Abel Prize 2014

The Niels Henrik Abel Memorial Fund was established on 1 January 2002, to award
the Abel Prize for outstanding scientific work in the field of mathematics.
The prize amount is 6 million NOK (about 750,000 Euro) and was awarded for the
first time on 3 June 2003.
The Abel Prize has often been described as the mathematician's "Nobel Prize"
competing in that respect with the much older Fields Medal.
Russian mathematician Yakov Grigorevich Sinai, one of the most influential
mathematicians of the 20th Century, has been chosen for the 2014 Abel Prize.
Sinai, whose work straddles both the disciplines of physics and mathematics, is
highly respected in both the communities.
He has achieved many groundbreaking results in the theory of dynamical systems,
in mathematical physics and in probability theory.
Many mathematical results are known after him: Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy, Sinais
billiards, Sinais random walk, Sinai-Ruelle-Bowen measures and Pirogov-Sinai
theory.
Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize 2013
The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prizes are given to scientists below 45 years of age,
for their outstanding scientific contributions made primarily in India during the last
5 years preceding the year of the Prize.
The SSB Prize comprises a citation, a plaque and a cash award of Rs.5,00,000/-
(Rupees five lakh only), and are given to the recipients by the Prime Minister of
India.
Eight scientist were selected for 2013 Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for science
and technology on the occasion of CSIR Foundation Day celebration.

The 2013 Norman Borlaug Award
Norman Borlaug award was created in 1972 and named in honour of Nobel Laureate
Norman E. Borlaug. It carries a cash prize of Rs 500,000, a gold medal, and a
citation.
The award recognition is conferred by a fertilizer company, Coromandel
International, for outstanding Indian scientists for their research and contributions
in the field of agriculture and environment.
Dr. Charity Mutegi, Keynayn, was awarded the 2013 Norman Borlaug award.
She is currently working at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA)
and is recognized for her work as a member of the IITA research team that has
achieved major breakthroughs by applying locally adapted and easy to use biological
tools in combating contamination with deadly aflatoxin mold that occurs in staple
crops such as maize grain or groundnut.
World Food prize
The World Food Prize is the foremost international award recognizing the
achievements of individuals who have advanced human development by improving
the quality, quantity or availability of food in the world.
The World Food Prize was established in 1986 by Norman Borlaug.
India-born plant scientist Sanjaya Rajaram has been named the winner of the USD
250,000 World Food Prize for his breakthrough achievement in increasing global
wheat production by more than 200 million tonnes following the Green Revolution.
Rajarams contributions in successfully cross-breeding winter and spring wheat
varieties, which were distinct gene pools and had been isolated from one another for
hundreds of years, led to him developing plants that have higher yields and a broad
genetic base.
Sahitya Akademi Awards
Every year since its inception in 1954, the Sahitya Akademi Award prizes to the
most outstanding books of literary merit published in any of the major Indian
languages recognised by the Akademi.
The Award is in the form of a casket containing an engraved copper-plaque, a shawl
and a cheque of 100000 rupees.

