Evening is upon us - there's hardly a better place in Venice for splendid fish

Death in Venice - today, the city of canals has little in common with the
dreamlike setting of Thomas Mann's famous novella. One is more likely
to encounter throngs of tourists who have opted to spend their vacation
circulating through the streets in unhealthy numbers. A short trip to the Grand
Canal can still be a fantastic experience, especially if you can make it to some
of the sights off the beaten path.
The large, lustrous, marble-white Santa Maria della Salute is an ideal
starting point for a tour of discovery. This votive church, built after one of
the era's many plagues, features everything that distinguishes the Baroque
architecture of Venice - and on a vast scale.
On the other hand, as a locale for nightlife, the city of canals only offers so
much. Wanton and sweaty revelry is to be found here and there, though, for
instance at Café Blue or at the Piccolo Mondo. Those who cannot do without
that Ibiza vibe can take a vaporetto (water bus) to the party beaches of the
Lido.
A tip: Taking a vaporetto on the Grand Canal is (especially for those disinclined
to walk) a stunning experience but not an inexpensive one. A single ride costs
6.50 Euros, the flexible water taxi begins its fare at 13 Euros, with every minute
costing 1.8 Euros.

The Piazza San Marco (if it isn't under water again) is at once a glamorous
espresso catwalk, a tourist detention center, and a loo for doves. An elevator
ride up to the bell floor of the famous campanile yields a glorious view of the
city. If you are interested in architecture, you should definitely check out St.
Mark's Basilica. This church, built nearly one thousand years ago, epitomizes
Byzantine architecture, particularly the more than 4,000 square meters of
mosaics - singular décor indeed, and best admired from the gallery.

The colossal Doge's Palace once signaled the considerable political clout
of the city of canals. A tour of the interior is unquestionably a remarkable
experience; those in a hurry should make sure to observe the fanciful
characters and scenes on the lunettes and arches of the facade.

Crowds and bottlenecks always define the Rialto Bridge, yet this
quintessential symbol of Venice - until the 19th century the only pedestrian
bridge on the Grand Canal - is still a feast for the eyes. However, in Do Mori -
Venice's oldest wine bar - you may well encounter a few authentic Venetians.
Order a glass of wine and some tramezzini - tasty sandwiches - and you can't
go wrong.
