Mary Langford, Counselor

Theres a brief speech I give to each
counsel i ng cl i ent at our r st
me e t i n g . I e mp h a s i z e my
commitment to condentiality. I let
them know it is my habit and policy to pray for
everyone I work with. And I say that most people who
come for counseling want a change to take place, but
that making a change is sometimes hard work. We
want a relationship to be di"erent, but we dont want
to be the one to change. We want other folks to stop
their annoying or problematic behaviors. If they would
just do that, everything would be ne. It is one of the
strange quirks of human beings that we resist change,
even if we know it would be a good thing.

We need to take a clue from the world of nature.
Seasons change, as do cloud formations. No two
sunrises or sunsets are alike. Leaves go from green to
golden and drop away. Ah, and think of the
transformation that takes place when the caterpillar
becomes a buttery! And what of the plant which
begins as a seed, and must give up itself in order to
produce a fruit, a ower or a tree.

How many times our Lord used examples from nature
when He was teaching about dying to self, opening
oneself to the changes and growth which God intends
in our lives. He didnt mean us to be chameleons or to
shift with every wind that blows, but I believe He
wants us to know that His work in us will involve
changes from the inside out.

When I work with couples who are at odds, I listen
rst to their list of complaints against each other.
Then often I will ask each one to go home and make a
list of things they themselves could do that might
possibly help the relationship. What I know is that if
even one person behaves di"erently, the other one will
very likely begin to respond in a new way.

God made us to change. He means us to grow
physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually. If we
insist on clinging to our old ine"ective habits,
behaviors and reactions, we are cheating ourselves
out of the rich relationships He desires for us. Change
is hard work and sometimes painful, but if we place
ourselves in the hands of the Master Potter, He will
reshape us into what He wants us to be.

Bert Langley, Director of
Missions
Marilyn vos Savant, columnist,
author, and lecturer, wrote,
Being defeated is often a
temporary condition. Giving up is what makes it
permanent. The Apostle Paul wrote, Let us not
become weary in doing good, for at the proper time
we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. (Galatians
6:9) The di"erence between success and failure is
often measured by a few minutes. If only we had
given it one more try. Thomas A. Edison, the perfect
example of one unwilling to give up, wrote, Our
greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain
way to succeed is always to try just one more time.
Pauls encouragement was to continue to do good.
In the second century, an anonymous letter was
written describing the Christians of that day. The
following is an excerpt from that letter:
They love every one, but are persecuted by all.
They are unknown and condemned; they are put to
death and gain life. They are poor and yet make many
rich. They are short of everything and yet have plenty
of all things. They are dishonored and yet gain glory
through dishonor.
Their names are blackened and yet they are
cleared. They are mocked and bless in return. They
are treated outrageously and behave respectfully to
others. When they do good, they are punished as
evildoers; when punished, they rejoice as if being
given new life. They are attacked by Jews as aliens,
and are persecuted by Greeks; yet those who hate
them cannot give any reason for their hostility.
Although it may appear the Christian is losing the
battle, remember, we will reap a harvest (at the
proper time) if we do not give up. During the forty-
two plus years of my ministry, I have seen the harvest
reaped by those who were unwilling to give up. Just
recently I listened to a mom who was told by her
friends to give up on a rebellious son, but she refused
to do so. Today that son is walking with Christ and
caring for his mom. What a blessing to know them
both! Many Christians have lived long enough to see
the harvest because they were unwilling to give up.
Sir Winston Churchill said, Never, never, never, never
give up. This is a great day to DO SOMETHING
good. Dont give up. Lets try one more time. The
harvest is coming!