Vyas Samman
The Vyas Samman is a literary award, given out annually by the K.K. Birla
Foundation and includes a cash payout of Rs 250,000.
To be eligible for the award, the literary work must be in the Hindi language and
have been published in the past 10 years.
Eminent Hindi writer Vishwanath Tripathi been selected for the prestigious Vyas
Samman for the year 2013.
Tripathi has been chosen for the award for his memoir 'Vyomkesh Darvesh', a
biolgraphy of noted Hindi scholar Acharya Hazari Prasad Dwivedi.
Saraswati samman
The annual award of Saraswati Samman is given for outstanding prose or poetry
literary works in any Indian language listed in Schedule VIII of the Constitution of
India. The award consists of Rs 10 lakh, a citation and a plaque.
The Saraswati Samman was instituted in 1991 by the K. K. Birla Foundation.
Candidates are selected from literary works published in the previous ten years by a
panel that included scholars and former award winners.
In March 2014, it was announced that Govind Mishra, the renowned Hindi author,
will be awarded Sarawasti Samman for the year 2013 for his book Dhool Paudho Par
published in 2008.
This honour will make Mishra the second Hindi author to receive the honour after
Harivansh Rai Bachchan.
Man booker prize
Man booker prize launched in 1969 aims to promote the finest in fiction by rewarding
the best novel of the year written by a citizen of the United Kingdom, the
Commonwealth or the Republic of Ireland.
The winner of the Man Booker Prize receives 50,000 and, like all the shortlisted
authors, a cheque for 2,500 and a designer bound copy of their book.
The winner of the Man Booker Prize 2013 was Eleanor Catton's The Luminaries.
Man booker international
Worth 60,000, the prize is awarded every two years to a living author who has
published fiction either originally in English or whose work is generally available in
translation in the English language. The prize was launched in 2005.
The Man Booker International Prize is significantly different from the annual Man
Booker Prize for Fiction in that it highlights one writer's overall contribution to
fiction on the world stage. In seeking out literary excellence, the judges consider a
writer's body of work rather than a single novel.
Writers from across the globe are eligible for the biennial prize, provided their work
is available in English.
American writer Lydia Davis awarded the 2013 Man booker international prize in
recognition of a writers overall contribution to fiction.
Kannada writer U.R. Ananthamurthy, a Jnanpith awardee and regarded as one of
the most important voices of the new movement in Kannada, was in the race for
one of the worlds most prestigious literary prizes along with his Pakistani peer
Intizar Husain.
Previous winners include Albanian novelist and poet Ismail Kadare in 2005,
Nigerian writer Chinua Achebe in 2007, Alice Munro in 2009 and Philip Roth in
2011.
Pulitzer prize 2014
India-born poet Vijay Seshadri has won the prestigious 2014 Pulitzer Prize in the
poetry category for his collection of poems "3 Sections."
The 98th annual Pulitzer Prizes in Journalism, Letters, Drama and Music were
announced by Columbia University in April 2014.
Vijay Seshadri currently teaches poetry and nonfiction writing at liberal arts college
Sarah Lawrence in New York.
Padma Awards 2014
Padma Awards - one of the highest civilian Awards of the country, are conferred in
three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.
The Awards are given in various disciplines/ fields of activities, viz.- art, social work,
public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and
education, sports, civil service, etc.
Padma Vibhushan is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service.
Padma Bhushan for distinguished service of high order and Padma Shri for
distinguished service in any field.
The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year.
This year the President of India has approved conferment of 127 Padma Awards.
The list of awardees comprises of 2 Padma Vibhushan, 24 Padma Bhushan and 101
Padma Shri Awardees. 27 of the Awardees are women and the list also includes 10
persons from the category of foreigners, NRIs, PIOs and Posthumous Awardees.

