Introduction

movementiscalledsocialmobility.ProfM.NSrinivasandeminentIndiansociologisthave
converselyestablishedthefactthatsocialmobilityistakingplacebothwithinandoutsidethe
frameworkofcaste.Heintroducedanewsociologicaltermssuchassanakritisationand
modernization
Meaning
Thetermreferstoaprocesswherebypeopleoflowercastescollectivelytrytoadoptupper
castepracticesandbeliefstoacquirehigherstatus.Itindicatesaprocessofculturalmobility
thatistakingplaceinthetraditionalsocialsystemofIndia.M.NSrinivasinhisstudyoftheCoorg
inKarnatakafoundthatlowercastesinordertoraisetheirpositioninthecastehierarchy
adoptedsomecustomsandpracticesoftheBrahminsandgaveupsomeoftheirownwhich
wereconsideredtobeimpurebythehighercastes.

2. AccordingDrMajumudar"itiswrongtoassumethattheprocessofSansk:isuniversal
one.ForexampleMohanvillageinUP,lowercastepeopleimitateduppercasteinfood,
dressetc,willnotbecomeacontinuousprocess.Andnoinclinationtoimitatethelife
styleofuppercaste.Itisdifficultunderstandwhentheprocessstops.Ifitsowhy?

culturalchangesinthepastasitneglectsnonSanskrittradition.Sansk:didnothaveany
