TRAINERS GUIDE
FIRE CONTROL:
Choosing and Using Fire Extinguishers
INTRODUGTION
Thank-you and congrarulations for selecting our "Fire Control: Choosing and
Using Fire Extinguishers" training package. Fire causes millons of dollars worth
of damage to business and industry every year in Austrdia, and the majority of
businesses destroyed by fire never reopen. So it is in the interest of every
employee to not only prevent fires but also to be prepared to combat ttrem when
necessary and safe to do so.
This training package has been designed to help prevent loss and damage to
your business from the destrrctive force of fire. fu mentioned in the video, the
best form of fire control is prevention, but accidents will happen and it is in these
situations ttrat your staff must be prepared to aa immediately safely, and with
confidence to control a fire.
Ttris video training package will train your staff by
$ving
them ideas to not only
prevent fires, but details the appropriate steps for them to take in the
unfortunate event of a fire in the workplace. They will learn to select the best
fire extinguisher for the
job
and to use it with confidence.
They will also discover the dangerous consequences of using the wrong
extinguisher.
Written and produced in Australia, "Fire Control" uses easy to understand
language, and dearly spells out the dangers of a fire in the workplace while at
the same time highlighting the need for prompt, safe, effective action on behalf
of your staff.
To assist learning and to enhance the value of discussion, we suggest that all
trainees are encouraged to take concise notes.
It is also important ttrat you understand the trainer's gurde and can conduct ttre
training with confi dence.

Choosing and Using Fine Extinguishens
TBAINING SESSION OUTLINE
PRESENTATION
Your video training session will be more effective if you
take the time to consider ttre following points:
THE SIZE OF YOUR AUDIENCE
If you are using a 25-inch television or monitor you
should limit your audience to no more than 20 people.
This allows everyone an adequate view of the screen and
is a comfortable number for discussions. For larger
groups you should have more monitors or use a video
projection screen if possible.
LAYOUT OF THE HOOM
A semi-circle or "IJ" shape is the most desirable way for
the participants of this training session to be seated, with
the television in the centre and white board and
overhead projector off to one side. It affords everyone an
unimpaired view of the television and will be a
comfortable arrangement for discussion after the video.
Alternatively, have the participants seated around a
conference table which will also provide them with a
firm zurface upon which to write.
Shade the windows and dim the lights to avoid glare on
the screen when playing the video and using the
overhead projections, however keep in mind that the
trainees may wish to take notes.
Place monitors at a comfortable viewing height In most
cases this means ttre bottom of ttre screen should be at
the audience's eye level.
Ttre bottom of the overhead projector screen should be
approximately 1.5 metres off ttre floor,
HEFRESHMENTS
Because of the recommended length of this training
session it may be beneficial to have a break at some
stage for refreshments. Avoid interrupting the video
except for the scheduled pause break, but a break before
or during the discussion period will help to keep the
participants alert and interested. If possible keep the
refreshments out of sight of the group, eittrer in anottrer
room or behind the seating area.
NOTES:
FIBE CONTROL:
Choosing and Using Fine ExEinguishens
TBAINING SESSION OUTLINE
VOLUME
Play the tape before the participants arrive to set the
correct volume level. As a general rule, find a level that
is comfortable and audible from all positions in the
room, then increase it slightly as the level will seem
lower in a room full of people.
INTHODUCING THE SESSION
Decide how best you are going to promote and maintain
interest in each subject. Think of a past experience, a
true story a rhetorical questioq a dramatic action or a
simple statement, which will lead the participants'
interest into *re training session.
PRESENTING THE VIDEO
Make sure you are familiar with the information
contained within ttre video and its format.
DISCUSSION BREAKS
Encourage all trainees to participate during the
discussion breaks as it will be a valuable aid in assessing
the participants' comprehension and will help to danfy
any doubdul points. If *re trainees are not forthcoming
with questions, then asking some yourself may help.
write all poins of the discussion on the white board or
chalk board and have a copy made and sent to
management.
OVEBHEAD PHOJECTIONS
A full-colour overhead projection is included with ttris
package. It is a valuable training aid and will help in
your discussions and to clarify points when correcting
the
Questionnaire
sheets, but can prove to be a
distraction when not used correctly. Take care when
using overheads that you don't talk to ttre screen. TUrn
off the projeaor ttren turn and talk to the group.

