Volunteers create

By MIKE MONOSTRA

Sandwiched
between
two
sports complexes at the corner of
Church and Hartford roads in
Medford is a large, undisturbed
wooded area.
The area may not look like
much from the road, but for a
group of local residents, it is the
perfect place to enjoy the beauty
and serenity of the outdoors.
A group of volunteers has
begun construction of a trail system known as the Hartford Crossing Trails. Once completed, the
system will provide local residents with a place to walk, hike
and ride bikes.
Larry Macdonald, owner of the
Wheelies bike shop in Medford,
came across Hartford Crossing a
few years ago.
I was riding my bike through
there one day and thought this

ShopRite of Medford
to stop selling cigarettes
ShopRite of Medford will stop
selling cigarettes and electronic
cigarettes as of Jan. 1.
The announcement comes on
the heels of a wellness program
at ShopRite that stresses a team
approach of dietitians and pharmacists.
Counseling sessions and resources are offered to help customers and employees make the
decision to quit smoking or help
them with behavioral modifications needed to be successful with

quitting.
With smoking being the No. 1
cause of preventable death and
disease in our country, it is important for us to focus on the health
and well-being of our customers
and employees, said Renee Zallie, who with her husband David
owns the store.
We are happy to join other retailers in becoming part of the
public health solution helping
the next generation to become tobacco-free.

Seneca became the first students

in the Lenape Regional High
School District to hop on the pathway to engineering this year.
Next year, students at Shawnee
and Cherokee will be able to join
them.
The board of education approved a grant from Lockheed
Martin for $31,200 at last weeks
meeting that will allow the district to expand its Pathways to
Engineering pilot program to all
four high schools.
With this grant, we'll finally
get to expand (the program) to
Shawnee and Cherokee next
year, Superintendent Carol Birnbohm said. This is the second
consecutive year that Lockheed
Martin is helping us with a
grant.
Last year, Lockheed Martin donated an identical $31,200 grant to
help get Pathways to Engineering

off the ground at Lenape and

Seneca.
This partnership opportunity
provided by Lockheed Martin has
enabled us to add a rigorous
STEM program to our course offerings, said director of curriculum and instruction Heather Xenakis. Its a fantastic opportunity for all of our districts highly
motivated students interested in
engineering to understand, in application, the content learned in
science and math courses.
The Pathways to Engineering
program comes from Project
Lead the Way, a nonprofit company providing STEM-related classes and activities to schools
around the country.

This holiday season, support local businesses

Dan McDonough Jr.

is the season, as they say. Tis

the season to be jolly. Tis the
season to bundle up and drink
hot chocolate. Tis the season to spend
extra time with loved ones. Tis the
season to start your holiday shopping if you havent already. And tis
the season to shop local.
This week marks the official start to
the holiday shopping season, but if
youve been out and about this month,
you have noticed holiday decorations
and specials at stores throughout our
area.
Much of the attention of the holiday
shopping season falls on two days
Black Friday and, now, Cyber Monday but dont forget to shop local for
your holiday gifts.
Keeping your spending dollars in
your hometown, or at least in the region, has immense benefits on the

local economy.
Even companies as large as American Express are touting the importance of shopping local. The company
started the now well-known Small
Business Saturday the Saturday
after Thanksgiving, the day after
Black Friday in 2010 to promote
small businesses. Last year, a study reported an estimated $5.7 billion was
spent at small businesses on that day!
A vibrant and successful local business community has a trickle-down effect on our own pockets. Just think:

Successful local businesses make

other businesses want to locate in our
town.
More businesses equals more ratables, which, in turn, lowers our taxes.
The more ratables we have, and the
lower our taxes are, the more attractive our community becomes to future
residents.
It all starts with you. If you have a
choice between buying a gift at a big
box store or a local mom-and-pop, support your neighbors by making that
purchase locally.
Our small businesses are already
fighting an uphill battle against the
marketing dollars of the big box
stores.
Lets all help them out by opening
their doors and opening our wallets to
them. We can make it a truly happy
holiday season.

Quarantine not the answer
for those exposed to Ebola
In 1942, at the age of 7, a doctor diagnosed me with Scarlet Fever. The previous
evening, seeing that I had a fever of 104,
was vomiting and had a bright red rash,
my younger sister and my two aunts took
shelter with other relatives. The next
morning, within an hour of my being diagnosed, the Board of Health nailed a footlong quarantined sign to the front of my
grandmothers house. My mother and
grandmother stayed with me. A doctor and
a nurse from the Board of Health paid
daily visits for more than three weeks.
When the sign was finally removed, I was
taken outside, my hair was cut off, my hair
and bedding were burned along with all of
my clothes and toys. To this day, these

memories are vivid. Being quarantined is

not something you ever forget.
In your newspaper, Bruno Di Stefano
claims that our president is playing Russian Roulette by refusing to quarantine
people who are not ill. My younger sister
and my aunts were not quarantined when I
had Scarlet Fever! I was in quarantine because I was contagious. Scarlet Fever is
caused by a Streptococcus bacteria and has
an incubation period as early as two days
and for as long as symptoms remain. It is
spread by droplets exhaled by an infected
person and inhaled by someone else. It is
spread in the air, but only I was quarantined. Ebola is not spread in the air and appears to have an incubation period of more
than a week and up to three weeks.
Mr. DiStefano goes on to suggest that the
Enterovirus did not originate in the United
States. This is not clear. That virus was

first discovered in 1962 in California. It is a

non-polio enterovirus, identified as EV68
and has three strains. In 1987, this virus
began to expand. It is spread in the air and
spreads through sneezing and coughing.
Shall we quarantine all the children and
their parents and teachers in all the
schools where children have contracted
this virus?
President Obama wanted a proven administrator to coordinate activities required in the battle against Ebola. Since
numerous states and countries are acting
independently, coordination is difficult but
necessary. The head of the NIH has been
required to keep the public informed because lazy, misinformed, partisan members of Congress failed to confirm the surgeon general our president recommended.

