The Winter School on Astroparticle Physics (WAPP) is being organized at the Cosmic Ray
Laboratory of TIFR, Ooty in association with the Bose Institute, Kolkata, during December
21-29, 2014 in Ooty.

Who Should Apply?
Exceptionally bright students in the final year of M.Sc. interested in persuing a research
career in AstroParticle physics, and young research scholars working in this area of research
are encouraged to apply. Students in the final year of B.E./B.Tech. in Electronics and
related areas with an outstanding academic record, having a deep interest in AstroParticle
Physics may also apply. We also invite applications from a few college lecturers to attend
this school to familiarize them with modern techniques of experimental physics.

Objective and scope of WAPP:
The philosophy of WAPP is to expose young minds to the excitement in the field of
experimental high energy astroparticle physics. The WAPP program consists of two
sessions of 4 hours duration every day. The first session in the morning consists of a set of 4
lectures, in advanced areas of astroparticle physics, high energy physics and astronomy. In
the second session in the afternoon the students would have an opportunity to acquire
hands-on experience by working with state-of-the-art equipment. They would be using high
speed electronics, fast photomultiplier tubes, plastic scintillators etc. to make measurements
on the properties of muons, exposing them to the excitement of original research.
The students participating in WAPP would be exposed to the modern concepts in these
areas which should motivate them to take up a career of research in this frontier area.

Research Opportunities:
An interview will be conducted for the outstanding students in the winter school towards the
end of the school for possible selection as Research Scholar at Cosmic Ray Laboratory,
TIFR to persue Ph.D. in Astroparticle Physics. They will be provided with a suitable stipend
during the period of their tenure.
Morning Lecture Session:
During the period 21-29 December 2014 the school would be conducted on 8 days, with 25
December 2014 would be holiday. During these 8 days a total of 32 lectures, each of 50
minutes duration, would be given during the morning sessions covering the following areas;
(1) Physics of
High Energy
Interactions
(2) High
Energy
Astroparticle
Physics
(3) Solar
Physics
(4)
Computational
Methods for
Data Analysis
(5) Charged
Particle
Detection

Afternoon Laboratory Session:
A large number laboratory experiments are being setup wth four broad themes namely; (1)
Operation of scintillators, (2) Signal processing, (3) Measurements using relativistic
radiation, (4) Analysis of the observed data. Each participant would have an opportunity to
take part in one experiment per day for a totol of 8 experiments over the course of the
winter school. Each participant would have an opportunity to work on at least 2
experiments in each of the 4 categories.
