CYBER CRIME
With the turn of the new millinium we saw the rise of personal computers
and laptops, the life as we know it has changed, with every aspect of our
everyday life being dictated by the electronic devices mainly these pcs and
laptops. The dawn of the 21
st
centuary also saw the birth of a new
revolutionary invention called the internet which made the world as
much smaller place to live in. This like everything else has its own pros
and cons.
Today I would like to discuss about the shady part of this is new fad of
ours The Cybercrime which is defined as The offences that are
committed against an individual or a group of individuals with a motive
to intentionally harm the reputation of victim or cause physical/mental
harm to the victim directly or indirectly, using modern telecommunication
networks such as internet and mobile phones. These crimes include
activities like spam, fraud, harrassment, threat, cyber warfare, computer
viruses, denial of service attacks, malware, cyber stalking, identity theft,
information warfare and phishings scams. These crimes often mirror the
ones in the real world into the virtual world. These activities like
espionage and financial thefts have been garnering attention from the
movies and literature industries. These have hence widened the horizons
of our knowledge of cybercrime, thus making us realise the severity of
these offences and know for a fact that these can happen to us too and
many of us in our day to day life may have experienced these crimes in one
form or other, like for example the time you got a hate comment from a
stranger in a chat room because of racial backgrounds that you have
brushed off as an isolated incident. Little do we realise that we are not
being a bigger man/woman here by letting these incidents slip but instead
we are encouraging these type of activities on other people on the net.
Thus we have started a huge chain of consequences by not reporting the
incident. Hence rendering the cyber world a danger place for our future
generation. Other cyber crimes such as phising, fraud and identity fraud
are committeed by these cyberbullies on unsuspecting and nave people.
All these illegal activities have rendered the cyberworld as dangerous as
the real world. There many organisations established around the world
dedicated to fight these growing cybercrime syndicate. There are many
developments in the cyber world like the recent popularity of the cyber
currency called the Bitcoins which are decentralised cyber currency
which makes the life of cyber crime fighting organisations harder as the
cyber crime fighting organisationsharder as these cybercurrency can not be
tracked hence making it harder to track the cyber criminals. Hence I
would like to conclude by saying that these cyber crimes are as real as as
any other crime in real world and just like any other crimes it can not be
totally erradicated and can only be minimised by taking precautionary
measures in our side to prevent ourselves from becoming the victims.

Thank You .
