16q
Before the seated krtans in the morning and evening are
recited the Sanskrit prayers beginning with Vande ham
r-Guro.
After the class in the morning and evening Hari Haraye
nama Ka is sung.
The songs sung during the seated krtans, which follow the
morning and evning parikrams, are organised by theme
in this order: Guru, Pacha Tattva, Vaiava, Niti, Gaura,
Ka, Hari-nm.
The songs sung for Guru and the Pacha Tattva are the same
each day. In the morning: Sasra-dvnala-lha-loka, r-
Ka-Chaitanya-Prabhu jve day kari, and Bhaja bhaja re mr
mana ati manda. In the evening: r-Guru-charaa-padma and
r-Ka-Chaitanya-Prabhu day kara more.
For the other categories, songs may be chosen on a daily
basis. For example, one may sing hkura Vaiava-gaa for
the Vaiava in the morning and Ohe Vaiava hkura in
the evening.
In the evening, prior to the final Hari-nm krtan,
Sujanrvuda-rdhita-pda-yugam and the r r Prema-dhma-
deva-stotram are sung. Each night ten verses from the r r
Prema-dhma-deva-stotram are sung. The chanting starts with
verse one on Saturdays and concludes with the hnal verses
of the text on Fridays.
1;o
On the appearance days of the Gurus in our lineage, and
on other special occasions, Ka haite Chaturmukha is sung.
This song is often begun from verse hve or six.
On the appearance days of r Kas Ll-avatrs, the r
Davatra-stotram is sung.
On the disappearance days of Gurus from our lineage or
other worshippable Vaiavas, Ye nilo prema-dhana is sung,
and Ei bra karu kara may also be sung.
On Harivsar Tithi, whether it occurs on an Ekda or a
Mahdvda, r-Hari-vsare Hari-krtana-vidhna is sung
in the morning and uddha-bhakata-charaa-reu is sung in
the evening.
During the month of Krtik, He Deva Bhavanta vande and
Rdhe jaya jaya Mdhava-dayite are sung.
kars (lit. ornaments) may be sung during or after songs.
Throughout this book kars have been included in songs in
bold text that is surrounded by brackets. In addition to the
kars that are specihc to particular songs, general kars that
are thematically appropriate and not excessive may be sung.
Listed below are some simple standard kars used to con-
clude most songs. They are sung according to theme:
r Guru: jaya gurudeva!
Vaiava: jaya vaiava thkur!

1;1
Niti: dayl niti!
Gaura: jaya gaurahari!
In addition to these concluding kars, other kars are often
added prior to them after a song is completed. The following
is a short list of examples which simply indicates the style
and variety of kars that are sung from time to time:

and class.
According to time, place, and circumstance, the jays recited
are adjusted.
Jay is given to the Deities who are being worshipped at a
particular assembly.

parikram being performed.
Tadya Magal rati k jay!
Tadya Mdhyhna Bhog rati k jay!
Tadya Sandhy rati k jay!
Tadya Mandir Parikram k jay!
Tadya Tulas Parikram k jay!
(Tadya means His or Their, and in this context implies.
The Deities magal rati or something similar. Tadya is
also used throughout the scriptures as a term for things
which are especially dear to the Lord and ht to be offered
special worship.)

1;

them.
On Ekda:
r Harivsar Tithi k jay!
r Ekda Upavs Plankr Bhakta-vnda k jay!
On the appearance day of the Lord or a Vaiava:
Tadya ubha virbhv Tithi Var k jay!
On the disappearance day of a Vaiava:

r Nabadwp Dhm Parikramr Adhivs Mahotsav k jay!
r Jagannth Mirer nandotsav k jay!
Jay is given to the ram, Temple, or place in which worship
is taking place.
1;6
There are no hard and fast rules about the order and number
of jays to be given, though enlongated recitations praising
inessential or obscure elements are undesireable.
The following verses are recited before honouring prasdam:
mahprasde govinde nma-brahmai vaiave
svalpa-puya-vat rjan vivso naiva yyate
O king, one whose fortune is meagre never develops faith
in mahprasd, Govinda, the Holy Name, or the Vaiavas.

The body is a net of illusion, and the material senses
are ones enemies; they throw the soul into the ocean of
mundanity. Among the senses, the tongue is the most vora-
cious and wicked. It is very difhcult to conquer the tongue
in this world.

1;;
O brothers! Ka is very merciful: to conquer the tongue
He has given us His remnants! Accept this nectarean food,
sing the glories of Rdh-Ka, and with love call out,
Chaitanya! Niti!

(dayl niti chaitanya bale preme bhare ka re)
(niti gaura haribol!)
Call with love! Call with love: Dayl Niti Chaitanya! Niti!
Gaura! Hari!
(rla Bhakti Vinod hkur)
Following this recitation jay is given, and then prasdam is
honoured while chanting Hari-nm.
On Harivsar-tithis (days on which devotees fast from
grains) the song beginning Bhi re! arra avidy-jla is not
customarily sung because it mentions grain prasdam
(anna).