so they will be able to succeed in
future courses.
Theyre using the engineering
design process, which is similar
to the scientific process, Condurso said. Theyll be keeping an engineering notebook.
The students are also participating in their first engineering

would be the perfect place for
trails, Macdonald said.
Matthew Keane, the chairman
of the townships Environmental
Affairs Advisory Committee, and
Macdonald have been planning
the trails for more than two years.
The first work on the trails began
on Nov. 9.
That was the first kickoff
cleanup, Keane said. We had
some individuals out there laying
out the trails. We had a little over
20 people come out.
Macdonald said he would like
residents to have a wooded area
for hiking and biking since there
are very few in the area.
Ive always been looking for
places to ride around here, Macdonald said. There are a few, but
a lot of them are restricted to private property.
The Hartford trails project is
something Keane is also passionate about. Keane had previous experience with laying out trails in
areas of the Pine Barrens.
We used to lay out courses,
and as part of laying that out, we
had to mark some of the trails,
Keane said.

Keane has mapped out a trail

system to wind through the Hartford Crossing area in between the
two Medford Youth Athletic Association sports complexes. He got
some help from deer trails running through the woods. There is
also a path through the area connecting the Church Road sports
complex to the Hartford Road
complex.
You could see deer trails and
thats how cutout trails start,
Macdonald said. Matt had more
experiences with the woods. He
was able to lay out a nice intertwining trail system.
So far, the group has completed
three-quarters of the northern
section. Once the section is completed, work will begin on the

southern section. Once completed, the trails will be available for

use to any members of the public.
Our main impetus is mountain biking, Keane said. Any
type of low impact use would be
welcome there. If its gas powered, its not for this area.
The group is working with the
township, residents, businesses
and churches to get the project
done. Any area residents are invited to join cleanup sessions. Future cleanups will be posted on
the groups Facebook page, Hartford Crossing Trails Medford
NJ.
In addition to manpower, Macdonald said they are looking for
residents who can donate equipment such as debris cutters as

A Natural Path to Restoring and Maintaining Optimum Health

letterS to the editor

LETTERS
Continued from page 6
In the time of national crisis, that
the head of the NIH had to perform the duties of the surgeon
general is a national disgrace!
It may be beside the point, but I
owe my life to the NIH because
when I was told I had cancer, I did
research that suggested the form
of my cancer had been misdiagnosed and required radiation, not
chemotherapy. I sent my biopsy to
the NIH. It confirmed my research, the lab had misdiagnosed
my cancers form.
To the point, the man who refused to confirm a surgeon general, causing Americas national
disgrace, was rewarded by our
electorate. He will now control
the United States Senate and have
even greater power. This has
shaken my belief in our system of
government. The first republic in
ancient Greece fell due to a misinformed electorate. The second Republic in Rome fell because the
electorate accepted their leaders
decision to make himself an emperor. His military might made
the average citizen feel superior
and they liked that feeling. I fear
the current electorate in the United States has just paved the path
to the fall of the third republic,
the United States of America.
Our founding fathers understood
the history of failed republics
and tried to ensure that we would
not fail. I no longer have faith in
our system. Our founding fathers
could not have foreseen an electorate that would reward a Congress that did not care to govern
and viewed hatred of a good and
decent president as their national
goal. Psychiatrist Nora Volkow
suggests that people become obsessed about their hatred, and
the hatred, like a drug, becomes
addictive and physically alters
the rational part of the human
brain.
Joyce Harris Mayer

Writer: President right

to document immigrants
Although I strongly disagree
with the process the president
has chosen, I'm very supportive of

the principle of legalizing roughly 5.5 million undocumented

workers and to significantly increase the number of visas for
professionals, the so-called H-1B
visas.
We can't ignore the millions of
people who are here without formal documentation. They are an
integral part of our economy,
some have been here for decades,
and without them, tens of thousands of small businesses would
cease to exist, from landscaping
companies, to produce growers,
restaurants, hotels and building
contractors. The list is endless.
Undocumented workers support hundreds of thousands of
higher paying jobs.
To those who argue, These
people broke the law, how can we
reward lawlessness? I say lets get
over it and move on.
The argument that increasing
the number of H-1B visas will
take jobs away from fellow Americans is totally unfounded, and
used only for political purposes.
People who come here on a H1B visas are the nation's biggest
job creators.
Behind 40 percent of all tech
start-ups is an immigrant. Almost half of our 500 largest companies are run by an immigrant

or by the children of immigrants.

Some people seem to forget that
we are a nation of immigrants,
and that our greatest asset is the
steady flow of people, who come
here to work. They bring skills,
innovation and energy to the
workplace.
What I, however, find highly
objectionable, is the process President Obama has chosen to legalize these immigrants, by executive action.
Whereas he has spent months
and years trying to reach consensus with Iran on nuclear proliferation, he has spent very little effort trying to orchestrate an
agreement with the opposition
and with members of his own
party on immigration.
That's what a leader is supposed to do!
There are plenty of Republicans who are in favor of granting
some kind of legal status to immigrants.
To President George Bush's
credit, he, together with Ted
Kennedy and John McCain, made
a serious attempt to introduce immigration reform, which unfortunately was blocked by narrow political interests on both sides of
the aisle.
