EDITORS NOTE

middle east

fter a long, quiet and reflective month, the team at Landscape ME are
looking back at the achievements of both Middle Eastern businesses and
international companies. We are also looking forward to future projects
and the positive impact and development that each of them bring.

august 2014

First up we take a look at Luca Curci architects studio who designed a

new landmark for the United Arab Emirates skyline-an innovative project
based on the concept of Organic Cities. The aim is to create a common place where
people can live, meet, learn, work and socialise.
Continuing this theme of bringing people together is a residential project on Cha-Am
beach, Petchaburi, Thailand-Baan San Kraam by Sanitas Studio. The challenge for
Sanitas was to provide a landscape design allowing all residents to feel close to the beach
as only 10 per cent of its extensive area was near the sea. Rising to the challenge, the
firm created seven clusters of buildings each with their own unique seascape character.

From one beach to The Beach, one of the most recent and exciting developments to be
unveiled in Dubai, located between Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR) and the public
beach. We take a look at how Cracknell designed this entertainment, leisure and retail
development on page 18.
From past achievements to future projects, the International Centre for Biosaline
Agriculture has created an educational landscape at its headquarters in Al-Ruwayyah.
The landscape philosophy is to create an educational and cultural entity which is
completely unique. Turn to page 30 for more.
Congratulations are in order for BET architects in collaboration with Ethiopia Shne &
Partner who have won the international design competition for Ethiopian Airlines New
Headquarters in Addis Ababa.
We profile Floors and Decks, a wooden flooring business catering offering a wide variety
of products from Europe and Japan for the MENA Region. On the European scene, we
go behind a new urban quarter-Funenpark-a project just east of Amsterdams inner city
which features sixteen residential blocks.

ubai Municipality public parks

department has announced that the
department is planning to restructure
all major parks in the emirate to
make them more accessible and
friendly for disabled people. The project will start in
October and take two years to complete.
Initially the project will be implemented in Al
Mamzar Beach Park and Jumeirah Beach Park
followed by other major parks.

Eng. Hussein Lootah Director General of Dubai

The move comes as part of civic bodys keenness

to achieve the strategic goal of Dubai Government
to be one of the most friendly cities in the world
for people with special needs by 2020 through
the initiative My Community A City for
Everyone launched by HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin

Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council.
Hussain Nasser Lootah, the director general of
Dubai Municipality said It will cover all major
public and residential parks, and the move is

aimed at giving disabled children a place to play

to help them mingle with the society members in
all fields of life.
Dubai Municipality has paid great attention
to special needs by setting requirements for
Dubais buildings and public facilities, including
parks, streets and markets, as well as by holding
activities that aim to reach out to and integrate
people with special needs, Lootah said.
Dubai Municipality is keen to support
constructive humanitarian initiatives in different
fields and it has joined the hands with hundreds
of institutions both locally and globally to help
people have better living conditions, he said.
All parks would ultimately have playing

experience that blends luxurious lifestyle
amenities with an ultra-modern business
environment. The commercial project
brings to Jeddah the world-class Emaar

as multi-sport surfaces gives TigerTurf
the ability to cater for a host of diverse
requirements. TigerTurf maintains a
commitment to the creation of a wide
range of products so that every design
is ideal for a specific application.

TigerTurf selects the most advanced

in yarn extrusion to create a full
range of synthetic turf for a wealth
of sports, education, and leisure
facilities. This commitment to quality
is supported by a network of testing
houses and the organisations very own

with the latest equipment. A series of
extensive testing means every surface
is not only measured on its ability to
perform under various criteria but
it is also tested for its ability to stand
up to extreme weather conditions and
ultraviolet UVA and UVB radiation,
which can have the potential to damage
synthetic surfaces in countries which
experience high levels of exposure.

Across its landscaping range, Finesse

is the most popular product. It
combines varied green tones as well
as a brown roots layer to boast a
strikingly natural appearance. With a
natural feel to match its natural look,
Finesse is designed to give a freshly
mowed effect and is best suited for
medium to light traffic use.

By guaranteeing a quality surface,

TigerTurfs extensive range of sports
surfaces can ensure fewer fixture
cancellations, higher usage, and
increased participation levels when
compared with natural turf. Further
benefits including reduced water
usage, little or no requirement for
chemical spraying, and no need for
mowing, reseeding, or fertilisers which
means sports Facilities Managers can
be assured of a lower cost per playing
hour all year round.

