SHRI RAMDEVJI TEMPLE AT RAMDEVRA IN RAJASTHAN, INDIA
A wonderful pilgrim centre which symbolises national unity and communal harmony as devotees of all religion come here to pay
homage.
The majestic Shri Ramdev temple at Ramdevra, Runicha, 13 kms from Pokram in Jaisalmer district, houses the shrine of Ramdev.
He is believed to have been incarnated on earth for the benefit of humanity and was born in the houses of Ajmalji in the Tomar Rajput
family.
Since childhood, he performed many miracles and won the hearts of the people. He also performed a miracle before him. He is also
believed to have killed a demon called Bhairav.
Ramdevji chose Ramadevra as the place where he attained a Samadhj and went into a divine state of meditation. Nevertheless many
people claim to have seen him on horse-back.
Legend and History
The old cenotaph was built in the memory of Shri Ramdeoji by descendants but the present cenotaph was built by Maharaja Shri
Ganga Singhji of Bikaner at Shri Ramdevra Runecha. The king was aware of the powers of Baba Ramdevji whom he regarded like a
deity. The tomb of Shri Ramdevji is worshipped here. This tomb or cenotaph is at the centre of the temple campus. The head is
towards north while the feet are towards South. In this temple various tombs of the family members of Shri Ramdevji are also there
while in Hindudharma the dead bodies are cremated, here like the Nath cult, the dead bodies are assigned to dust in a grave and a
tomb is built thereon.
The orginal temple was quite ordinary but the present temple is beautiful, built by the local masons, sculptors and artisans. Various
kinds of lattices, projections and Jharokhas (a projected construction covered by lattices around) have been used here. Excepting the
inner temple, the rest of the temple has been built in the modern style of architecture. Building stone, Makrana marble and lime
morter have been used.
The temple (tomb) is related to the Tanwar Rajputs.
People have a great faith in the temple. Atmosphere is charged with faith and devotion. All the year around devotees and visitors come
to the temple to offer their homage and prayers to seek fulfilment of their wishes.
Entry to the Samadhi (tomb) is allowed without any consideration of caste and creed and religon hence people from all walks of life,
all sects and communities come.
Custom & Traditions of Temple
Devotees offer Sweets, Coconuts, Makhanas, Misri and cloth made horse-image on the tomb. There is a water tank also. A dip in that
is considered to be efficacious for skin diseases. Some followers come from great distances on foot, while some creep on belly to
reach the temple.
Festivals & Fairs in Temple (Main Events)
Two principal fairs are held every year. One fair is on a small scale and is held in January and February while the second fair is on a
large scale which is held in August and September. Lacs of people visit this temple on these occasions. The large fair is held in
Ramdevra attended by lakhs (thousands) of devotees from far and wide. It is held from Bhadon Sudi 2 (Beej) to 11 (Ekadashi) (in the
