departurefromthenorm,andknowingWhenthe
timewasright,Sakyamuniinitiatedtheteachingthat
introducedAmitabhaandhispurelandThis
spontaneousteachingbySakyamuniiswbatmakes
thisteachingsospecial.
InthisteachingSakyamunirecountedbowtbe
bodhisattvaDharmakara,afterwitnessingtbe

incrediblylongperiodoftime)studyingalltheBuddha
lands.DharmalKarathenmadefbrty-eightvows,the
fUlfiImentofwhichwouldcreatetheW/esternPure
LandofUltimateBliss.Hedeclaredthathewouldnot
attainBuddhaboodunlesshisvowsfbraperfbctpure
land,whereaIbeingswouldadvancealongthe
Buddhistpatbandneveragainfallbackintosamsara,
wereaccomplisbedOncethesevowswere
accomplished,DbarmakaraBodhisatIabecame
AmitabhaBuddbaHeisnowspeakingtheDharmain
hispurelandandhelpingallWhoaretrulysincerein
theirvowstobereborntbere.
VVitbhelpfromAmitabha,wedonothavetorely
solelyonourselvestoattainenlightenmentaswe
wouldwitbothermetbods.InPureLandBuddbism,
werelyonthecompassionateBuddhasand
