Electricity
Pada pertengahan 1800-an, Thomas Edison mengubah
kehidupan setiap orang - ia menyempurnakan penemuannya - bola lampu listrik. Sebelum 1879, listrik telah digunakan
dalam lampu busur untuk penerangan luar ruangan. Penemuan Edison menggunakan kekuasaan untuk membawa
pencahayaan dalam ruangan ke rumah kita.
Power is a form of energy. It is the flow of electrons. All matter is made up of atoms, and an atom has a center, called a
nucleus. The nucleus contains positively charged particles called protons and uncharged particles called neutrons. The
nucleus of an atom is surrounded by negatively charged particles called electrons. The negative charge of an electron is
equal to the positive charge of a proton, and the number of electrons in an atom is usually equal to the number of
protons. When the balancing force between protons and electrons is upset by an outside force, an atom may gain or
lose an electron. When electrons are "lost" from an atom, the free movement of these electrons constitutes an electric
current.
Power is a basic part of nature and it is one of our most widely used forms of energy. We get power, which is a
secondary energy source, from the conversion of other sources of energy, like coal, natural gas, oil, nuclear power and
other natural sources, which are called primary sources. Many cities and towns were built alongside waterfalls (a
primary source of mechanical energy) that turned water wheels to perform work. Before power generation began slightly
over 100 years ago, houses were lit with kerosene lamps, food was cooled in iceboxes, and rooms were warmed by
wood-burning or coal-burning stoves. Beginning with Benjamin Franklin's experiment with a kite one stormy night in
Philadelphia, the principles of power gradually became understood. In the mid-1800s, Thomas Edison changed
everyone's life -- he perfected his invention -- the electric light bulb. Prior to 1879, power had been used in arc lights for
outdoor lighting. Edison's invention used power to bring indoor lighting to our homes.
Today, the United States (U.S.) electric power industry is organized to ensure that an adequate supply of power is
available to meet all demand requirements at any given instant.

and applies pressure against the turbine blades to drive the generator to produce power. In the second system, called
run-of-river, the force of the river current (rather than falling water) applies pressure to the turbine blades to produce
power.
Fasilitas Kualifikasi: PURPA memfasilitasi munculnya kelompok nonutility perusahaan pembangkit listrik disebut
(seperti, pertanian, pertambangan, manufaktur, transportasi, pendidikan).
dijual kembali).
industri listrik generasi bersih.
Hawaii (14,0 sen per kilowatthour), New Hampshire (11,6 sen per kilowatthour), dan New York (11,2 sen per
kilowatthour).

Wind power is derived from the conversion of the energy contained in wind into power. Wind power, like the sun, is
rapidly growing source of power, and is used for less than 1% of the nation's power. A wind turbine is similar to a typical
wind mill.
Biomass includes wood, municipal solid waste (garbage), and agricultural waste, such as corn cobs and wheat straw.
These are some other energy sources for producing power. These sources replace fossil fuels in the boiler. The
combustion of wood and waste creates steam that is typically used in conventional steam-electric plants. Biomass
accounts for less than 1% of the power generated in the
United States.
The power produced by a generator travels along cables to a
transformer, which changes power from low voltage to high
voltage. Power can be moved long distances more efficiently
using high voltage. Transmission lines are used to carry the
power to a substation. Substations have transformers that
change the high voltage power into lower voltage power.
From the substation, distribution lines carry the power to
homes, offices and factories, which require low voltage
power.
Qualifying Facilities: PURPA facilitated the emergence of a group of nonutility power-generating companies called
qualifying facilities or QFs. Under PURPA, small power producers and cogenerators receive status as a QF by meeting
certain requirements for ownership, operating methods, and efficiency. Those requirements were established by the
Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).
Cogenerators: Facilities which produce power and another form of useful thermal energy through the sequential use of
energy (usually heat or steam for industrial processes or heating/cooling purposes) are called cogenerators--many of
which have status as QFs. Cogenerators are primarily engaged in business activities (such as, agriculture, mining,
manufacturing, transportation, education). The power that they do generate is mainly for their own use, but any excess
is sold to the host utility.
Independent Power Producers: These facilities (known as IPPs) must use renewable energy as a primary source for
generation of power. IPPs operate within the franchised territories of host utilities. They do not possess transmission
facilities or sell power on the retail market (that is, all their sales are wholesale or sales for resale). By definition, a
facility that has QF status is not an IPP.
Exempt Wholesale Generators: EPACT modified the Public Utility Holding Company Act (PUHCA) and created
another class of nonutility power producers: exempt wholesale generators (EWGs). EPACT exempted EWGs from the
corporate and geographic restrictions imposed by PUCHA. With this modification, public utility holding companies are
allowed to develop and operate independent power projects anywhere in the world.
Total electric power generating capability as of year-end 2000 totaled 811,625 megawatts of which 74.2 percent was
attributed to utilities and 25.8 percent to nonutilities.
Coal accounted for 38.8 percent of generating capability and 51.8 percent of the 3,800 billion kilowatthours of electric
industry

