LOCAL FIRMS GEARING UP TO TAP INTO GROWING GREEN
BUILDING MARKET IN CHINA
Firms hope local experience in greening Singapore will give them an advantage in
breaking into Chinese green building market

A delegation of thirteen Singapore firms, jointly led by the Building and
Construction Authority (BCA) and the Singapore Green Building Council (SGBC), is
headed to China where they hope their green building experience in Singapore will help
them gain headway into the rapidly growing green building market there. The almost 50-
strong delegation comprises companies that provide products and services related to
green building technologies and sustainable urban solutions in Singapore. They will
attend the Sixth International Conference on Intelligent, Green and Energy-Efficient
Building & New Technologies and Products Expo (IGEBC) in Beijing.

2 The SGBC, supported by IE Singapore and BCA, will also be setting up a
Singapore Green Pavilion at the Exhibition under the theme Greening Singapore
Beyond Garden City, to showcase Singapores green building initiatives and the
capabilities of the Singapore firms. The Exhibition will be held from 29
th
to 31
st
March
2010 and is expected to attract close to 10,000 professionals this year, including
government officials, developers and consultants.

3 Singapore has a good reputation as a Garden City transforming into a city that is
also more environmentally sustainable, said Mr Choo Whatt Bin, BCAs Executive
Director for Research and International Development. We hope to ride on that
reputation and our experiences in the journey of going green, to help our Singapore firms
make headway in the Chinese market.

4 Chinas construction activity is currently the highest in the world. At 2 billion
square metres of floor area annually, it accounts for nearly half of all construction
globally. With the Chinese governments strong commitment to the environmental
sustainability and a strong emphasis on green building throughout major urban areas in
China, the green building market will be worth $55 billion by 2012 and is expected to
reach $200 billion by 2020.
5 This is a huge overseas market that local firms can tap on to grow their
businesses beyond Singapore, said Mr Lee Chuan Seng, President of the Singapore
Green Building Council. But more importantly, we hope such increased interaction will
help spur the growth of green buildings, and help bring about more green building-
related products and services in both Singapore and China. Such a development will
surely bring about greater synergy in the global green building market, with more
Singaporean firms taking a share of the pie.

6 Besides attending the Conference and Exhibition, SGBC and BCA have also
arranged for the Singapore firms to meet up with Chinese developers to explore
opportunities for collaboration. (See Annex A for profiles of local firms in the Singapore
delegation.)

7 This is also the first time a Singapore Green Pavilion is showcased overseas,
after its debut at the International Green Building Conference in Singapore last year. If
such Private-Public partnerships prove successful, SGBC and BCA may consider
organizing more of such business mission missions in the future.

8 Following the Beijing event, several of the firms in the delegation will embark on
another BCA-led mission trip to Shanghai, and to Nanjing to visit and meet with
developers at the Nanjing Eco High-Tech Island.

Issued by the Singapore Green Building Council and the Building and
Construction Authority on 24 March 2010

About SGBC
The inauguration of the Singapore Green Building Council (SGBC) opens a significant
chapter in Singapores commitment towards creating a sustainable built environment. It
is an industry-led initiative which works towards convergence of all stakeholders in green
building on a common resource- and knowledge-base.

SGBCs mission is to propel Singapores building and construction industry towards
environmental sustainability by promoting green building design, practices and
technologies; integrating green building initiatives into mainstream design, construction
and operation of buildings; as well as enhancing capacity and professionalism to support
wider adoption of green building development and practices in Singapore.

Its work will complement the governments efforts to accelerate the greening of
Singapores buildings by 2030, while at the same time provide opportunities to share
knowledge with other countries in its climatic zone.

The SGBC membership is open to developers, contractors, manufacturers/suppliers,
engineers, architects, institutions/associations, agencies and individuals concerned with
or interested in transforming Singapores built environment towards a sustainable future.

About IGEBC
The conference and exhibition has been a major national event on green building in
China since its inauguration in 2004. It is initiated by the Chinese Ministry of Housing and
Urban-Rural Development, and is supported by various Chinese Ministries and foreign
organizations, including the World Green Building Council.

Participation at this professionals-only exhibition has been close to 8,000 people since its
inauguration, and despite the global financial crisis, last year's IGEBC in March 2009
attracted close to 5000 attendees.

END
FACTSHEET

Singapores IGEBC Involvement
Singapore has the reputation of being a Garden City, including in China. However,
going green is much more than having a lot of greenery. Over the years, Singapore has
progressed beyond garden city and is on its way to becoming an environmentally
responsible city.

This achievement is made possible by the strong synergy built between government
agencies, industry associations and private companies in Singapore. The collaborative
efforts from these parties aim to propel Singapores building and construction industry
towards environmental sustainability and accelerate the greening of the built
environment.

This spirit of private-public sector collaboration is evidenced in the Beijing event through
the Singapore Green Pavilion, which seeks to promote Singapore as an innovative and
leading user of green building technologies. A model of the Zero Energy Building, Asias
first retro-fitted zero-energy building, will be featured at the pavilion.

President of the Singapore Green Building Council, Er Lee Chuan Seng will also be
presenting at the events Plenary Session, while five other experts from Singapore will
present papers ranging from Green Districts to green building design at various other
technical sessions at the Conference.

Chinas Green Building Market
The Chinese government has rapidly elevated the importance of green building
throughout major urban areas in China and demonstrated its commitment to the green
cause. It will be spending SGD 630 million between 2011 and 2015 to clean up and
reduce carbon emission, more than twice the spending of SGD 280 million between
2006 and 2010.

China constructs more than 2 billon square meters of floor area annually, nearly half of
the global construction and higher than any other country in the world. The initial cost of
green building is about 5% more than that of a typical building, and is offset by long-term
energy efficiency savings. It is estimated that the market for efficient buildings and
upgrades will be worth over $55 billion by 2012, and the investment in China green
building market will reach $ 200 billion by 2020. This represents a big market that
Singapore firms have potential to tap into.
