I focused on being the best I could be,

not better than others, but the best I could
be. That meant having to dig a little deeper
when I was tired, being able to throw 130 or
140 pitches, being
a warrior.

Pitched for the Mariners from 1989-1998, compiling a 130-74

(.637) record with a 3.42 ERA (782 R, 698 ER) in 10 seasons.
Is the Mariners all-time leader in shutouts (19) and strikeouts
(2,162), and ranks 2nd in wins (130), starts (266) and
complete games (51).
Threw the first no-hitter in Mariners history on June 2, 1990
against the Detroit Tigers.
10-Time All-Star, including the starting pitcher in 1995 (AL),
1997 (AL), 2000 (NL), 2001 (NL).
5-Time Cy Young Award Winner, including 1995 with the
Mariners2nd-most Cy Young awards by a player in MLB
history, trailing only Roger Clemens (7)one of only
two pitchers to have ever won the Cy Young award in four
consecutive seasons (1999-2002)
Won his 300th career game June 4, 2009 against the
Washington Nationals. Became just the 18th pitcher during
the modern era (since 1901) to win 300 games.
Ranks 2nd all-time with 4,875 career strikeouts (behind
Nolan Ryan), including a Mariners single-season record of
308 in 1993 and a Mariners career record of 2,162.
During a 10-year stretch from 1993-2002, went 175-58 with
a 2.73 ERA, 2,928 strikeouts, 71 complete games, and 29
shutouts in 306 games/297 starts.
Pitched in the post-season 8 times, including 1995 and
1997 with Seattle. Went 7-9 with a 3.50 ERA in the postseason, including 3-0 in the 2001 World Series with the
Diamondbacks.
Recorded 4 of the top 10 single-season strikeout totals in
Major League history (since 1900), including 372 in 2001
with Arizona (4th-most in MLB history).
Tied Nolan Ryan for most 300-strikeout seasons in a career
with 6.
Recorded at least one win in 43 different Major League
ballparks.
Named co-MVP of the 2001 World Series with Arizona, going

I miss game day quite

a bit. I miss the preparation
that I would put into leading
up to the game that I would
pitch, whether it was
working out in the weight
room, sitting down with my
catcher and going over a
game plan, adjusting that
game plan throughout the
course of the game that I was
actually pitching, just that
whole day. I miss that.

I look at those things now and I really just kind of

smile. I am able to reflect more now that my career is
over, and open up about more of those kinds of things.
Back then, I think when I started having success I
didnt want to start talking about my success because
I didnt want to get too far ahead of myself. I just
wanted to stay focused on the task at hand.