Tested to the high performance and

safety standards laid out by sportsspecific governing bodies, TigerTurfs
synthetic turf systems are backed
by accreditation from organisations
ranging from FIFA, to the International
Rugby Board (IRB), Rugby Football
League (RFL), International Hockey
Federation (FIH), Gaelic Athletic
Association (GAA), and European
Standards (EN).
To meet the needs of footballers in the
community and at a professional level,
TigerTurfs Soccer Real range offers
a choice of two third generation (3G)
systems, each of which is part-filled with
rubber and sand to maximise stability
and longevity. Soccer Real 60XQ and
Soccer Real 50XQ boast a 60mm and
50mm pile height respectively, and
have been designed to offer a safe and
authentic ball/surface and player/
surface interaction, which is a critical
requirement for football and rugby
clubs at all levels.
For those facilities with a need for multi
sports surfaces, TigerTurf has also
developed its Total Turf range, which
boasts a versatile line-up of features
and benefits for a wide range of outdoor

activities. Each offering a different

pile height to satisfy the varying needs
of professional and community level
sportspeople, the 3G Total Turf 65XQ,
Total Turf 60XQ, and Total Turf 40XQ
consist of two unique profiled fibres, with
a sand and rubber infill, which combine
to maintain a stable surface
Meeting Customer Needs
TigerTurf creates surfaces for elite sport,
school playgrounds and educational
establishments, clubs, commercial
landscaping applications and domestic
gardening and leisure landscaping. The
businesss primary route to market is
via the links paved by its contracting
partners globally, which means that
whilst the company does not sell its
products directly to the end-user, it
can assure them of the highest quality
installation and maintenance.
Investors in sports surfaces can range
from elite level sports clubs, to smaller
scale community facilities. Notably,
TigerTurf pitches have been installed
at Scottish Premier League (SPL) club,
Hamilton Academical FCs New Douglas
Park stadium and at Nottingham Forest
FCs indoor training academy which
are both elite level clubs competing

in high divisions in their regions. As

FIFA-accredited 3G surfaces become
increasingly embraced by football clubs
at community and elite levels, it is
anticipated that the market for synthetic
sports surfaces will continue to grow
rapidly.
In the Middle East, TigerTurf recently
installed its Atomic Pro variant at the
Yas Marina F1 circuit in Abu Dhabi,
ahead of the citys Grand Prix hosting
later this year. Atomic Pro is made with
a diamond-profiled monofilament yarn,
specifically designed to feel soft and
encourage blade recovery during times
of peak footfall, which means visitors
to the globally-renowned circuit will be
able to benefit from a comfortable feel at
all times.
With the market for synthetic turf
continuing to grow globally, TigerTurf
has already identified key areas of growth
for its business. Greater emphasis on
safety standards in the education sector,
and the mounting acceptance of 3G
surfaces for elite level soccer, rugby, and
tennis, provide landscaping and sports
stakeholders with a huge opportunity
to make synthetic turf central to their
business offering.

The Beach

Located between Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR) and the public

beach, The Beach is one of the most recent and exciting developments
to be unveiled in Dubai. Covering over a 1km stretch of shoreline
between the Hilton and Sheraton Hotels, Cracknell were appointed to
design and supervise the construction of this low rise entertainment,
leisure and retail development.

nswering the Clients

(Meeras) design brief to
create a vibrant outdoor
urban environment and
offer the community
exciting recreational facilities, Cracknell
wanted to ensure full advantage
was taken of the beach front setting
and provide a well thought through
integrated design response.

18

Reflection pool, Central Plaza

The architectural design established
four distinct character zones across
the development, ranging from
recreational, centred around the
cinema building, a commercial zone
with an urban plaza as the hub, a large
elliptical plaza to the centre of the site
suitable for outdoor events, and a high
end zone with exclusive restaurants,
outdoor dining and retail outlets.

I www.landscape-me.com I August 2014

Along the length of the site the landscape

design links each of the architectural
character zones by three corridors. The
first of these is the urban street corridor
adjacent to the JBR Walk. The external
edge of The Beach now complements
the urban street character to both
sides of the existing road. This edge
is punctuated at strategic locations by
wide pedestrian access routes allowing

visitors to approach from the JBR walk

and provides connections from the street,
across the central spine (second corridor)
to the beach promenade which provides
the third of these corridors.
At the northern end of the development
the landscape to the recreational zone
is designed around the main attraction,
the indoor and outdoor cinema. The
landscape features here include a
colourful and brightly designed shaded
water play area known as the splash
pad, which is popular with children and
their families. Adjacent to the splash
pad is a permanent amphitheatre for live
performances, lawn areas for people to
picnic and children to play.
The recreational area of the promenade is
adjacent to the beach and elevated above
the sand. The beach promenade provides
an active corridor and is designed to
provide an enjoyable open space suitable
for different users groups. It provides a
wide meandering footpath adjacent to
the jogging track complete with a series
of outdoor gym areas with exercise
equipment for people to use. Steps, access
ramps, seating walls, all light in colour,
have been integrated into the level changes
down to the beach. Benoy architects have
designed the beach facility buildings,
which are situated strategically along the

