TYPES OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS

OBJECTIVES
- To observe several important types of chemical reactions and to write eqations for these reactions!
T"EO#$
Chemical reactions can be divided into several classes each havin% similar characteristics! These
different types of reactions will be discssed in %reater detail thro%hot the boo&! $o will find that almost
every reaction yo see can fall into one of these cate%ories' so ma&e sre that yo nderstand them! The %eneral
form of a synthesis reaction is ( ) B * (B! Synthesis reactions +pt thin%s to%ether+! These are the opposite of
synthesis reactions' with the format (B * ( ) B! ,ecomposition reactions +ta&e thin%s apart+! Jst as synthesis
reactions can only form one prodct' decomposition reactions can only start with one reactant! Componds that
are nstable will decompose qic&ly withot otside assistance! Sin%le replacement reactions' also called sin%le
displacement' swap one component with another' in the format (B ) C * (C ) B! ,oble replacement
reactions' also &nown as +doble displacement reactions+' two componds swap components' in the format (B
) C, * (, ) CB!

(s we condcted or e1periment' we performed and observed different types of chemical reactions!
Combination or synthesis reaction is the first part of or e1periment! 2e condcted three varios e1periments!
The first e1periment is represented by the eqation 3C4s5 ) O3 4%5 * 3CO4s5 6Copper ) O1y%en * Copper 4II5
O1ide7! The second e1periment is represented by the eqation 38%4s5 ) O3 4%5 * 38%O 68a%nesim ) O1y%en

* 9inc Slfide7! ,ecomposition reaction is the second part of or e1periment! In this reaction' we condcted
one e1periment! The e1periment is represented by the eqation C:";3O: 4s5 * :C4s5 ) :"3O4l5! Sin%le
replacement<displacement is the third part of or e1periment! 2e condcted two varios e1periments! The first
e1periment is represented by the eqation /e4s5 ) CSO= 4l5 * /eSO= 4l5 ) C4s5 6Iron ) Copper 4II5 Slfate * Iron

,oble replacement<displacement is the last part of or e1periment! In this reaction' we condcted three
e1periments! The first e1periment is represented by the eqation .aCl4aq5 ) (%.O> 4aq5 * .a.O> 4aq5 ) (%Cl! The
second e1periment is represented by the eqation BaCl3 ) "3SO= * BaSO= ) 3"Cl! The third e1periment is
represented by the eqation ?bCl3 ) @3CrO= * ?bCrO= ) 3@Cl!

2e' therefore conclde that this laboratory e1periment illstrated how each &ind of chemical reaction
contrasts and inflences involved in the reactions! ,rin% this e1ploration' we learned abot for &inds of
chemical reactions! These inclde' bt are not limited toA combination<synthesis' decomposition' sin%le
replacement<displacement' and doble replacement<displacement! 2e also learned how cations react with
anions and what prodcts are prodced in accordance to the types of chemical reactions! 2e also reinforced or
&nowled%e of when a chemical reaction occr sin% balancin% eqations and componds!