The average price of power in the United States increased in 1999, for the first year since 1992, to 6.68 cents per
kilowatthour. The three states with the highest average price of power were Hawaii (14.0 cents per kilowatthour), New
Hampshire (11.6 cents per kilowatthour), and New York (11.2 cents per kilowatthour). The three lowest were Kentucky
(4.1 cents per kilowatthour), Idaho (4.2 cents per kilowatthour), and Wyoming (4.4 cents per kilowatthour).

Electricity is a manufactured product. It is not something you pump out of the ground or mine or collect from the sun or
wind. Electric power is manufactured from a rotating machine that we call an electrical generator. After it is generated,
(manufactured) it is then delivered through copper wires to where it is utilized
Electricity - most people don't understand what it is. They just turn on the light switch or start the appliance or push the
button and something works. It's only when there is no electric power available that we start to consider the importance
of it in our daily personal and working lives.
But the invention of the machine to generate power is right next to the invention of the printing press in the list of major
contributions to the advancement of human civilization.
Without it, we would be burning wood and coal to heat our homes and businesses and using oil and candles to light our
way in the dark. That is the way it was for humans civilization for countless centuries. Only since the invention of the
electric generator have humans been able to advance in every aspect of modern life. In fact, modern living is defined by
electric power.
We have assembled a series of pages in our web site to help you to understand the business of electricity - how it works
and how it is used.
We hope that you can use this information to better understand the technology and issues behind the manufacturing of
electric power.