20

If you were to walk from the cinema along

the central spine to the southern edge of
the development you pass through three
plazas of contrasting scale, each offering
a different experience. The first of these
is the commercial plaza. The commercial
plaza is square, with low buildings and
shaded walkways spanning across the
buildings and enclosing the space. A large
water feature commands the centre of
the square with the water reflecting both
the adjacent buildings and the olive trees
planted within the water feature itself. The
sound of water along with the dark stone
finishes of the water feature enhances
the calming atmosphere and reflective
qualities of the space. The surrounding
paving is a mixture of dark and medium
greys laid in a direction to accentuate the
orientation of the water feature within the
plaza. Seating from the restaurants spill out
into the square, offering a very convivial
space for al fresco dining.

I www.landscape-me.com I August 2014

The next area is the central plaza where

the relatively narrow and shaded arcades
open up into a large elliptical space,
bordered on one edge with buildings
facing the plaza and the other opening
out onto the hub of JBR Walk. The
eye is drawn towards what we call the
chocolate box building, on the edge
of the reflection pool as the centre point
of the space. The plaza is framed by the
steel and wood arcades adjoining the
buildings and provides shaded seating on
the edge of the plaza. The plaza level is
lowered towards the centre, to enhance
the sense of space. The plaza was kept
free of any landscape elements to ensure
maximum use for festivities and seasonal
functions.
The southern end of the development is
aimed at a higher end use, such as fashion
boutiques and signature restaurants. The
selection of dark honed stone finishes
complement the limestone facades and
copper finishes of the buildings resulting
in a sleek high end appearance.

Throughout the design phases of the

project the Cracknell team were acutely
aware that JBR and Dubai Marina
were already considered to be heavily
congested with traffic, street parking
and additional nearby construction
projects. A lot of consideration was given
to existing residents concern that The
Beach development was only going to
perpetuate this congestion. Therefore, as
well as developing open spaces, traffic
studies were conducted very early on in
the design process, with Cracknell being
influential in proposing and delivering

the aesthetic integration and construction

of the widening of the JBR walk road,
and creating a two way traffic system,
replacing the regularly congested one
way system around the development.
Provision for ample underground parking
was a key design feature for this project,
replacing and extending the previous car
park the site has been developed upon.
It is anticipated the Al Sufouh tram
system will link with the development,
which will further contribute in reducing
parking and traffic congestion in the area.
One other excellent fact that should be

Amphitheatre

noted is that through responsible design

and despite the additional offerings of
the development, the beach itself is now
actually greater in area than when the
construction work began.
Cracknell are also involved in the
refurbishment of JBR The Walk . Whilst
ensuring both The Beach and JBR retain
their own identities, the refurbishment of
JBR is just as exciting and the landscape
enhancements will contribute positively
to one of Dubais most popular residential
retail and food & beverage zones.
The Beach development was opened in
February 2014 and all the early signs
indicate that it is a hugely successful
development. Cracknell approach any new
project with one key principal in mind;
how does it make a positive contribution?
We believe The Beach is a place that people
will enjoy and it will set a new standard for
Dubai developments offering a very real
alternative to the ubiquitous indoor malls.
Cracknell looks forward to being involved
in more high quality, imaginative and fun
outdoor spaces in the future.

and mixing residential
elements with business
divisions, shopping life
with wellness areas,
cultural places with social life. The aim is
to create a common place where people
can live, meet, learn, work, socialise
and create new mixing cultures.
The project is organised in two groups:
organic buildings on the earth, and
moons on the sea. All of them are

connected and linked to each other
with roads, parks, and running streets.
The aggregations on the ground are
futuristic and have organic shapes.
The moons on the sea are divided
into three kinds: the smaller are private
residences with a private approach
from the sea and from the air. The
middle moons are hotels that can be
reached by the sea, the road and the air.
The biggest moons are residences,
hotels and private apartments.
The aggregations of buildings near
the sea have shapes conceived to live
on desert ground. The idea starts from
the nature structures that are able to
live near the sea, with sun and wind
and any kind of natural element. They
exist to be the future and evolution of