C.N.R. Rao and Sachin conferred Bharat Ratna
Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian honour given for exceptional service towards
advancement of Art, Literature and Science, and in recognition of Public Service of
the highest order.
Renowned scientist C.N.R. Rao and former cricketer Sachin Tendulkar were on
February 4, 2014 conferred the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award of the
country for exceptional contribution in any field of human endeavour.
The award was presented by President Pranab Mukherjee at a brief ceremony in the
historic Durbar Hall of Rashtrapati Bhavan. Mr. Tendulkar is the first sportsperson
and sitting Rajya Sabha member to receive the prestigious award.
Prof. Rao is the Chairperson of the Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime
Minister. He is the third scientist to receive the Bharat Ratna after Nobel laureate
C.V. Raman and former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
The two join the club of 41 eminent personalities who have been honoured with
Bharat Ratna since it was instituted in 1954.
The first ever Indian to receive this award was the famous scientist,
Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman.
There is no written provision that Bharat Ratna should be awarded to Indian
citizens only. The award has been awarded to a naturalized Indian citizen, Agnes
Gonxha Bojaxhiu, better known as Mother Teresa (1980) and to two non-Indians -
Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan and Nelson Mandela (1990).
In 2009, the award was conferred on famous Indian vocalist Pandit Bhimsen
Gururaj Joshi.
Indira Gandhi prize for peace, disarmament and development
Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development is the prestigious
award accorded annually by India to individuals or organizations in recognition of
creative efforts toward promoting international peace, development and a new
international economic order; ensuring that scientific discoveries are used for the
larger good of humanity, and enlarging the scope of freedom.
The prize carries a cash award of 2.5 million Indian rupees and a citation.
In November 2013 it was announced that German Chancellor Angela Merkel will be
honoured with the price for 2013 for her exemplary leadership in Europe and the
world during the financial crisis and her stewardship of German economic growth.
Nobel prizes 2013
Nobel prizes were established by the 1895 will of Alfred Nobel. Nobel prizes are
awarded annually by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the Swedish
Academy, the Karolinska Institute, and the Norwegian Nobel Committee.
The individuals and organizations who make outstanding contributions in the fields
of chemistry, physics, literature, peace, and physiology or medicine are considered
for the award.
The Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences was established in 1968 by the
Sveriges Riksbank, the central bank of Sweden, for contributions to the field of
economics.
The winners of 2013 Nobel prices were announced in October 2013.
Nobel Peace Prize:
The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, the investigation
and enforcement arm for a 1997 treaty banning the use of chemical weapons.
Based in The Hague, Netherlands, the global chemical weapons watchdog
deploys teams worldwide to identify whether all 190 nations that have signed
the treaty are disclosing all chemical weapons stocks and, if possessing them,
destroying both the weapons and their manufacturing sites.
Nobel Prize In Literature:
Canadian author Alice Munro, hailed as a "master of the contemporary short
story."
She produced several story collections chronicling the lives of girls and
women before and after the 1960s social revolution, including "The Moons of
Jupiter," ''The Progress of Love" and "Runaway."
Nobel Prize In Chemistry
Three U.S.-based scientists for developing computer models that can predict
chemical reactions for use in creating new drugs and other tasks.
Their approach combined classical physics and quantum physics.
The winners are Martin Karplus of the University of Strasbourg, France, and
Harvard University; Michael Levitt of the Stanford University School of
Medicine, and Arieh Warshel of the University of Southern California in Los
Angeles.
Nobel Prize In Physics
Peter Higgs of Britain and Francois Englert of Belgium for their 1964 theory,
advanced independently of each other, about how subatomic particles get
their mass.
Their theory made headlines last year when the CERN laboratory in Geneva
confirmed it by discovering the so-called Higgs particle.
Nobel Prize In Medicine
Three U.S.-based researchers for their breakthroughs in understanding how
key substances move within a cell.
They developed better understanding of vesicles, tiny bubbles that deliver
their cargo within a cell to the right place at the right time.
Disturbances in that delivery system can lead to neurological diseases,
diabetes or immunological disorders.
The prize was shared by Americans James E. Rothman of Yale University
and Randy W. Schekman of the University of California at Berkeley; and
German-American Dr. Thomas C. Sudhof of the Stanford University School of
Medicine.
Economics
Three Americans were honoured for developing new methods to study trends
in asset markets, showing that it is difficult to predict whether stock or bond
prices will go up or down in the short term, but over periods of three years or
more it is possible.
The winners are Eugene Fama and Lars Peter Hansen of the University of
Chicago and Robert Shiller of Yale University.
Fama studied the short-term prices, Shiller looked at the predictability in the
long run and Hansen developed a statistical method to test theories of asset
pricing.
Ramon Magsaysay awards 2014
The Ramon Magsaysay Award is an annual award established to perpetuate former
Philippine President Ramon Magsaysay's example of integrity in government,
courageous service to the people, and pragmatic idealism within a democratic
society.
The prize was established in April 1957 by the trustees of the Rockefeller Brothers
Fund based in New York City with the concurrence of the Philippine government.
Ramon Magsaysay Awards for year 2014 was announced on 31 July 2014.
The recipients of Asias equivalent of the Nobel Prize are Hu Shuli (China), Saur
Marlina Manurung (Indonesia), Omara Khan Masoudi (Afghanistan), The Citizens
Foundation (Pakistan), Wang Canfa (China), and Randy Halasan (Philippines).

The 15th International Indian Film Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the

Gulzar awarded Dadasaheb Phalke
Veteran film lyricist, director, screen writer, producer and poet Gulzar was on April
13, 2014 conferred the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the year 2013. He is the 45th
Dada Saheb Phalke Award winner.
The award was conferred for his outstanding contribution to the growth and
development of Indian cinema.
The award consists of a Golden Lotus, a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh and a shawl. The
award is given on recommendations of a committee of eminent persons set up by the
government for this purpose.
Gulzar was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2002, and Padma Bhushan in
2004 . He has won a number of National Film Awards and 20 Filmfare Awards.
At the 81st Oscars in 2009, he won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for
Jai Ho (with A R Rahman), for Slumdog Millionaire.
In 2010, the same song won him a Grammy Award in the category of Best Song
Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media.
