Act 1

1. Opening shot introduces the films main characters

at a distance and the transition between the first two shots
suggests that a lot of time has passed whilst they have
been living in this new world. Though the angle of the
camera does not change between the two shots, the
setting and movement of the characters does (in the first
shot they are walking towards the camera and in the
second they are walking away from it) and this hints to the
audience that not very much has happened so far and
establishes equilibrium of some sort as all they have done
is walk.
2. A filter is used to create a dull atmosphere and
connotes that the characters may have lost their purpose
in life now that they appear to be travelling with no
destination in mind. The filter also sets a negative and
hopeless mood to the first act and first connotes the
horror genre to the audience.
3. The proxemics and framing of the characters is
used to convey a little of the story as the audience is left to
assume that the film is set in a world where humanity has
started to die out. The emptiness of the background
supports this as the group are walking along and empty
highway.
4. When the next shot then focusses on the woman
as she says Clear this then creates a doubt among the
audience that the group are not alone. The high angle shot
of the woman slightly to the left of the screen causes the
audience to anticpate something to emerge from the
darkness as their gaze is drawn to the dark space on the
right. This is typical of the horror genre as the audience are
forced to expect something bad to happen to the woman
whilst she is in the darkness.
5. The production companies are then mentioned
before a real plot is determined by the trailer so that the
audience are not yet distracted by the story.
6. This world has existed for over ten years now the
voice over gives a brief explanation without too much
information so that the audience is not overwhelmed. The
fade to black between the shots used during the narration
and the image of them standing around the fire suggests a
shift in time between them searching the house and them
burning a body however the order of the events is left to

the audiences interpretation. The scene of the burning body also evidences what the
character narrating is saying.
7. The long shot of the farmhouse shows the
contrast between the dark paint and the surrounding
landscape. This suggests that there is something wrong
with the house or that it holds future danger for the
group. The shot also sets the scene for the film and the
abandoned and deserted house/land is typical of the
horror genre in general.
8. The words Well salvage what we can from the
house also conveys the groups goals. The voice is
asynchronous to the action happening on screen which
makes it hard for the audience to identify the leader or
main character which the film is centred around. This
differs from most trailers as they would usually establish
the main characters individually.
9. The long take of the hand opening the door
immediately builds tension as the audience are left to
wonder who is entering the new room but also what is
inside the room as the close up limits the audiences
visability of the scene. The contrast of colours bewteen
the white wall and door knob and black glove and door
also draws attention to the hand. The music crescendos
very suddenly which builds the anticipation of
something happening. This is reinforced by the lack of
action throughout the trailer and up until that point the
trailer has been dropping hints that the house is not safe
and that they should leave.
10. The crescendoing music turns into the squeak of
the door opening as the shot changes to the characters
face which momentarily allows the audience to have a
false sense of security.
11. The lack of sound, apart from the slow footsteps
as they descend the stairs, creates an eerie atmosphere.
The unknown squeaking noise in addition to the eyeline
match, of the character in the picture, makes the
audience curious as to what is happening. The single
and focused light of the torch also draws attention to
the dark background, making the setting seem ominous.
The synchronous sound of the man saying Oh my god
also hints that they have discovered something major
and moves the plot along so that the audience do not
become bored with the lack of action.

12. The sound of the metal sliding against metal

makes the audience uncomfortable but also curious as
to what is happening. The dark colouring also makes it
difficult for the audience to see what is going on. The
editing also picks up pace during the action to make it
seem more intense and makes the longer take of the
high angle shot of the man running up the stairs
memorable and more noticable to the audience. This
shot of the man trying to run up the stairs and away
from the action emphasises the idea that the
characters have come across something dangerous.
13. The shot of the window as the door closes
hints that time is running out or that they are too late.
The editing is so quick that the audience becomes
slightly disorientated with the sudden change in
speed.
14. The editing however allows the audience to
only see the characters reaction and are left to
wonder what they are trying to get away from. This is
typical of a trailer as if it were to give away what
happens next then there would be no need for the
audience to go see the film. The quick editing
between the door closing and the man still running
conveys a sense of entrappment but also that time
is running out.
15. The blackout allows the audience to
determine a shift in location. The sound bridge of
the alarm ringing shows that the two girls are still
close to the action however the shot of the woman
with blood on her face suggests that they have come
across obstacles and difficulties of their own.
16. The next sound bridge then explains the
alarm and introduces a new set of characters to the
plot. The words They are coming is used to
introduce the new characters as a point of view
shot sees them approaching the house. The fact
that the new characters lack any names makes
them mysterious but also an ominous threat as not
much is revealed about them. The non-diegetic
music also begin to subtly build under the alarm
and pieces of dialogue used to explain anything that
may confuse the audience or prevent them from
understanding the plot that is being presented.

17. The canted angle of the farmhouse

connotes that all is not well and the fast paced
editing between the different shots of the woman
running and shooting the gun are used to show the
action happening however they give off the
impression that the audience has missed
something.
18. The writing stating This Summer points
out to the audience that the film will be coming out
soon (if the audience were watching this before the
film was actually out). It also signals the second act
in the 3 Part structure and interrupts the action
before. The placing of the text is used so that
audience are left to question what happened or
who the character that got shot was.
Act 2
19. The asynchronous voice of the woman
asking if there were more people as the camera
shows a single figure suggests that the characters
may have been able to overcome some enemies
however their troubles are not over. The shot of the
man also suggests that the characters have not yet
realised how dangerous or cunning their enemy is.
This also suggests to the audience that there is more
to the plot than just people appearing from
nowhere and attacking them and adds more to the
story.
20. The atmosphere of the trailer has changed
as it shows the characters all turning against one
another but the faced paced editing in addition to
the characters voices being laid over one another
hints to the audience that their lives are at stake
now and that the introduction of enemies has put
pressure on the group.
21. The quick flashes between the different
events happening make it disorietating for the
audience and difficult to interpret. The swinging axe
is a slightly longer take so to allow the audience to
see the danger that the characters are facing.
22. The shot of the woman with her face half
in the light