contemporary metropolis. These kind of

structures will develop the connections
between humans, during everyday
life, with thousands of common places
that will aggregate crowds, to win the
alienation of XX and XXI century cities.
The master plan has been created to be
adaptive and to evolve. It will depend
on the location of construction in
different places. The first five buildings
and five moons will have a variety of
services in the contemporary cities.
Specific attention will be paid to social
life, human connections and common
places to meet people.
The total floor area will host more than
150.000 habitants, with 50 per cent
of the lot area dedicated to green and
connections, open areas and common
grounds. More than 800.000 square
metres will be dedicated to hotels, spa,
wellness areas and 6.300.000 square
metres to shopping malls, galleries,
museums, 4.500.000 square metres to
offices and other social services.

he Dubai based Intern

Agriculture (ICBA) is
the global centre of
excellence for innovative
agriculture in saline and
marginal environments. The ICBA has
created an educational landscape at
its headquarters in Al-Ruwayyah. The
landscape philosophy is to create an
educational and cultural entity which
is unique, to optimise water use, and
inspire visitors with its architecture
and plant diversity.
To accomplish the unique landscape
philosophy, ICBA has taken the initiative to
establish an educational landscape displaying
various features uncommon to normal
landscapes, including plots of salt tolerant
grasses and plants identified after many years
of research at ICBA. These grasses are unique
and grow well at high water salinity levels,
which save the costly fresh water resources,
while the mowed grass is an excellent source
as forage. The landscape and surrounding
areas display diversity of plants (ground cover,
trees, native plants, shrubs, flowers, hedges
etc). When properly labeled with information

One of 7 sands circles showing red sand

these plants provide knowledge and

diversitya taste of Botanical Garden.
Significant efforts have been made to
design landscape architect by using
scientific means to efficiently use
irrigation water by using smart irrigation
(distribute the right amount of water
essential for landscape care) systems
(drip, bubbler, sprinkler) appropriate to
plant type. Stones of different colours
can provide the natural desert look
when combined with suitable plants.
Therefore we have the plan to add this
component to show a combination of
hardscape, xeriscape and greenscape
concepts to optimise irrigation water use.
Hardscaping is inexpensive and easy
to create and maintain. It also doesnt
require water or other types of care like
living landscaping features do. A two to
three inches protective layer (organic or
inorganic mulching) helps the soil hold
water, keep it cool, reduce evaporation,
reduce undesirable weeds, permits better
water absorption, feeds nutrients to
plants and enhances landscape diversity
and aesthetic value.

As far as UAE heritage is concerned;

an Aflaj has been added, reminiscent to
the older way of water transport. Seven

allowing all residents to feel equally close to
the beach. Starting with a nautical nostalgia

theme, Sanitas envisaged the land as
an abstract form of the ocean. It would
contain different elements of islands and
seascape such as jungle, villages and a
floating house.
Seven clusters of buildings were then
created with their own unique seascape
character. The landscape design is a
simple interpretation of the wave typology.
Having studied its form in detail, Sanitas
has developed it into three dimensional
landscape forms. This includes wave
seating, stepping stones, rock day beds
and a tree house, while water is the
landscapes key element and connects all
zones together.
Residents can experience the different
character of each area from their arrival at
Lobby Beach and then across the water to
the jungle which is surrounded by secluded
villages. Local coastal plants enhance the
natural beauty of the development and
its stunning oceanside concept, while
existing trees have been preserved to
provide welcome shaded area.
OCEAN CONCEPT
Starting with nautical nostalgia, we
envisage the land as an abstract form
of the ocean. The abstract ocean would
contain different characters of islands
and seascape; the jungle, the villages,
the floating house and the sea tide. This
would create a different atmosphere for
each cluster of buildings. Then we create
seven clusters of buildings with their
own unique seascape character, from
Lobby-beach, Fisherman Village, Modern
Jungle, Village-tree house, Village-pool,
Connecting beach and floating house.
WAVE TYPOLOGY
From the ocean concept, the water
body is the key landscape element,
which connects all zones together. We
studied the natural form of the seascape
and interpret it in a modern way. In the
overall master plan, the form of landscape
is a simplification of topography line of
the ocean and uses it as the landscape
language throughout the whole site.
The landscape design is a simple
interpretation of the wave typology. We
study the form of sea waves and develop it
in the landscape form three dimensionally.
It becomes part of the continuous seating,
continuous steps, the retaining wall and
planters. The gradient colour of the sea