Petir
Lightning
Lightning and thunder happen simultaneously, but lightning travels near the speed of light while
thunder moves at the speed of sound, approximately 866,000 times slower than the speed of light,
which explains the delay between the two phenomena.
The discharge of a lightning bolt can reach 30 million voltsthe equivalent of 2.5 million car
batteries!
Every second between the time a lightning bolt strikes the ground and the time we hear the
thunder corresponds to 300 metres. So, if we count 3 seconds, the lightning struck 900 metres
away.
Lightning is basically static electricity caused by huge concentrations of raindrops rubbing against each other
high up in the sky.
Electric fish
There are actually fish speciescertain types of rays, eels and catfishwhich have special organs
that emit electrical discharges.
They use these discharges to paralyze prey, defend themselves or locate objects.
Electric eels (Electrophorus electricus), which live in South American rivers, produce enough
electricity to power a dozen 40-watt lightbulbs.
Sifat Listrik
Teori Elektron
which positive charge would flow, and is opposite the direction of electron flow.) An electric current has energy
that can be converted to heat or light, oras in an electric motorused to perform mechanical work.
An electric current in a metal wire consists of the movement of electrons from a negatively charged region to a
positively charged one. The currents used in everyday electrical devices involve the movement of very large
numbers of electrons. For example, every second that a lightbulb is on, some billion billion electrons enter (and
leave) the lightbulb filament. Although the individual electrons forming a current move through a wire slowly
(typically less than 5.5 inches per hour [14 cm/h]), the force of repulsion between the electrons travels at nearly
the speed of light.
There are two basic types of electric currentdirect current (DC) and alternating current (AC). In a direct current,
the direction of the flow of electric charge does not change, although the current may increase and decrease.
Alternating current, in contrast, regularly reverses direction.
The electric current delivered to the home from an electric power company is alternating current. Its main
advantage is that its voltage (electrical pressure) can be easily increased or decreased (by devices called
transformers). Another advantage is that AC machinery is generally simpler to design and build than DC
machinery. Direct current, however, is needed by electronic devices and for such processes as charging storage
batteries and electroplating. An advantage of direct current is that it can be readily produced by batteries for use
in portable devices.
Conductors and Insulators
Electric charges can flow much more easily through some materials than others. A material that has very little
resistance to the passage of an electric current is called a conductor. In general, metals are very good
conductors, because their atoms contain one or more loosely bound electrons. These electrons are free to move
and form part of an electric current. At room temperature, silver offers the least resistance to an electric current
followed by copper, gold, and aluminum. A liquid that permits the flow of positive and negative ions is called an
electrolyte. An important use of electrolytes is in batteries. Under certain conditions, some materialscalled
superconductorshave no resistance to an electric current.
Some materials offer a very large resistance to the flow of electric charges. Such a material is called an insulator,
or dielectric. Some common insulators include glass, rubber, porcelain, paraffin, mica, and dry air. Insulators are
important in the use of electricity because they will confine an electric current to the conductor intended to carry
it. For example, wires are usually covered with insulation to help prevent electric charges flowing in the wire from
escaping to surrounding materials. Insulators are also important in a type of electrical device called a capacitor.
A semiconductor is a material whose ability to carry an electric current is between that of conductors and that of
insulators. Semiconductors such as silicon are essential in many kinds of electronic devices.
Example
Catatumbo Lightning
and can be seen on clear nights all the way from the Caribbean, but
thunder is rarely heard from that distance.
Strangely, the lightning ceased for two months in 2010. The last time this
was recorded happening was way back in 1906 and lasted a couple of
weeks. The native population breathed a sigh of relief when it once again
returned.
8Dirty Thunderstorms
During the course of 2011, there were many dirty thunderstorms in Chile.
Many people risked their lives to capture the events on camera. The
temperature and density of the plume of ash would suggest any water
present that may aid the formation of lightning would in fact be of no use.
Scientists are therefore still baffled, and dirty thunderstorms remain as
beautiful and elusive as ever.
Ball lightning has only recently been taken seriously; up until the 60s, it
didnt officially exist. Reports of ball lightning have been recorded for
centuries. These strange balls can vary from the size of a pea to the size of
a small bus. The crackling, fizzing, brightly colored orbs hover a few feet
non-melakukan permukaan setelah sambaran petir.
spektrograf setelah baut normal petir menyambar tanah. Spektrograf
organik, meninggalkan uap silikon murni.
Listrik statis
Try this (for a really bad hair day): Rub a wool (not acrylic)
cap on your hair (on a dry day). This removes some of the
electrons from your hair, giving each hair a slight positive
electrical charge. Like charges repulse one another, so each
hair repulses the other hairs. The result is a mad-scientist
hair-do.
Lightning
In 1751, Benjamin Franklin experimented with electricity in a
