New Applications
1. Go to ICP's Certification Programs and review the qualification requirements for your chosen program.
2. Log in to the ICP Application Portal.
3. On the ACCOUNT Tab, select Create New Application.
4. Be prepared to upload pertinent documentation, such as educational diplomas or wire transfer payment information.
5. The processing of your application may take up to six weeks, so for the best selection of exam dates and locations, do not
delay in submitting your application.
6. If you do qualify, but your application is incomplete, you will receive a deficiency email specifying the information needed to
proceed. Please be advised that you must resolve any deficiencies in order to receive your certification, even if you pass the
exam
7. If you qualify and your application is complete, you will receive an Exam Authorization email with a unique Exam Eligibility ID
number. The notification will have instructions on how to schedule your exam with Prometric.

Exam Information for API 510,570,653:


1. Questions are derived from the publications listed in the Publications Effectivity Sheet.
2. Please refer to the Body of Knowledge for the specific topics included in this examination.
3. There are 150 questions on the exam, of which only 125 are scored. The remaining 25 are pretest questions. Learn more

4. The exam day is 8.5 hours long, and includes 3 hours for the closed-book section, 4 hours for the open-book section, a halfhour tutorial session, and a 1-hour lunch break. View the Tutorial before exam day.

5. The exam will be administered via computer at a Prometric computer testing center.
6. The examination consists of two parts.

The closed book section tests the candidate on knowledge and tasks requiring everyday working knowledge of API
Standard and other applicable reference documents.

The open book portion of the examination requires the use of more detailed information that the inspector is expected to
be able to find in the documents, but would not normally commit to memory.

Open book for computer-based testing refers to PDF files of pertinent codes and standards that will be available on
your monitor and presented in English. The PDF documents will have tabs differentiating the sections and chapters.
These reference materials will only have those sections listed in the Effectivity sheets. Sections not listed in the
Effectivity sheets will not be available for candidates during their exam.

7. Papers and books are not allowed in Prometrics computer testing centers. All materials needed for the open-book portion of
the exam will be displayed on your computer screen in English.

Exam Information for API 936,571,577,580:

There are a total of 70 questions, all multiple-choice and closed-book.

3.

The exam is 4 hours long and will be administered via computer at a Prometric computer testing center.

This examination has a set passing point of 70%, or 49 correctly answered questions.

5.

Papers and books are not allowed in Prometrics computer testing centers.

Examination Policies & Notifications:


1. API gives each candidate 12 consecutive months to pass an exam. This 12-month period begins with the first scheduled
exam date.
2. If a candidate does not pass the examination on the first attempt, the exam may be rescheduled within the allowable 12month period. Reschedule fees apply.
3. If the candidate is unsuccessful within the allotted 12 months, a new application must be submitted along with a new
application fee.
4. Examination scores and results are sent by Prometric to each applicant via e-mail approximately eight (8) weeks after the
exam.
5. If a candidate passes the exam and has no deficiencies in their application, they will be certified.
6. A hard-copy certificate and wallet card will be mailed out approximately 2-4 weeks after the results have been received.
7. The term of certification is 3 years.
