonlymakesoneappearanceanditsquiteafleetingoneatthat.Still,theresplenty
oftimeforFaithtoputusthroughtheemotionalwringer.IntheHomelands,FaithwasaPrincess,
yetthetribulationsofNewYorkhaveleftherandPrinceLawrenceoutofpocket,leadingFaithto
becomeaprostitute.Strugglestoadapttolifeinthemundaneworldarearecurringthemewithin
theFablesuniverseandFaithsstoryisanothertragicexampleofthis.AfterBigbysavesFaithfrom
theWoodsmanintheseriesopeningbrawl,Bigbyquestionsheranduncoverssomeofthemany
secretsofthegame.Forexample,Faithisreluctanttodiscussheremployer,simplystatingthather
lipsaresealed.Bigbydeducesthatshesaprostituteandoffersherallofhisremainingmoneyto
coverfortheWoodsmansinabilitytopay.HerpartinglinetoBigbyYourenotasbadaseveryone
saysyouareisrewardenoughforacharacterwhoisregularlyvillainisedfortheactionshemust
taketoprotectFabletown.
7.LyingToBeast
Beauty and Beast may have the longest relationship of all the residents in Fabletown but its a
strained one, to say the least. Beauty is the first to appear in the Wolf Among Us, making a
suspicious appearance late at night outside the Woodlands. She then leaves without specifying
whatshesupto,insteadaskingBigbytotellBeasthehasntseenher.Ofcourse,Bigbyrunsinto
BeastjustafewminuteslaterandcaneitherlieortellhimthetruthaboutseeingBeauty.Either
way,thecouplesstorycontinuesinEpisodeTwoSmokeandMirrorswhereBigbylearnsthat
Beautyssecretisherjobasaclerkatahotelinordertohelppaythecouplesbills.Shewishesto
keep it a secret from Beast(who works several jobs to help pay the couples debts) to help him
keephispride.Whilebeingshownaroundthehotel(whereamurderoccurred),Beastshowsup
andaccusesBeautyofhavinganaffairwithBigby.Abrawlthenensueswhichissettledwhenthe
twobustadooropenandstumbleuponthebloodymurderscene.Theconsequencesoflyingto
Beastareactuallyabitofaletdownintheend;inEpisodeFouryourliestoBeasthaveturnedhim
cold and aggressive towards you, but if you told him the truth, Beauty will be reluctant to talk
instead.Still,thegamesexplorationofoneofFablesmostwellknowncouplesisacrowdpleaser
and it underlines just how well the Fables universe takes classic characters and stories
beforetwistingthemontheirhead.
6.SendingToadToTheFarm
WevealreadytouchedontheFarmandhowcertainFablesviewitasaprisonwithColinsstory
butToadandhissonTJshowtheplightofnonhumanFablesfarbetter.WhileColinescapesfrom
theFarmseeminglyjusttoberebellious,Toaddesperatelywantstoearnthemoneysoheandhis
son can continue to live as free men inNew York. Toad has a pretty prominent role in The Wolf
Among Us; hes actually the first character Bigby interacts with in the series. Hes also a pretty
unfortunatecharacter:hegetsroughedupwithTweedledum,hissondiscoverssomeonedisposing
ofabodywhilstswimmingintheriver,hiscargetsdestroyeditssafetosaythattheguycould
usesomeluck.Unfortunately,hedoesntgetany.BigbycanattempttointerveneinToadsforced
removalbygivinghimmoney(takenfromCrane)tobuyaglamour.Hecanalsopromisetospeak
toSnowWhiteaboutbeingmorelenientwithhernewrules;eitherpathstillresultsinToadandTJ
beingremovedtotheFarmattheendoftheseriesthough.Toaddoesntgoquietlythough;ifColin
doesntjoinhimandhisson,hellangrilyconfronttheSheriffaboutwhereheis,highlightingsome
ofthemorehypocriticaldecisionsyoucanmakeasBigbyWolf.Asafinalkickintheteethyoucan
refusetogiveSnowWhiteagiftfromTJ(easilyoneofthesweetestcharactersinTelltalesarsenal),
thoughsurelyeventheBigBadWolfisincapableofmakingsuchamonstrousdecision.
