An Italian sailor, Christopher Columbus wanted to sail west to get to India
and China. This was a completely new idea because in those days not many
people believed that the world was round.
In August 1492, Columbus sailed into the Atlantic Ocean. The voyage was

go back, but Columbus asked them to continue the voyage.
