Making Measurements Using Gravity Lab

Objective: The main Objective of Making Measurements Using Gravity was to measure the time
distance between the second floor of the clock tower and the 1st floor using different objects.

A few rules:

Only one person from each group will be allowed in the clock tower at any given time
(thus, you cant have one person on each balcony at the same time)
I will only allow you to drop safe objects
No objects that bounce
No objects that will damage the cement blow
No objects that will break
You cant use a measuring tape to measure the height

A few considerations:
1)
2) If you drop something on Earth, it is not in free fall. Why not? How can you best avoid the
3) From where are you measuring? To where?

Procedure:
In this lab, you will write your own procedure. How are you going to measure the distance?
What materials will you use? Be clear and concise, yet specific and detailed. I should be able
to reconstruct your experiment based on your written procedure, but should not have to
read through 100 steps to do so.
Outline of Method 1:
The First method which I brought up while walking to the clock tower was measuring the number of
ceramics between the first and the second floor. But before all of this we measured one ceramic each
one was 1 Meter but we decided to measure two block for accuracy which was 2 meters so then we
measured the number of block between the first and second floor which was 10 blocks then divided by
two
Outline of Method 2:

Page2
The second method was one of us going up to the second balcony and throwing a shoe from there and
one of our team mates would calculate the time it took from the second balcony to the floor using a
timer and the we would calculate using the acceleration (9.8) then calculate the distance

Wooden stick
Ruler

IPhone 5

Procedure: 1
1. Bring a 1 meter stick ruler.
2. Measure 1 ceramic
3. Your Measure should be equal to 0.50 meter
4. Count the number of ceramics between the first and second floor
5. Your answer should be equal to 10 ceramics.
6. 10 Ceramics which is equal to 5 meters.

Procedure: 2

One person should go up to the clock tower

The second floor
Throw one of your shoes from the second balcony
Let one of your team mates measure the time it takes to touch the ground
Then the use the acceleration formula and calculate remember acceleration is 9.8

Data Tables:
Record and present your data in a clear and neat way. Remember, data is anything that you collect
anything that you calculate from the data (besides averages and precision ranges which merely
describe the data that you have) will have to go in the Results section.

Avg=1.412s

Results for Method 1:

Each 2 blocks is 1 m there =10 block between the first and second balcony so its going = 10 divided by 2
which would equal to 5m

Results for Method 2:

Avg=1.412s
1.4125sx9.8m/s2=13.8425m
Conclusion:
1. Maybe we miss through the shoe.
2. Maybe we didnt start the timer at the proper time
3. Maybe we through it from the 1st balcony
In my opinion the most accurate Result would be the 1st method the measuring the blocks because we
are in the 21st century blocks are cut with special machines so each block should be equal to the other