5.KillingTweedledum
TheclimaxofEpisodeThreeACrookedMileisoneofthemostexcitingmomentsinTheWolf
AmongUs.ThecharacterofBloodyMaryisintroducedandBigbyispushedtohislimitsbyherand
her two henchmen Tweedledum and Tweedledee. Bigby has to deal with the two Tweedles
constantlythroughouttheseriesanditallcomestoaheadhere.Havingbeenroughedupbytheir
guns,Bigbygoesintofullwolfmode,unleashinghisprimalfuryonbothTweedlesinretaliation.
ThisisthefirsttimethattheplayercanchoosetohaveBigbykillsomeone;hegrabsTweedledum
bythethroatandtheplayerhastochoosewhetherhedeservestodie,justlikeaRomanEmperor
ofold.ChoosingtokillhimseesBigbybrutallyripoutDumsthroatandleavehimfordead,whereas
if you spare him hell simply slump to the ground and presumably flee with his brother. The
latterhimmeanshellshowupin thegamesfinalepisode,though hehasnospeakinglines (he
wasamanoffewwordsanyway).ThisisakeymomentinBigbysdevelopment;theTweedleshave
beenathorninhissidethroughoutthegamebutifhekillsDum,hesmurderingoneoftheFables
hesemployedtoprotect.Itsadecisionthatcanonlybedecidedbytheplayerspersonalviewon
BigbysroleasSheriff;isheamanwishingtoseekrevengeaswellasjusticeordoeshestillabide
byhonorandduty?Whilewemaynotseealltheconsequencesfromthesekeymomentsinthe
games narrative, in our own minds this incident changes the way we view Bigby and his role in
Fabletown.
4.RoughingUpTheSuspect
At the end of Episode One, Bigby takes either The Woodsman or Tweedledee into custody to
interrogatethemaboutFaithsmurder.InEpisodeTwo,youtakecontrolofBigbyashehandlesthis
investigationanditsuptoyouhowroughyouwanttobewithyourcaptive.Youcanplaygoodcop,
bad cop with Bluebeard (who will eventually start beating on the suspect anyway, stating that
yourebeingtoonice)oryoucanunleashyourinnerbeastandstartrainingdownonhimyourself.
IthasalotincommonwithGrandTheftAutoVsinfamoustorturescene,althoughitneverquite
goestothoseextremes;theworstyoucandotoTweedledeeforexample,istoburnhimwithhis
owncigar.Youractionsduringthisscenehavesomeprettybigrepercussions.Crane,Mayoratthe
time,willreactaccordinglytohowyoutreatthesuspectandBigby,inhisfury,canevengrabhis
superiorandthreatenhimtoo.Duringthegamesfinalshowdown,theCrookedMancanuseyour
brutalquestioningtacticsasaweapontoundermineyourauthority,makingyoulookfoolishand
underminingyourcaseagainsthim.
3.KillingGeorgie
TheresnotmanynicethingsyoucansayaboutGeorgie;hesabitofarotter.Owneroftheseedy
Pudding&Pie,hehasseveralappearancesthroughoutTheWolfAmongUsasBigbyattemptsto
solvethemurdersofFaithandLily.Hesreluctanttocooperateandclearlyhasnoillfeelingsabout
runningaprostitutionringusingenslavedwomen.Italsoturnsoutthatheisthemurdererinthe
gamesstory,althoughhewasactingontheCrookedMansorders.Followingthemassbrawlthat
opensEpisodeFive,BigbymortallywoundsGeorgiebeforechasinghimbacktothePuddingand
Pie. Here, Georges crimes are laid out in detail (although he refuses to accept responsibility for
them).HealsotriestotrickBigbyintokillingVivian(theoriginalGirlwiththeRibbonwhosmagic
wasusedtoenslaveallthegirls)beforeshecommitssuicide.ViviansdeathfinallydefeatsGeorgie
andhecollapsesinaheap.BigbyattemptstotakehiminbutGeorgeadmitshesdonefor.Heasks
Bigbytogivehimaquickandmercifuldeath;ofcourse,thisisleftuptotheplayer.Itdoesnthave
anyimpactonthegamebut,again,itsallaboutdevelopingBigbyscharacter.Ishethesortofman
toleaveaFabletosuffer?ShouldhegiveGeorgieaneasydeathdespitehismanycrimes?Allof
thesethingshavetobethoughtuponwithinashortspaceoftimebeforemakingthischoice;its
prettyintense.