TRAINING SESSION OUTLINE
EXEBCISE 1: WORKSHEETA
The purpose of this exercise is to demonstrate to the
participants the importance of being aware of the
different t)?es of firefighting equipment that are in their
workplace, and the importance of knowing exactly
where they are.
The need for preparation is essential to make this
exercise a meaningful one. Prepare a worksheet for eadr
of the participants ttrat has a plan of their usual work
environment wi*r enough clear space to write on. A plan
of the entire premises may not be necessary in Ore case
of a very large building so
just
stick wittr the usual work
areas. Ttris sheet will be referred to as "Worksheet A'.
The participants will be required to mark on Worksheet
A the locations of fire extinguishen from memory. Then
either hand out a second sheet with all the correct
answers or use an overhead projection to allow any
variances to be corected as a group.
If it is not practical or possible to provide a floor plan to
each participant, then simply asking questions such as
'.\lVhere have you seen a fire extinguisher in area D?",
"What colour was it?" etc. should elicit the same
information. However a floor plan is preferable.
GUESTIONNAIFIE: TEST OF OBJECTIVE
This enables you to gauge the participants'
comprehension of the entire session. Remove the
Questionnaire
sheets from this trainers guide and
reproduce enough for each participant. Allow the
pafticipants to retain the "Test of Objective" results to
use later as an accompaniment to their own notes on
"Fire Conuol
-
Choosing and Using Fire Extinguishers".
SUMMABY
At ttre beginning of ttre training session our aim was to
motivate participans by interest. Now you have the task
of maintaining ttrat interest on the
job.
This can only be
done through a good summary that reinforces the
subject content you have
just
covered.
Remember ttrat PLANNING and PREPAR.AtrION are the
key factors to the successful PRESENT/IIION of any
training session.

INTFIODUCING THE SESSION
(allow
5 minutes)
Welcome ttre participans and use yoru interesting story
to introduce the session. Here is an example of what you
could say:
"85o/o of businesses that are destroyed by fire never
reopen. If this place was destroyed by fire it could
possibly mean our
jobs.
That means ttrat eadr of us has a
vested interest in being able to assess the danger and, if
safe to do so, fight a fire that might occur here in our
workplace.
"By the time ttre fire brigade arrive at a fire, it is often
too late for them to save a premises. Ttre best that they
might hope for is to control the fire and prevent it
spreading. This means that if someone could extinguish
the fire before it gets to that stage, they could effectively
save not only the building but also ttreir
job
as well. But
who is this'someone'? Who is this person who should be
responsible for fire prevention and on the alert if a fire
should staft? The answer is you! And that means eadr
and every one ofus here today.
-fhere
are many steps ttrat we can take if and when we
discover a fire that will not only make the fire brigade's
job
a lot easieg but can also save lives.
"Today's training session is all about these practical
steps. These include the first line of defence when
fighting a fire

INTBODUCTION
Introduce ttre video in your own words. To assist you in
doing ttris, here is an example of what you could say:
-Iodaywe
are going to watdr a video on fue control and
in particular the use of fire extinguishers. A simple thing
like being able to use a fire extiaguisher quickly and
efficiently could mean the difference between a small
fire that does little damage and a blazing inferno. An
uncontrolled fire in the workplace is undoubtedly our
enemy and we must fight it by first knowing a little
about it."

PAUSE BREAK
EXEHCISE ONE
The purpose of pausing the video at this point is to
conduct an exercise that will demonstrate to the
participants the importance of being aware of the
different types of firefighting equipment that are ou
hand to combat fire in your own workplace.
Panicipans will also see how we can often fail to notice
the firefighting equipment around us. In the event of a
fire we need to react immediately and with certainry
moving swiftly to ttre firefighting appararus at hand.
Hand out 'Worksheet A' as described in the Preparation
section of this manual. Then inuoduce the exercise; the
following is an example of what you could say:
"During this training session we are going to learn about
HOW to use a fire extinguisher This knowledge will not
be of benefit to us if we are not aware of WHERE this
equipment is located in our workplace."
fuk ttre participants to try and mark on Workheet A the
locations and types of all the firefighting equipment
throughout the areas shown, such as fire exringuishers,
hose reels etc.
(allow
5 minutes to complete)
Hand out a correct sheet or have the trainees correct
their own from an overhead projection.
You may find ttrat many of your staff are unaware of the
presence of firefighting equipment because they becpme
used to seeing it every day. Encourage them to uke more
notice of the fire extinguishers in their own work areas
when they renrrn.
Knowing the location and types of extinguishers that we
have available to us is
just
the first step. Once a fire
starts, we must be ready to combat it with the right
extinguisher and also use it correcdy
Many people are not sure how to use a fire extinguisher
simply because they have never seen one in operation
before. In section two of "Fire Control" we will discover
how to operate the most common forms of fire
extinguishers, the same as those we will find on the
walls of ourworkplace.
