Student insight
April, USA
I knew I wanted to be in London,
but I was clueless as to where.
Goldsmiths ended up being the
perfect location. New Cross has
a beat of its own. With university
activities and events in the local
area, plenty of things go down in
New Cross to keep you entertained.
It is far enough to escape the bustle
of central London, but close enough
to be a part of it when you want to.

London
is a fantastic city,
with so much to do,
to see, with easy access
to any part of the UK.
My favourite city
in the world.

Student insight
Sibi, India
I chose Goldsmiths for the potential it held
in widening my knowledge base, especially
in media and media theory related ideas,
which I hoped would help enhance my career
prospects in journalism.

London has a long-standing Indian

community, with many organisations
promoting Indian culture and lifestyle.
It is the largest ethnic minority in London,
with a population of around 500,000.

and Bollywood films have made an impact

on the British entertainment industry. The
Bollywood influence was acknowledged in
the West End with Andrew Lloyd Webbers
production of the Indian themed musical,
Bombay Dreams several years ago.
The Indian community adds a unique and
important dimension to the cultural vibrancy
of London, organising events, live music,
films, dance shows, art exhibitions, craft
displays, Bollywood festivals, and other
celebrations throughout the year. Bollywood
movies have become an integral part of the
London film scene and can be viewed in a
number of cinemas around the capital.
London boasts one of the finest Indian
restaurants in the country and there are also
many food shops and specialist supermarkets
catering for any need and budget. Brick Lane
in East London has the largest concentration
of Asian restaurants, but popular choices
can be found all across London.
London caters for members of nearly all
Asian faiths, and celebrates all of the major
religious festivals, including Diwali, Eid and
Vaisakhi. It is home to the largest Hindu
temple outside India, the stunning Shri
Swaminarayan Mandir, located in Neasden,
north-west London; the largest Sikh temple
outside of India, the Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh
Sabha in Southall, west London and the
largest mosque in western Europe, The Baitul
Futuh Mosque in Morden, south London.

Indian people have made their mark on

many aspects of London life, participating
in all levels of politics, business and cultural
initiatives. In recent times Indian culture

Student insight
Adil, India
To be in London is a dream
come true for me. Being from
a nondescript village in West
Bengal in India, a Masters degree
from the University of London is
the best thing that can happen
to me. I have been a Right To
Information (RTI) activist in
India and was always interested in
issues pertaining to development
and rights.
My internship with Manthan
Yuva Sansthan, an NGO working
in the Maoist affected areas of
Jharkhand (India) where I worked
on the implementation of the
revolutionary Right to Education
Act and Forest Rights Act made
me question the discourse
on development.
I wanted to critically review
the present economic growth
of India vis--vis the idea of
inclusive development.