36

was revealed through a gentle contour

line underneath the water. People can
experience the different character of each
area from their arrival, from the Lobby
Beach across the water to the Jungle,
which is surrounded by secluded villages.
Before arriving on the beach, there is
a large swimming pool and sunbathing
terraces.
SITE LAYOUT
At Baan San Kraam, the Ocean concept
plays the important role and connects all
zones together with one unique landscape
language of seascape. The water body,
where all activities are met, is associated
with a pathway system and sunbathing
deck and is partially adjacent to the
balconies of some units so people can
connect to the swimming pool directly.
At Baan San Kraam, Sanitas Studio has
created a series of rich details for each
zone, which become its own internal view
and provide a series of outdoor seating
areas, so people can enjoy resting in each
unique garden. From the front entrance,
the residents could arrive on the Lobbybeach with horizontal line of beachscape,
across the water to the Jungle with rustic
plants and are surrounded by secluded
villages. There is a sunken island for the
gym so people can exercise with a view
of water cascading and sun-bathe on the
roof deck.

I www.landscape-me.com I August 2014

At Baan San Kraam, Softs planting

also plays the important roles;
nurturing the space, differentiating
characteristics of each zone,
providing shade for outdoor function
space and decreasing temperature,
which is crucial in a tropical country.
The existing trees have a big impact
on the landscapes atmosphere,
especially the beach front area, where
there are stunningly mature Rain
trees, Flame trees and Tamarind trees.
The
landscape
zoning
characterized in eight zones;
1. Lobby Beach
2. Village - Tree house
3. Village - Pool
4. Fisherman Village
5. Modern Jungle
6. Connecting Beach
7. Floating House
8. Beach pool

was

CIRCULATION
At Baan San Kraam, there is a
vehicle access from the street with
front parking under trellis structure.
After arrival at the lobby, people
can choose to walk through the
main walk way, which connect to
all buildings or use the golf cartservice and access from the service
way, which run along the periphery.
The parking is located at the
entrance area and provide service
for mechanical room and garbage
room.
ZONING
From the Ocean concept, we
envisage the land as an abstract
form of the ocean. The abstract
ocean would contain different
characters of islands and seascape,
which define a collection of resting
areas.

ust east of Amsterdams inner city,

on the barren land of a former

the municipality of Amsterdam
built a new urban quarter. A quarter
that, in contrast to so many Dutch
residential neighbourhoods, with
their traditional lay-out of streets, pavements,
parking spaces, front and back gardens, was
laid out differently. A layout that asks for a
new approach of public space.
The quarter is conceived as one, continuous,
green, publically accessibly courtyard.
Within it the architecture is set: sixteen
residential blocks stand free in space
and a new long, hook-shaped apartment
block defines the courtyard in the west.
The courtyard was not to be split up in
any way, consequently, all parking areas

controversial, all private gardens had
to be omitted. Instead, every apartment
has a two metre wide wooden terrace for
private use and lots of public space to use
for walking, playing, and relaxing.

44

The maximised public space was

designed as open parkland consisting
of just three main ingredients: grass,

allow both residents and passers-by to
wander freely through the space, and
to make Funens outdoor space distinct
from its surroundings. To achieve this,
LANDLAB designed an intensive
network of paths made of two specially
designed pentagonal concrete paving
stones in three shades of grey. These
were laid down in a random fashion
which resulted in a directionless, rugged
pattern that looks like a unidirectional
stretched fishnet from above. The
widened meshes in the west result in an
oblong shaped zone of open park space,
which forms the transition zone between
the open Funenpark and the enclosed
Czar Peter neighbourhood in the west.
The meshes of the net consist of grass
planted with scattered groups of False

total) and daffodils. The transparent
crowns of the False Acacia trees go well
with the architecture and their bright

Atlas of World
Landscape
Architecture

Publisher: Braun, Slp. edition (26 May 2014)

ISBN: 9783037681664
Paperback: 512 pages
Price: 455 AED
Book Descriptions:
Landscape architecture is comprised of a wide
and multifaceted range of very diverse outdoor
space designs stern or playful, shrill or romantic,
straightforward or low key. As their main building
materials are trees and shrubs, flowers and
grass, landscape architecture projects are in a
constant state of flux. As opposed to architectural
buildings, projects in this sector are therefore
never quite finished or completely developed.
This compendium is a reference book and
source of inspiration in one, presenting around
350 current projects from around the world. They
range from expansive natural and cultivated
landscapes, via picturesque front yards and
courtyards, spectacular greened facades and
roofs, up to innovative outdoor designs that
nearly or completely make do without any
vegetation. They all share the fact that they
constitute and provide ecologically and socially
intact living spaces for human beings.
