TOEIC
Preface
Without a doubt, words are the foundation of language. And a firm control of English vocabulary,
particularly synonyms for the words you already know, is essential for getting a high score on the
TOEIC.
Hilkes Complete Vocabulary to Score 900-990 identifies the core vocabulary of 12 subject areas
common to the TOEICfrom business travel to economicsand additionally presents important
general vocabulary you need to boost your score to the 900 level and beyond. Furthermore, Hilkes
Complete Vocabulary to Score 900-990 provides you with the systematic practice you need to
truly acquire these necessary words.
You may already know some of the target words presented here. But there also will be many
sophisticated, high-level vocabulary that you have not yet fully acquired. One of the keys to
successful vocabulary learning is to use words that are already familiar to you as a springboard to
gain full control over words you do not know so well.
The systematic program for each unit in Hilkes Complete Vocabulary to Score 900-990 will help
you to do this. (1) Warming up by identifying the words you already know and those you dont
know, (2) Reading the key sentences and definitions that follow to see the words in context and
to confirm or learn their meanings, (3) Reviewing the new words youve learned by listening to
the key sentences in the downloaded audio files, and (4) Doing four different types of exercises to
help you really confirm and retain the words for each unit.
There is no question about it: The larger your vocabulary is, the better you will perform on the
TOEIC, and the more you will be able to display your true business ability when you use English
to navigate the increasingly diverse, global business environment of the 21st century.
