WhenAutofocusFails(Switching
to ManualFocus)1,.,1',1;,r1,:1
The camera has a high-precisionAF system which can focus almost all
subjects. However,it can fail to achievefocus (the in-focusindicatorblinks)
with the subjectslistedbelow.
Difficult Subjects for Autofocusing
(a) Low-contrastsubjects.
Example:Blue sky, solid colors on a flat surface, etc.
(b) Extremelybacklit or reflectivesubjects.
Example:Automobilewith a highly reflectivefinish.
(c) Overlappingnear and far objects.
Example:Animal behind bars in a cage.
In such cases, focus an object at the same distanceas the subjectand lock
the focus before recomposing.(See page 39) Or focus manuallyby
followingthe procedurebelow.
ManualFocusing
Set the lens focus mode switch to
MF (or M on older lenses).
'
MeteringModes
The camera has three meteringmodes: Evaluative, partial, and
centerweightedaveragingmetering.Evaluativemeteringis the standard
meteringmode. Partialmeteringis set automaticallywhen AE lock is used
(see page 51), and centerweightedaveragingmeteringis set automatically
in the <M> mode (see page 48).
Evaluative metering
This is suited for most picture-taking
situationsincludingbacklitconditions.
The subject'spositionand brightness,
the background,the existinglight,
backlightconditions,and the active
focusing points are taken into account
to obtaina suitableexposure.
Partial metering
The exposure setting is based on the
brightnessof an area 9.5% of the
viewfinderscreen at the center. lt is
effectivefor backlit subjects.
. The partialmeteringarea (shaded)is
approximatedby the diagramon the

ln the One-Shot AF and Al Focus AF modes (except Al Servo AF) (see page

halfway to focus.

hood will partiallyobstruct the flash coverage.
. lf any of the following lenses attached to the camera, the flash coverage of
the built-in flash might be obstructed.Use an external EOS-dedicated

Super telephotolenses such as the EF 300mmt/2.8L USM and EF 600mm

With shorter lenses, the peripheryof the photograph will look dark.

Theaperture
the size of the apertureopening in the

the lens attachedto the camera.

Depth of field
This is the range where acceptablefocus can be achieved in front of and
behindthe point of optimumfocus. The smallerthe aperture(the largerthe
f-number),the deeper the depth of field. And the larger the aperture (the
smallerthe f-number),the shallowerthe depth of field.
The depth of field is affected as described below:
(1) A smalleraperture(a largerf-number)increasesthe depth of field.
... For example,f/8 obtains a greater depth of field than t14.5.
(2) A lens with a shorter focal length increasesthe depth of field.
... A wide-anglelens obtainsa deeper depth of field than a telephotolens
at the same shootingdistance.
(3) A longer distance between the camera and subject increasesthe depth
of field.
(4) Generally, the depth of field behind the point of optimum focus is longer
than the depth of field in front of the point of optimum focus.