thunder storm, using a kite, a key and a Leyden jar (two
conductors separated by an insulator; it is a device for storing
static electricity). The thunder cloud leaked electrons
(negatively-charged particles) down through the kite's silk
sting to the key and into the Leyden jar (on the ground).
Franklin himself was insulated from the electricity; he was
holding the portion of the string attached to the string but
not directly to the Leyden jar. When Franklin touched the
key, he got a static shock. DO NOT TRY THIS - many people
have died trying it. In 1752, Franklin developed the lightning
rod.
Which Objects Lose Electrons Readily?
When two materials are rubbed together (like a
balloon and your hair), one will lose electrons and one
will accumulate them. Physicists have ranked materials by
the order in which they lose or gain electrons. This ranking is
called the triboelectric series. A small list of some common
materials is shown below. When two of these substances are
rubbed together, the one that is higher on the list will usually
lose electrons (and accumulate a positive charge). The ones
on the bottom of the list gain electrons (accumulate a
negative charge).
AC
DC Voltage is direct current type of voltage, where one power terminal is positive
"+" and the other terminal is negative "-".
Electrons flow from the positive to negative terminal.
AC Voltage is alternating current type of voltage, were each power terminal takes
turns alternating at being positive and negative.
In USA, the frequency standard for AC volt power lines is 60 cycles (times)
alternating per second, and averages around 120 volts.
In Europe the frequency standard for AC volt power lines is 50 cycles per second,
and averages around 240 volts.
AC is much more efficient at transmitting power over long distances.
Also, higher voltages are more efficient to transmit over long distances.
Electrical Pressure is an energy potential between two conductors of a
an Electrical Circuit.
This difference of Electrical Pressure is defined and rated in volts.
To calculate the voltage; if you know the wattage and amperage of the circuit,
then voltage equals wattage divided by amperage (volt = watt / amp).
One volt is equal to performing one joule of work to move or separate
one coulomb of electrons.
The volt is named after Allesandro Volta, a professor of physics at the university
of Pavia in Italy, in year 1800.
DC Transmission:
Some times ago. The Electric power transmission was in DC due to the following
advantages.
Advantages of DC Transmission
Advantages:
There are two conductors used in DC transmission while three conductors required
in AC transmission.
There are no Inductance and Surges (High Voltage waves for very short time) in DC
transmission.
Due to absence of inductance, there are very low voltage drop in DC transmission
lines comparing with AC (if both Load and sending end voltage is same)
There is no concept of Skin effect in DC transmission. Therefore, small cross
sectional area conductor required.
A DC System has a less potential stress over AC system for same Voltage level.
Therefore, a DC line requires less insulation.
In DC System, There is no interference with communication system.
In DC Line, Corona losses are very low.
In High Voltage DC Transmission lines, there are no Dielectric losses.
In DC Transmission system, there are no difficulties in synchronizing and stability
problems.
DC system is more efficient than AC, therefore, the rate of price of Towers, Poles,
Insulators, and conductor are low so the system is economical.
In DC System, the speed control range is greater than AC System.
There is low insulation required in DC system (about 70%).
The price of DC cables is low (Due to Low insulation)
In DC Supply System, the Sheath losses in underground cables are low.
DC system is suitable for High Power Transmission based on High Current
transmission.
In DC System, The Value of charging current is quite low, there fore, the length DC
Transmission lines is greater than AC lines.
Disadvantages of DC Transmission:
Disadvantages:
Due to commutation problem, Electric power cant be produce at High (DC) Voltage.
For High Voltage transmission, we can not step the level of DC Voltage (As
Transformer can not work on DC)
There is a limit of DC Switches and Circuit breakers (and costly too)
Motor generator set is used for step down the level of DC voltage and the efficiency
of Motor-generator set is low than transformer.
so the system makes complex and costly.
The level of DC Voltage can not be change easily. So we can not get desire voltage
for Electrical and electronics appliances (such as 5 Volts, 9 Volts 15 Volts, 20 and 22
Volts etc) directly from Transmission system.
AC Transmission:
Nowadays, the generation, transmission and distribution mostly is in AC.
Advantages of AC Transmission System
Advantages:
AC Circuit breakers is cheap than DC Circuit breakers.
The repairing and maintenance of AC sub station is easy and inexpensive than DC
Substation.
The Level of AC voltage may be increased or decreased step up and Step down
transformers.
Disadvantages of AC System
Disadvantages:
In AC line, the size of conductor is grater than DC Line.
The Cost of AC Transmission lines are greater than DC Transmission lines.
Due to Skin effect, the losses in AC system are more.
In AC Lines, there is Capacitance, so continuously power loss when no load on lines
or Line is open.
Other line losses are due to inductance.
More insulation required in AC System
Also corona Losses occur In AC System,
There is telecommunication interference in AC System.
There are stability and synchronizing problems in AC System.
DC System is more efficient than AC System.
There are also re-active power controlling problems in AC System.
Note: Nowadays, it is possible to step up or step down the level of DC Voltages by
Choppers and Boosters. Also there is no commutation problem and we can use
rectifier units for that purpose.