2.PunishingTheCrookedMan
TheCrookedManisfirstmentionedinEpisodeTwo(andonlythroughchatterwithsomecharacters)
buthessomewhatofamasterpuppeteerinFabletown.OriginallythoughtofbyBigbyandSnow
asaloanshark,TheCrookedManhasseveralillegaloperationsalloverFabletownandprofitsfrom
slavery, violence and oppression. He finally appears during the climax of Episode Four but only
brieflyaspartofthecliffhangerending.Bigbysmissiontobringhimtojusticeisthesolefocusof
EpisodeFivethoughandtheresseveraloutcomes.Bigbycankillhimwithouttakinghiminfora
trial(thismakesthegatheredFabletowncommunitydeemBigbyamonster)orhecanarresthim
andescorthimtotheWitchingWellwhereatrialtakesplace.Here,youractionsfromacrossthe
gamearelaidoutandusedasweaponseitherinyourfavororagainstyou.Nearlyeverycharacter
inthegameispresentandtheywillspeakoutinfavourofBigbyandSnow(ifyouvetreatedthem
fairly)ortheywilluseyourcruelactionstoboosttheCrookedManscase.Eitherway,theCrooked
ManwinsthecrowdoverbysuggestingthatFableswouldnthavetoturntohimiftheFabletown
governmentmadelifebetter.Thankfully,Narissa(TheLittleMermaid),oneofGeorgiesslavesnow
free from her spell, arrives to deliver the final evidence which condemns the Crooked Man; she
heardhimgivetheordertoexecuteFaithandLily.TheCrookedManspunishmentthenfollows;
youcanpermanentlytransformhimintoacrowandlockhimawayintheBusinessOffice;Bigby
can outright kill him by tearing his head off; or you can throw him down the Witching Well.
Whichever way you choose to end the Crooked Mans crime spree, its a hugely satisfying
conclusiontotheseries.Bringingbackallyourpreviouschoicesandusingthemasawaytocriticise
thestoryyouvecreatedisaneattouchandtheCrookedManisanengagingvillainwhoperhaps
could have had more screentime. At the very least, it makes you regret some of your earlier
decisionsandthatsaninterestingfeelingtoundergoinachoicedrivengame.
1.BurningGreenleafsTree
TheFablesuniverseishugelyexciting(goandreadthecomicsifyouhaventalready);itstakeon
wellknowncharactersprovidessomeinterestingscenariosanddilemmas.Wevealreadytouched
onthestrugglesthatFableswentthroughtoadapttomundanelifebuttheresonelastscenein
The Wolf Among Us which creates a truly harrowing picture of the hardships Fables are going
throughinNewYork.Aroguewitch,AuntyGreenleafcreatesillegalglamoursforFableswhocant
affordtheofficialversionsfromtheFabletowngovernment.Sheuseshertreetodothis;amagical
tree from the Homelands whose wood can be used to create such things. As seen in the Wolf
AmongUs,theseglamoursareusedfornefariouspurposes(likedisguisingatrollasSnowWhite)
soitmakessensefortheFabletowngovernmenttotryandlimittheiruse.Still,asGreenleafpoints
out,itsaformofincomefortheWitchandwithoutit,shemightnotbeabletosurvive.Plus,shes
fulfillinganeededservicewithinthecommunity;theplightofToadclearlyshowsthatthereare
Fables out there who want glamours but cannot afford them. Still, Snow White recognises the
dangerofthetreeandtellsBigbytoburnit,showingthedisconnectbetweentheDeputyMayor
andherpeople.ItsleftuptotheplayerwhethertodestroytheWitchsonlymeansofincomeor
not;essentiallyruininghernewlife.Ofcourse,wealsowanttokeepSnowinourgoodbookstoo,
soitsatoughdecisiontosaytheleast.Inhindsight,burningthetreegrantstheCrookedMana
powerful ally during his trial too; Greenleaf is quick to criticise our heroes and portray them as
monsters in front of the community. Its these tough choices and life or death scenarios that
allowedTheWolfAmongUstocaptureourimaginationsandcreateanexperiencethatsarguably
evenbetterthanTheWalkingDead.Asmostofhistorysgreatestleadershavediscovered;itsnear
impossible to please all of the people all of the time, and Bigby Wolfs early tales are a clear
exampleofthis.