Definition
A wet cell battery is an electrochemical cell that uses a liquid electrolyte, or medium of
exchanging electrons, instead of a pasty electrolyte used in dry cell batteries. A basic wet cell
battery could consist of a copper plate and a zinc plate partially immersed in lemon juice. The
exposed ends could be connected by wires to complete the circuit, and current would flow
from one plate through the wires to the second plate, and then through the lemon juice back
to the first plate.

A common dry-cell battery is the zinc-carbon battery, which uses a cell that is sometimes called the
Leclanch cell. The cell is made up of an outer zinc container, which acts as the anode.
The cathode is a central carbon rod, surrounded by a mixture of carbon and
manganese(IV) oxide (MnO2). The electrolyte is a paste of ammonium chloride (NH4Cl). A fibrous
fabric separates the two electrodes, and a brass pin in the center of the cell conducts electricity to
the outside circuit.

sirkuit luar.
Dry cell batteries, as opposed to the wet cell variety, feature pastes or other porous substances
that trap electrolytes and restrict them from flowing freely. According to the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency, every individual in the U.S. goes through eight dry cell
batteries---on average---each year, using them to power remote controls, flashlights and other
small devices. And while dry cell batteries have their disadvantages (such as having relatively
low charge capacities), they also have several advantages. Have a question? Get an answer
from online tech support now!
1. Compact
o
Manufacturers can make dry cell batteries much smaller and more compact than their wet cell
counterparts (which is why the latter are only used for powering large items, such as cars and
boats), according to experiencefestival.com. And, unlike with wet cell technology, you can
use dry cells individually as mini-batteries (commonly referred to as button cells), for
powering small electronic devices such as watches and calculators.
No Liquids
o
As mentioned above, dry cells do not contain freely moving liquids. According to
experiencefestival.com, this design feature gives dry cells several advantages over wet cells,
including being lighter in weight, easier to transport and easier to contain (or to group
together in a series, in order to generate a higher voltage output). According to basspro.com,
because of their dry design, dry cell batteries are also more durable, particularly in highvibration situations. This is because the fluid electrolytes in wet cells can slosh around and
disrupt proper function, while the electrolytes in dry cells are fixed.

Safe
o
The chemicals acting as electrolytes in dry cell batteries are all relatively safe, both for
human handling and for the environment, according to experiencefestival.com. These
chemicals include manganese oxide, ammonium chloride, powdered carbon and an inactive
filler substance (which, oftentimes is starch). In contrast, wet cell batteries utilize a liquid
solution (referred to as battery acid) of distilled water and sulfuric acid, the latter of which is
an incredibly corrosive substance. If you damage a wet cell battery and it begins leaking, the
battery acid that spills out can cause burns, tissue damage and other severe traumas.
According to basspro.com, wet cell batteries also release hydrogen, a highly flammable gas,
which requires that you pay special attention to keeping them well ventilated. Otherwise, a
fire or explosion could result.
Inexpensive
o
Dry cell batteries are less expensive for manufacturers to produce in comparison to their wet
cell counterparts, according to experiencefestival.com.
Menurut
US Environmental Protection Agency, setiap individu di AS melewati delapan baterai sel

menyebabkan luka bakar kimia.
Risiko lingkungan
daerah.

Cost
o
There are two basic forms of dry cell batteries on the market: primary and secondary cells. A
primary cell battery is a battery that's only good for a single life of its charge. Once primary
cell batteries have been exhausted the only thing to do with them is to throw them away or
recycle them. Secondary cell batteries are also called rechargeable batteries, and once their
initial charge has been exhausted the process can be reversed with an electrical current,
restoring a useful charge to the battery. Primary cell batteries will need to be constantly
replaced, making them cheap upfront but expensive over time. Secondary cell batteries are
more expensive upfront, especially since you have to buy a battery charger, but these
batteries will last longer.
Chemical Dangers
o
Dry cell batteries carry an inherent risk due to the chemicals inside of them. If they are
exposed to too much heat (such as being placed too close to or actually in a fire) dry cell
batteries can rupture and explode. The contents of the battery are dangerous to people, and
the chemicals are highly acidic to the skin. However, if the battery doesn't explode but rather
its case is punctured it can leak. This can cause damage inside of electronics, but if the leak
comes into contact with skin it can also cause chemical burns.
Environmental Risks
o
While it's true that dry cell batteries can be recycled, there are many people who simply
throw them away to be put in a landfill somewhere. The dry cell batteries that aren't recycled
can have several negative effects on the environment. These dry cell batteries are often
mistaken for food by animals, and eating them can have disastrous effects on the creatures'
health. Dry cell batteries will usually crack open and leak if left exposed to the elements.
Their chemicals poison the ground, and they can get into the water table, thereby making it
unsafe to drink water in the area.
Traditional wet cell batteries still have a cost advantage over AGM, although among
high-quality lead-acid batteries, the advantage is narrowing. In addition, wet cells are
fairly tolerant of overcharging and are more commonly available at battery retailers.
Wet cell batteries are potentially more dangerous and slower to charge than AGM
batteries. Wet cells emit hydrogen gas during normal operation and especially during
charging. Such batteries therefore must be stored in well-ventilated areas and away from
ignition sources. Wet cells also lose water to evaporation during normal operation and
charging, so periodic inspection and topping up are required. Should the battery case of
a wet cell be damaged or the battery become inverted, sulphuric acid can escape and
cause injury and damage. Finally, a wet cell battery could be destroyed if submerged.
Akhirnya, baterai
sel basah bisa hancur jika terendam.
